  5. Vocabulary: Descriptive Adverbs = Adverbs of Manner
  6. - Adverbs that tell us how a verb is done: He ate quickly/hungrily/slowly/messily/noisily/etc.
  7. She smiled sadly/happily/shyly.
  8. Profits increased sharply/slightly.
  9. - Most of these adverbs are formed with adjective+ly
  10. (Exceptions: hard, fast, early, late, likely; good/well)
  11. “Working hard or hardly working?” (“hardly” = “almost not”)

  13. p. 75-76 practice 2A - Underline the adverbs of manner and circle the verbs they modify.
  14. - Usually adverbs of manner go after the verb.
  15. - Some adverbs can go before the verb if the verb has an object.
  16. They will attract people’s attention easily. / They will easily attract people’s attention.
  17. (The opposite could be, “They won’t attract people’s attention easily” or “It will be difficult to attract people’s attention.” We don’t use “difficultly”.)

  19. Topic sentences for how-to paragraphs often refer to the steps or instructions.

  26. If you want to succeed with your yard sale, you should follow these instructions. (“should” because it’s possible to have a good yard sale with different steps)

  28. To get a Massachusetts driver’s license, you must follow these steps. (In this case, if you don’t follow exactly the right steps, you won’t get a license.)

  30. Concluding sentences often include the same information, but might talk about the steps in the past:
