All of the sudden he'd pull back on the remaining distance needed, apparently not being able to handle the suspense any longer. ** Masha pumps the gas pedal a few times before turning the starter. The starter whines for a steady ten seconds before the engine coughs; white smoke billows out from under the car and the engine slowly winds up to idle RPM. Nasty cold start.
