  1. >Sunset refrained from pulling any heinous stunts against Rarity after the cinema event.
  2. >It wasn't easy to convince her either.
  3. >And despite your better judgment, you stayed friends with Rarity, even setting time aside to spend together in the interest of friendship.
  4. >Sunset didn't entirely approve of the arrangement, but you assured her you'd be keeping the fashionista at arm's length.
  5. >That part wasn't always easy, though the risk of losing Sunset had a way of keeping you faithful.
  6. >It was also a good way to slowly mix into Sunset's circle of friends without forcing yourself to get to know them.
  7. >It was another day at school...
  8.
  9. >"Anon, make Sunset apologize!"
  10. >"You think he can make me do anything?"
  11. >"He tamed you didn't he?"
  12. >"Excuse me?"
  13.
  14. "Please don't drag me into this."
  15. >Rainbow Dash gets in your face and points at Sunset.
  16. >"Then tell your girlfriend here to apologize to Fluttershy."
  17. >"He's not going to order me to do a thing."
  18. >"Anon!"
  19. >You feel like a turtle fleeing into its shell for protection.
  20. >The entire upset has attracted the attention of passing students, who are beginning to amass around you.
  21. >You don't even know what Subset did this time.
  22.
  23. "Just say you're sorry, babe."
  24. >"You're taking her side?"
  25. >"Duh. Anon has to know I'm right."
  26.
  27. "I'm not, and I didn't say that. I just want this to be over so we can go home."
  28. >"Take yourself home then, I'm not leaving until Dash lets it go."
  29. >"As if I'd do that." Rainbow snorts.
  30.
  31. "Is there any way we can solve this I dunno, now?"
  32. >So much for taking Sunset to dinner early.
  33. >"Not until she apologizes." Rainbow dash growls.
  34. >You groan and shoot your girlfriend a pleading look.
  35. >"Anon, why aren't you on my side?" She asks.
  36.
  37. "Because I just want to get a bite to eat with you and an apology is the easiest way to do that."
  38. >"Forget it, Anon."
  39. >Sigh.
  40. >Then Rainbow perks up with a smug grin.
  41. >"Alright, how about this: a challenge. If I win, you say you're sorry and if you win, you and Anon can go and do your thing. Fair?"
  42. >Sunset looks skeptical, "Let's hear your game first."
  43. >"A two-on-two game of soccer. First to score a goal wins."
  44. >Oh crap.
  45. >"You honestly think I'll agree to that?"
  46. >"Scared to lose?"
  47. >Sunset huffs, then turns to you.
  48. >"Anon, are you good at soccer?"
  49.
  50. "I was good when I was a kid."
  51. >"So are you good or not?"
  52.
  53. "I don't know, it's been years."
  54. >"Ugh, fine. Anon will be my partner then."
  55. >Rainbow folds her arms, nods at Applejack and smiles, "Good. Then it's AJ and me against you and Anon. Meet us outside."
  56. >"Anon, swear you'll do good." Sunset says.
  57.
  58. "I'll do my best. No promises though."
  59. >"Good enough. I don't want Rainbow to think she'll just walk all over us."
  60.
  61. "She won't."
  62. >"She'd better not."
  63. >Your girlfriend then takes you by the hand and leads you outside to the field.
  64.
  65. >A surprising amount of your classmates attended the showdown.
  66. >Judging by the words you could make out amongst the chatter, it didn't seem as though anyone had faith in your abilities.
  67. >You didn't either.
  68. >The two pairs stood opposite each other at the ball.
  69. >Both Applejack and Rainbow Dash had advantages over you: Strength and speed.
  70. >Meanwhile, your teammate boasted no particular skill.
  71. >So Sunset had you go toe to toe with Dash while she covered you.
  72. >Lucky for you, it wasn't long before you shook off the dust on your talents.
  73. >Dash was still quick on her feet, but you managed to stay on the ball.
  74. >You even took a few shots in hopes of scoring.
  75. >Applejack was a fortress goalie for the most part though.
  76. >The match was a losing game from beginning to end.
  77. >Sunset couldn't do a thing, and that left you to take a chance on striking when there was no defense if you fumbled the ball.
  78. >Your legs weary, throat dry, heart pounding, and face sweating, you were giving your all.
  79. >But Rainbow was too good for you.
  80. >She's captain of most of Canterlot High's sports teams.
  81. >You never stood a chance.
  82. >Every shot rejected left you scrambling back to your goal for defense.
  83. >Then the girls pressed harder, focusing completely on breaking you.
