  1. >You are Applejack
  2. >And you are sitting in a bar
  3. >The bartender occasionally checks ups on you while you nurse a bottle
  4. >Mac got himself hitched
  5. >Bloom got her mark and moved out
  6. >And Granny passed long ago
  7. >Soon the Acres will be on your shoulders alone
  8. >Sure you have your friends, but you could never ask them to help when they have their own lives
  9. >Business has been as lively as ever, but with Mac gone and you left to manage the orchard, you've had to hire some help
  10. >Which really cuts into the profits
  11. >Free labor was the one thing keeping business afloat, but now it's not looking to hot
  12. >With a heavy sigh, you take another swig
  13. >The worst, however, is the emptiness you feel
  14. >Your days consist of taking stock, managing finances, and overseeing employees
  15. >The lonely nights almost crush the life out of you as you lay on your pillow
  16. >You've spent your entire life - all your blood, sweat, and tears on this farm
  17. >And for what?
  18. >Pride?
  19. >Stubbornness?
  20. >Not wanting to disappoint your parents?
  21. >It doesn't matter now
  22. >All you've got to show for your efforts is a sore back and an empty bed
  23. >Suitors weren't that common, but there was always someone asking
  24. >Unfortunately, they always asked too much
  25. >They never thought of you or your life and goals
  26. >Just wanting a pretty wife to cook for them
  27. >Naturally, they were all met with a a swift "No."
  28. >No one was ever like him
  29. "Anon..."
  30. >The sweetest man you've ever met
  31. >And one of you're greatest friends
  32. >Anon was always looking out for others; never once putting himself first
  33. >Any compliment given was shrugged off with a blush and a "It was nothing."
  34. >Not a proud bone in his body
  35. >When the single mothers talk about no more good men, he's who they're referring to
  36. >The girl he married would be the luckiest in the world
  37. >And that girl was almost you
  38.
  39. >You can feel tears welling in your eyes as you recall that day again
  40. >Anon had just finished helping you with the fall harvest
  41. >A bitter wind whistled through the trees, sending a shiver down your spine
  42. >You should have taken Granny's advice to wear more than just a scarf
  43. >Your discomfort must have been noticeable, as you soon felt something drape over your shoulders
  44. >The warmth instantly soothed your cold bones and comforted you
  45. >Turning around, you see it was Anon who had given you his coat
  46. "Well, thanks. But what about you? Ain't ya gonna get cold too?"
  47. >He dismissed it with a wave of his hand
  48. >"Nah, I'll be fine."
  49. >The sun began to set, but the coat kept you warm
  50. >Anon, however, was miserable
  51. >You could see his arms coated in goosebumps
  52. >But he never said a word
  53. >Once the last basket of crisp apples was in the cellar, you turned to him
  54. "Ah'd say we call it a day. Now let's get inside an' warm up."
  55. >Anon tried to hide a shiver
  56. >"Yeah, I'd like that."
  57. >Mac and Bloom were already by the fireplace, drinking Granny's famous hot chocolate with cinnamon
  58. >Granny hands you two mugs with a wink
  59. >You blush and hand Anon the other mug, which he graciously accepts
  60. >...
  61. >Hours have passed and the rest of the family has gone to bed
  62. >Only you and Anon stayed up
  63. >Both of you moved into the kitchen to finish your drinks
  64. >You were still wearing Anon's coat while he only had a t-shirt
  65. >Not exactly wanting to take off the cozy coat, you grab a blanket from the closet and drape it over his shoulders
  66. "Returnin' the favor."
  67. >You could swear you saw his cheeks darken in the dim light
  68. >During one of the lulls in the conversation, Anon let out a chuckle
  69. "What? What's so funny?"
  70. >"Nothing. I just never noticed how cute you were."
  71. >You can feel you cheeks burn a little too
  72. "Aw shucks, Anon. Ah'm nothin' special. But thanks fer th'compliment."
  73. >Your reaction must have been wrong, as Anon starts sputtering
  74. >"I-I'm sorry, I don't mean to... I think I should go."
  75.
  76. >You could only watch as Anon hurriedly walks to the front door and leaves
  77. >You stare at the door for a good minute before heading upstairs to bed
  78. >Did Anon really just call you cute?
  79. >Maybe he's... interested in you?
  80. >No, no. He's just a friend.
  81. >Besides, why would he want a frumpy farm girl like you?
  82. >He'd probably laugh in your face at the very idea
  83. >You finish brushing your hair and climb into bed
  84. >...
