  1. >What other offical Touhou Media is out there?
  2. There's manga, books, CDs, an ongoing short story collection and an ongoing magazine. Most of these are complimentary to the main games, meaning that they're not necessary to read/consume in order to play and understand the main storylines of each game. Some (like SSiB, WaHH and FS) are lore heavy and have ties to particular games. Artbooks are focused on character-specific background information and world building. The CDs offer a perspective of Gensokyo and the world of fantasy through outsider human eyes. The ongoing collection of short stories (CoLA) tell stories about certain events or after effects of games and the magazine (SCoOW) focuses on ZUN's creative process and thoughts.

  4. >Where can I find this stuff?
  5. Links will be provided in each section (Touhou wiki has downloads for every manga/printwork on their pages). If you wish to buy physical copies then please follow Touhou Wiki's purchasing guide. The only official piece of non-game Touhou media that has released in English is Forbidden Scrollery

  8. >Manga
  9. There are 9 official Touhou manga as of 2019. 8 have been completed, leaving only one ongoing story left.
  10. Touhou Sangetsusei - The only manga with multiple series in the franchise. There are currently 4 series, with 3 having been completed. The manga is a SoL that revolves around Three Fairies of Light, a group of three prankster fairies who find themselves in wacky hijinx every chapter. There are rarely any serious plot points in the series and it only loosely connects to the games every so often. If you like flying onaholes then you'll love this manga series.

  23. Silent Sinner in Blue (complete) - Part of the Touhou Bougetsushou series. The first "serious" Touhou manga. The manga follows the story of Reimu, Marisa, Sakuya and Remilia as they head towards the moon on a whim while Yukari and Yuyuko plot in the background. Introduces Reisen (moon) and the Watatsukis. Probably the best and most cohesive manga story-wise. If you're only gonna read one Touhou manga then this is the one to go with.

  26. Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth (complete) - Part of the Touhou Bougetsushou series. A semi-canon compilation of 4komas. It's all comedy and has no bearing on the series whatsoever. Really only for fans of the Eientei crew, specifically Tewi and Reisen. Cute art though.

  29. Wild and Horned Hermit (complete) - A manga following the life of the totally-not-oni Kasen Ibaraki and the characters around her. This story is the most connected with the games but still not so much as to be required reading.
  30. Online: https://mangadex.org/title/2307/touhou-ibara-kasen-wild-and-horned-hermit
  31. Download: https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Wild_and_Horned_Hermit
  32. Forbidden Scrollery (complete) - A SoL manga focusing on the human village Kosuzu Mootori, an aficionado of magic books who has the ability to decipher any text. Things don't get plot-heavy until the end and even then the ending itself is controversial among fans. All Mamizou fans should read this, she's basically the second main character. Oh and this manga argugably has the best art out of them all (so far).

  36. >Books
  37. The official books function as supplementary materials to the games, unlike the manga which are complimentary. A sizable amount of character information, world building and plot points are contained in these books. As such, it's recommended that any fan eventually get to reading these. (note: the Touhou Wiki pages have the most accurate translations)
  38. Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red - The first official Touhou book. Contains interviews that Aya conducts around Gensokyo as well as ZUN's comments on his music and some non-canon fan comics. Extra of the Wind is the only canon comic in the book.
  39. Online:
  40. Download:
  41. Seasonal Dream Vision - A collection of non-canon fan comics and stories. At the end of the book is a canon story written by ZUN, A Beautiful Flower Blooming Violet Every Sixty Years.
  42. Online:
  43. Download:
  44. Perfect Memento in Strict Sense - A book containing articles on characters, species and places in Gensokyo. Essential in developing the world around the games.
  45. Online:
  46. Download:
  47. The Grimoire of Marisa - A book written from the perspective of Marisa Kirisame. Throughout the book, she writes about and reviews the spell cards of other characters to see if she herself would like to use (steal) them.
  48. Online:
  49. Download:
  50. Symposium of Post-mysticism - A parody of Plato's Symposium written in the same style. Deals with religion and other hot topics in Gensokyo through the presentation of a debate between Kanako Yasaka, Byakuren Hijiri and Toyosatomimi no Miko. Perhaps the most important book in terms of content, right up there with PMiSS
  51. Online:
  52. Download:
  53. Alternative Facts in Eastern Utopia - A book in the style of a tabloid newspaper written from the PoV of Aya Shameimaru and the other tengu. Articles on characters and events in Gensokyo are found throughout the work.
  54. Online:
  55. Download:
  56. The Grimoire of Usami - A spirtual sequel to GoM, but from the perspective of Sumireko Usami and several other characters. Gensokyo has a danmaku fireworks contest and a panel of judges with familiar faces rate each spell card. A short manga story detailing the plot of the book is included.