  84. >Sunset managed to come through a couple times.
  85. >It was never enough to give you the edge for more than a second.
  86. >But then the stars aligned somewhere in the afternoon sky.
  87. >Dash made a mistake when she accidentally kicked the ball backwards without realizing Applejack wasn't there to take it.
  88. >You seize the opportunity and rush past the Captain, claiming the ball for yourself.
  89. >And Sunset, you suppose.
  90. >This got personal, however.
  91. >The goal was undefended and in your sights.
  92. >The price of the enemy's hubris spikes as your leg rears back.
  93. >It was time to end the game.
  94.
  95. >Caught up in the moment, you act without thinking.
  96. >You kick the ball with all the might you could muster and it goes sailing through the air.
  97. >You prepare the victory dance when suddenly, a dull clang rings out and the crowd gasps.
  98. >The ball slammed against the top of the goalpost, and ricocheted right back over your head and to the center-field.
  99. >Where Rainbow Dash was waiting just past Sunset.
  100. >And a nice firm kick into your goal from Dash ended the game.
  101.
  102. "SON OF A B- ARRGH!"
  103. >Your fall to your knees in exhaustion and slam a fist into the grass.
  104. >The game was almost yours.
  105.
  106. "I was so close! SO CLOSE!"
  107. >Rainbow Dash jogs up next to you, similarly out of breath.
  108. >"Hey... Don't sweat it Anon, that was... Good. You were just... On the wrong team."
  109.
  110. "Yeah... thanks. Where's Sunset?"
  111. >You ask after a sharp intake of air.
  112. >"I'm right here." She says, sitting next to you and placing a hand on your shoulder.
  113. >She didn't even sound tired.
  114. >You look up at her and see that she's smiling warmly at you.
  115.
  116. "This was your fault, you know."
  117. >"Yeah, I know."
  118.
  119. "Ffff- aw jeez, I'm tired."
  120. >She gives you a soft kiss and stands up to face Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and Fluttershy who just walked over.
  121. >"You guys put up a good fight, but you lost. A deal's a deal." You hear Rainbow say.
  122. >You summon the strength to pick yourself up and stand next to Sunset.
  123. >Forget dinner, you're going to take a nap when you get home.
  124. >The crowd murmurs expectantly.
  125. >"Fine."
  126. >Sunset takes a deep breath and looks away from the girls.
  127. >"I'm sorry for pushing you down, Fluttershy."
  128. >"It's okay, Sunset."
  129. >Your jaw nearly drops.
  130.
  131. "THAT'S why I was running my ass off for the past hour? Because Fluttershy got knocked down? What is she, five?"
  132. >"There's more to it than that Ano-" You ignore Dash and dust the dirt off of your clothing.
  133.
  134. "No. Forget it. I'm done. I am so done. Enjoy your stupid victory."
  135. >You catch a couple boos as you shove your way past the girls and trudge straight over to your car.
  136.
  137. >Really?
  138. >You're Fluttershy's friend too and all, but Jesus.
  139. >Was it excessive?
  140. >Though your mind says yes, it didn't matter.
  141. >There was no turning back and facing that crowd after your display of anger.
  142. >Rainbow tried to explain her side of the issue.
  143. >You didn't bother to listen.
  144. >You'll care when you cool off.
  145. >Sunset offered to walk home, but you insisted on driving her as you usually do.
  146. >She told you the story of what happened on the way.
  147. >The bustling hallway had your girlfriend shoved into Fluttershy, who dropped her binder and spilled it's contents.
  148. >Sunset didn't bother with excusing herself; she instead stuffed the offender into a locker and stepped on Fluttershy's stuff when she walked away.
  149. >She didn't technically do wrong, she just didn't care about Flutters' feelings or possessions.
  150. >Dash watched the whole scene unfold without realizing Sunset was pushed, and took action.
  151. >Then you got involved.
  152. >She admired the fact that you put forth the effort you did into protecting her dignity.
  153. >That's how she saw it anyway.
  154. >Apologies still weren't easy to give.
  155. >Then she invited you inside her house.
  156. >Her parents weren't there, not that it mattered.
  157.
  158. >You won't be playing soccer for a while.
  159. >Or even hanging with Dash and friends.
  160. >You don't want to do anything other than what you're currently doing:
  161. >Laying with Sunset Shimmer on her bed, holding her close.
  162. >Enjoying her warmth, her presence, and that wonderful strawberry scent you've come to love.
  163. >You got the girl... and the best sleep you've ever had.