  85. >Anon continued helping on the farm
  86. >He never made any more comments about you
  87. >...
  88. >Years passed and many young men had set their eyes on you
  89. >You dated some and rejected others
  90. >Their puppy dog eyes always hurt, but it had to be done
  91. >Anon was also getting looks from the ladies, but he never acknowledged them
  92. >In fact you don't even remember him ever having a girlfriend
  93. >Eventually, your friends began drifting apart
  94. >Not because of bitterness, but wanting to move on with their lives to bigger things
  95. >Can't say you blame them
  96. >You couldn't leave, as you had the farm, but you wished them all the best of luck
  97. >Anon was one of the last of your friends to leave town
  98. >All of you tried to remain in touch, but eventually the letters stopped
  99. >Even Anon's letters...
  100.
  101. >The occasional visit from a friend here and there was like gulping fresh air after almost drowning
  102. >But even the visits stopped
  103. >All you had left was your family and your job
  104. >And you were determined to make the best of it
  105.
  106. >Tears were now freely falling onto the stained counter
  107. >Heavy sobs drowned out the conversation next to you
  108. >You quiet down to listen
  109. >"-please."
  110. >"Uh, right away, sir."
  111. >You feel warmth coming from your right and make the conclusion that someone just sat down
  112. >Turning away, you rub your puffy eyes
  113. >Even if this is a stranger, you still don't want to be seen like this
  114. >"Ma'am? Are you alright?"
  115. >Oh great, a busybody
  116. "Yeah, yeah. Ah'm fine. Don't think y'can buy me a drink and Ah'll sleep with ya."
  117. >"S-Sorry, I didn't mean anything like that."
  118. "Yeah? Well, it's hard t'tell."
  119. >The two of you sit in silence until the barkeep serves his drink
  120. >"Here you are, sir."
  121. >"Ah, thanks."
  122. >Through your blurry eyes, you can see him lift the mug to his mouth and take a swig
  123. >He lets out a satisfied sigh and you catch a whiff of his breath
  124. >But it's not the pungent smell of alcohol
  125. >It's sweet
  126. "Hey mister, what's in that mug anyway?"
  127. >"This?"
  128. >He swivels the mug
  129. >"Some hot chocolate."
  130. >You scoff a little
  131. "Y'all came to a bar fer some hot chocolate?"
  132. >He chuckles
  133. >"Well, the cafes are all closed now. And the only other place to get it is a couple miles away."
  134. "There ain't any resteraunts miles away. They're all around here."
  135. >"I wasn't talking about a resteraunt."
  136. >Must be in town visiting his folks
  137. >You kinda want to see what his stranger looks like, but your puffy eyes and beer goggles have other ideas
  138. >Your mind starts wandering back to Anon and the tears flow again
  139. >"Ma'am, are you sure I can't-"
  140. "WHY DON'T YA MIND YER OWN DAMN BUSINESS?!"
  141. >You didn't see much of anyone after that
  142.
  143. >In a rage, you swing at him
  144. >But you miss terribly and lose your balance
  145. >You fall off the stool and hit the ground hard
  146. >The entire bar crowds around you
  147. >You can feel yourself being lifted off the cold floor
  148. >Despite your now aching head, the pain sobered you up
  149. >You can start to make out the many faces staring down at you
  150. >All except the one closest to you, the one holding you up
  151. >Your eyes try to focus on it
  152. >"Ma'am! Please say something!"
  153. >Oh great, it's the jackass
  154. "Ah said..."
  155. >You rear back for another swing when your eyes decide to finally work
  156. >The eyes are the first thing you notice, follwed by the nose
  157. >Then the jawline and finally the ears
  158. >No...
  159. >This must be a sick joke
  160. >It couldn't be...
  161. "A...Anon?"
  162. >The man's eyes become misty and he talks through choked sobs
  163. >"Yes, Applejack, it's me..."
  164. >Your mind cannot function anymore and flips on autopilot
  165. >As if by some other force, you feel your arms wrap around him
  166. >He quickly does the same
  167. >Even more tears begin flowing, but these don't sting your eyes like the others do
  168. >Anon can sense your imminent outburst
  169. >"Shh... let's get out of here."
