  1. English Weirdshot Notes
  2.
  3. * Note: Some people have absurdly good controllers that somehow can use the downleft notch to get working weirdshots on the first explosion frame on first frame rolls (unbuffered; for some reason buffering seems to prevent the crash), however it seems that most people do not have such controllers (and that is what I will assume in the frame data below).
  4.
  5. Some Basics:
  6.
  7. (I'll say hookshot throughout this, but obviously I could be talking about other first-person items)
  8.
  9. When doing weirdshots, you have 2 frames to roll:
  10. - The first roll frame is the last blue frame on the bomb before the 7th red flash
  11. - The second roll frame is the first red frame of the 7th red flash
  12. (these are the frame you'd pause buffer to before inputting A to roll)
  13.
  14. When you do a first-frame roll, the first frame that you have a chance to pull hookshot is the first explosion frame of the bomb.
  15. When you do a second-frame roll, the first frame that you have a chance to pull hookshot is the second explosion frame of the bomb.
  16.
  17. When I say "1st-frame weirdshot" I mean the weirdshot you get with holding target for 1 frame after the hookshot input. Analogously for "2nd-frame weirdshot", etc.
  18.
  19. -----
  20.
  21. Review of Downleft Weirdshots and why they can be problematic:
  22.
  23. For a downleft weirdshot, hold roughly between downleft and straight down (but NOT straight down) on the control stick during your roll.
  24.
  25. Frame Data Summary for Downleft Weirdshots:
  26.
  27. Roll Frame 1:
  28. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 1: ----- CRASH
  29. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 2: 1st-frame weirdshot works, 2nd-frame weirdshot works, 3rd-frame weirdshot crashes
  30. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 3: 1st-frame weirdshot works, 2nd-frame weirdshot works, 3rd-frame weirdshot crashes
  31.
  32. Roll Frame 2:
  33. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 2: 1st-frame weirdshot works, 2nd-frame weirdshot works, 3rd-frame weirdshot crashes
  34. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 3: 1st-frame weirdshot works, 2nd-frame weirdshot works, 3rd-frame weirdshot crashes
  35.
  36. Pulling hookshot on the 4th explosion frame is practically useless in both cases, but you can crash on by holding target for too long (looks like 3rd-frame weirdshot crashes).
  37.
  38. * The reason downleft weirdshots can be problematic when doing unbuffered weirdshots is because accidentally pulling hookshot on the first explosion frame of the first roll frame crashes (if doing the weirdshot unbuffered with most controllers), as noted above. Although consistently avoiding pulling hookshot on this frame is doable with practice, a potentially less-risky alternative exists: Straight Down Weirdshots.
  39.
  40. * Note: 2nd-frame weirdshots crash on 1st explosion frame hookshot pulls (assuming you can do the hookshot pull without crashing)
  41.
  42. -----
  43.
  44. Straight Down Weirdshots:
  45.
  46. For a straight down weirdshot, hold straight down on the control stick during your roll.
  47.
  48. Frame Data Summary for Straight Down Weirdshots:
  49.
  50. Roll Frame 1:
  51. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 1: ----- No working weirdshot, but also NO CRASH!
  52. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 2: 1st-frame weirdshot works, 2nd-frame weirdshot works, 3rd-frame weirdshot crashes
  53. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 3: 1st-frame weirdshot works, 2nd-frame weirdshot works, 3rd-frame weirdshot crashes
  54.
  55. Roll Frame 2:
  56. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 2: ----- No working weirdshot, but also does NOT crash
  57. Pull Hook on Explosion Frame 3: 1st-frame weirdshot works, 2nd-frame weirdshot works, 3rd-frame weirdshot crashes
  58.
  59. Pulling hookshot on the 4th explosion frame is practically useless in both cases, but you can crash on by holding target for too long (2nd-frame weirdshots crash).
  60.
  61. * The advantage of Straight Down Weirdshots is that you cannot crash the game by pulling hookshot on the wrong frame, you can only crash the game by holding target for too long. This makes unbuffered weirdshots much less risky. However, this added safety comes with a tradeoff as Straight Down Weirdshots have 1 fewer working frame to pull hookshot on second frame rolls. It is also worth noting that if you pull hookshot on the 4th explosion frame, then 2nd-frame weirdshots crash (and 1st-frame weirdshots are not particularly useful weirdshots).
  62.
  63.
  64. Summary:
  65.
  66. Straight Down Weirdshots cannot crash on hookshot pull (assuming you don't have inverted camera or something), but they have 1 fewer working frame on 2nd-frame rolls compared to Downleft Weirdshots. No crashes on hookshot pulls makes Straight Down Weirdshots arguably safer to use when doing unbuffered weirdshots (though Downleft Weirdshots are also arguably better to use for the additional working frame if you're good at avoiding pulling hookshot on the first explosion frame). If you do a buffered weirdshot, then Downleft Weirdshots are almost objectively better to use because of the extra working frame to pull hookshot on 2nd-frame rolls and because buffering prevents the crash from pulling hookshot on the first explosion frame.