  60. >Other Print Works
  61. Fairy of the Moon - A short story attached to the end of Eastern and Little Nature Deity. It's a quaint read and doesn't really have much impact on the story at all. For fairy fans only.
  62. Online:
  63. Curiosities of Lotus Asia - A ongoing series of short stories told from the PoV of half-youkai shopkeep Rinnosuke Morichika. Usually just tells self contained incidents and the after effects of a game plot through Rinnosuke's lenses. Good for people who want even more world building
  64. Online:
  65. Cage in Lunatic Runagate - A companion story to Silent Sinner in Blue and Imperishable Night. Really, it just combines the stories of the two into one but from different perspectives with a wealth of more added information.
  66. Online:
  67. Strange Creators of Outer World - A ongoing magazine focused on Touhou. Segments on games, characters, interviews with ZUN and fan comics are present in its pages. CoLA is currently being serialized in here.

  70. >Okay wait what order do I read this shit in?
  71. The Touhou Wiki has a Gensokyo timeline which puts most of the print works (and games) in chronological order:
  72. https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Gensokyo_Timeline
  73. Really, you can read most of the manga in any order you'd like expect for SSiB and CiLR. Those should be read after directly IN. The books are also best enjoyed if you know the characters from the games beforehand. BAiJR, SDV and PMiSS should be read after EoSD, PCB, IaMP, IN and PoFV. GoM should be read after MoF. SoPM should be read after TD. AFiEU should be read after LoLK and GoU should be read after VD. CoLA should be read according to Touhou Wiki's timeline for the best experience. Issues of SCoOW should be read after you finish all the games, as it's mostly just recap and development insight from ZUN.
  74.
  75. >Official CDs
  76. Over the course of Touhou's lifetime, numerous official CDs have been released. These CDs include those compiling the soundtracks of the PC-98 series and the fighting games, the Hifuu Club CDs that contain original music and rearranges from the mainline series and CDs that have accompanied past print works that also contain original tracks and remixed music from the games.
  77. Akyuu's Untouched Score - A set of five CDs that cover the entire PC-98 soundtrack (expect for HRtP's "Shrine of the Wind") plus unused tracks. Contrary to the title of the CDs, the FM score is actually retouched. AUS does not present the original sound version of the PC-98 tracks. Most agree that the retouched versions are better, however.
  78. Download:
  79. ZUN's Music Collection - 10 CDs (so far) of original music by ZUN and rearranged tracks from the mainline series. Each CD, with the exception of cDolls in Pseudo Paradise" and "Unknown Flower, Mesmerizing Journey", contains a story follwing the university students Renko Usami and Maribel Hearn during the near future. Their interest in the occult and Maribel's otherwordly ability to see boundaries lead them to discuss a great deal about the nature reality and fantasy.
  80. Download:
  81. Fighting Game OSTs - Every fighting game so far has had an original soundtrack CD released. These OST CDs also contain special arrangements not found in-game.
  82. Download:
  83. Print Work CDs - Some print works had special CDs included with their releases. Most of the music are ZUN's arranges of the mainline games' music but there are some original ZUN tracks as well. The majority of the music from the Strange Creator of Outer World CDs are fan arranges from different doujin circles.
