Compiling ports as root is bad practice?

Hello,

I recently signed up for digital ocean and I'm having a blast.  I made a FreeBSD droplet and now I have a question for Alan.

Would you say that compiling ports as root is bad practice?  In general I've heard nothing but "compiling as root is bad".

Also, what do you think of portmaster for managing ports?  Is that a safe solution?
