45. <after>William and Kate Darling were simple people who were quite content with the idea of living and dying in the same place. In the early 1980s, they had secured jobs at a family friend’s farm as they saved up money. Kate worked as the household cook and nanny to the farmer’s children, while William exercised his lifelong experience to manage the stables. But the 80s were a turbulent time in South Africa, and it was a couple years after the birth of their first (and only natural) child that reality crashed through their pastoral lives: Kate’s sister and her boyfriend, a black pastor, were murdered by a gang of apartheid supporters.

46.
 47. Instead of staying and tempting fate, the couple relocated to the English countryside, taking Peter with them. They had enough money to rent a modest carriage house on another farmer’s land, and so Peter grew up roaming around property reminiscent of Wuthering Heights. His parents worked the land, and when he was old enough he helped them, conscious always of the status differences between his family and the family who owned the farm. Certainly, the Darlings were not poor; but their hosts were adamant on acknowledging their classes, and it was impossible for Peter to miss his constantly darned clothes, or the hand-me-downs he received from the owner’s older son.

48.
 49. Still, the Darlings stayed in the Briarcliffs’ good graces, so much so that Mr. Briarcliff left the business to William after he died. All too soon, Peter saw his life mapped out, and the bonds of it started to tighten around him. He knew that university wasn’t a possibility for him, and he also knew that farming wasn’t a possibility for him. Throughout the years, he had learned to play the trumpet and violin, the former through school and latter through one of the farm hands, but he wasn’t sure whether music was a serious option. Conscious that he had obligations, both as a son and as a foster brother to the three children his parents had adopted, he agonized over what to do. In the end, though, he left in the middle of the night, making an abrupt but final decision, only leaving a note on his bed for his parents to find in the morning.

50.
 51. He hitchhiked his way to London, where he knew no one and had, seemingly, zero prospects. But he had his trumpet and fiddle, along with a bit of money he’d saved up over the years, and he managed to get through his first couple nights by staying in bed and breakfasts. He spent his first days in London busking, and checking out pubs for bands that were playing, and it was through sheer persistence that he managed to wedge his way into one of the local staples in Chelsea. He played the violin and occasionally trumpet for them at first, but he managed quickly to buy his own guitar, an instrument he had only rudimentarily taught himself how to play at that point.

52.
 53. From there, things skyrocketed. He immersed himself more and more in music, which had become a viable option for him purely because he could no longer see himself doing anything else. He crashed with another young man he’d met around the scene, an arrangement that only truly worked because they had such conflicting hours that they rarely saw one another around their shoddy little flat. Impulsivity ruled Peter’s life, though, and at times, like when he managed to get himself into different groups or find an odd job to pay his rent, it worked. Other times, like when he decided to marry a girl he’d only met two weeks prior, it most vehemently did not work.

54.
 55. Upon losing his bachelor status, he didn’t budge on giving up his free time at all. This proved to be a problem for fostering a relationship. Ultimately, numerous problems, including the couple’s youth, led to divorce when Peter was twenty years old. Listless and coming apart at the seams, he bought an impulsive plane ticket to the United States, where he traveled around living a bit on saved money but mostly on tips he got from busking. For a couple months, he lived in the Pacific Northwest, and the connection stuck. Though he went back to England and started taking acting jobs to get himself by, he didn’t forget about his interest in Washington and Oregon.

56.
 57. But acting wound up paying the bills in a big way, and he was able to put together and release his first album in 2008. He learned the rhythm of things, and learned how to operate within the confines of the industry. He kept acting to finance his music. Occasionally, this meant selling out; he wasn’t too fussed about that, though. His focus was on his music, and if being in overly romanticised bullshit movies allowed him to continue releasing his own work, he was more than happy to go for it. By 2014, he released his third full length album, scored a film soundtrack, and begun work on a fourth album. He had, of course, also filmed a truly cringe-worthy film featuring music written by a romantic couple and featuring Anne Hathaway.
