How to trend a hashtag

What does it mean to "trend" on Twitter?

Twitter measures trending on based on how many times a #hashtag is tweeted within a period of time. The more people tweet, the better the chances of trending. However, according to Twitter algorithms, the hashtag needs to be part of an original tweet; Retweeting a tweet does not count towards trending. The original tweet needs to be literally copy and pasted into a new tweet if it is to contribute to trending.