  170. >He scoops you up and carries you outside
  171. >There's a small bench outside the bar
  172. >He lowers you down onto it and takes a seat for himself
  173. >Composing yourself briefly, you look up into his eyes
  174. >They're wet and full of concern
  175. >Again, your body acts on its own and you reach out to touch his face
  176. >As if to test if he's real
  177. >The pressure of the tears becomes too great and you start sobbing right there
  178. >Anon gently cups the back of your head and presses it to his shoulder
  179. >With this last act of tenderness, you cry
  180. >You cry the hardest you have in years
  181. >He stays firm and strokes your back through the entire ordeal
  182. >All your frustration
  183. >All your regrets
  184. >All of the posion you kept bottled up was finally released
  185. >You could literally feel yourself getting lighter as the tears were shed
  186. >Soon your loud sobs became quiet whimpers
  187.
  188. >All you could hear was your breathing and Anon's heartbeat
  189. >Anon himself never made a sound
  190. >Picking your head off his chest, you wipe your eyes and gaze into eyes
  191. "Heh, ya don't know how good it is t'see ya, Anon."
  192. >His lips curl in a smile
  193. >"I think I can guess."
  194. "So what brings ya back? Town is th'same ol' borin' place it was ten years ago."
  195. >"I dunno, just feeling nostalgic."
  196. >You give his arm a playful punch
  197. "Liar."
  198. >"So how about you? Doing okay?"
  199. "Ye- Well, I've been better."
  200. >"Oh. You still working at Sweet Apple Acres?"
  201. "Where else would I be?"
  202. >"I remember one your letters saying Mac and Applebloom had moved out. I thought you might have, too."
  203. "The orchard's in my blood, Anon. Ah'm not gonna let mah folks down."
  204. >"So I assume you and your husband are continuing the Apple line?"
  205. "Er... no."
  206. >"But you always said you wanted a big family."
  207. "Ah do! But... Ah never married."
  208. >Anon's body goes rigid for a split second
  209. >"I'm sorry."
  210. "How about you, huh? Ya can't go pryin' in someone's love life without spillin' yer own!"
  211. >He pauses
  212. >"To tell the truth, not so great."
  213. "Aw, what's wrong? Handsome feller like you should have no trouble findin' a girl."
  214. >"It's not finding a girl that's hard, it's finding the right one."
  215. "Oh, yer lookin' fer THE ONE, huh? Never pictured you th'type t'get hitched."
  216. >Anon chuckles and looks off into the distance
  217. "She's out there somewhere, don't worry."
  218. >"But she's not out there, she's right here."
  219. >Is he...?
  220. "Anon?"
  221. >He turns his head back to face you
  222. >"I didn't come back to walk down memory lane; I came back for you, Applejack."
  223. >This must be a dream
  224. "Wh-What makes me so special? I'm sure other girls-"
  225. >"Other girls don't have what you have. Other girls remind me that there's some better that I let slip away."
  226. >Anon looks you dead in the eye
  227. >"Other girls make me realize I need y-"
  228. "Then why did ya wait so long?!"
  229. >Your outburst surprises you moreso than Anon
  230. "Haven't ya though Ah might need you too?!"
  231. >He winces
  232.
  233. >"I'm sorry! I wanted to confess years ago. But I was afraid. Afraid I'd knock on your door and find... another man."
  234. >He takes a breath and continues
  235. >"I had finally mustered enough courage to visit town. When I saw the farm in the distance, I chickened out and came to the bar instead."
  236. >You soflty stroke his arm
  237. >"I had planned to get my ass drunk. That way I'd have enough courage to face whoever opened that door. But when I got inside and saw you, my stomach fell through the floor. I immediately remembered that fall evening when we drank the hot chocolate your grandmother made. So I ordered some and sat down next to you."
  238. "Sorry fer bein' so rude..."
  239. >"Nah, I deserved every bit of it."
  240. >The two of you share a laugh
  241. >"But now that everything's in the open... I have to know..."
  242. >Anon takes a nervous gulp
  243. >"Applejack, w-will you still have me?"
  244. >This... This is it
  245. >What your heart has yearned for
  246. >But it's been so long...
  247. >Is the spark still there?
  248. >Only one way to find out
  249. "Of course, sugarcube!!"
  250. >You wrap your arms around his neck and bring your lips to his
  251. >Anon is tense at first, but you feel his muscles relax
  252. >The kiss ends as soon as it began
  253. >You embrace each other on that bench, chest against chest
  254. >The beating of your hearts became perfectly synched as rain began drizzling
  255. >Anon removed his jacket and draped it around the both of you
  256. >Once again, you were soothed and comforted by his warmth
  257. >Then, as if possessed by a lusty demon, you whisper in his ear
  258. "Don't worry, I'll return the favor~"
  259. >And you didn't need to swear this time; Anon's cheeks were definitely red
  260.
