  1. -- visceralVanguard [VV] began gentlemanly conversing with ancientApostle [AA] --
  2.
  3. [14:12] <visceralVanguard> The people I was able to get in contact with at the New Netherlands Institute of Technology can confirm that SBURB is not the work of NorwayNet.
  4. [14:12] <visceralVanguard> SBURB appears to be a rather awful RPG-style remake of The Sims 47. That enterprise was unfortunate enough as it was, so I am uncertain of why Faucet finds it necessary to make it even worse.
  5. [14:13] <visceralVanguard> I'm rather suspicious, but the game seems innocous (and dirt cheap) enough to warrant some preliminary investigation! I purchased it for practically nothing from one of the Faucet servers.
  6. [14:13] <visceralVanguard> I don't want to get too involved with it in case Faucet is somehow using it to undermine NorwayNet. This could be a most intriguing adventure! *dons monocle*
  7. [14:13] <visceralVanguard> I did see the letters SABATH flash on the screen briefly. Do you know what that is all about? Have you found out anything? You seemed inquisitive about how we all were set up in the memo, and I've never seen you pass up an opportunity to dig into one of your curiosities. ;)
  8. [14:13] <ancientApostle> interesting, i did a bit of searching and wasn't able to find anything
  9. [14:14] <ancientApostle> but i did start the game
  10. [14:14] <visceralVanguard> Ooh!
  11. [14:14] <ancientApostle> i didn't see anything about "SBURB" but "SABATH" did come up after a bit of meddling in the game
  12. [14:15] <visceralVanguard> I am in the process of booting mine up, but I have yet to make it anywhere past the main menu.
  13. [14:15] <ancientApostle> it isn't very interesting
  14. [14:15] <visceralVanguard> Odd. My main title screen was the SBURB logo and everything, but it said SABATH for a split second before fixing itself, almost as though it wasn't supposed to be there.
  15. [14:16] <ancientApostle> i actually didn't see any title at all
  16. [14:16] <visceralVanguard> Oh really? What makes you say that?
  17. [14:16] <visceralVanguard> Is it not very engaging?
  18. [14:16] <ancientApostle> there was only one room that i was able to see, one character, and extremely frustrating UI
  19. [14:17] <ancientApostle> all i did was deploy a hard drive
  20. [14:17] <ancientApostle> and move a bed around
  21. [14:17] <visceralVanguard> I presumed that was the most likely issue with a remake of a game 47th in a series of already questionable quality.
  22. [14:17] <visceralVanguard> That really does sound quite terrible.
  23. [14:17] <ancientApostle> the setting was odd though
  24. [14:17] <ancientApostle> it seemed like something out of a history book
  25. [14:18] <visceralVanguard> Only one character appears on the screen? That's certainly different from the Sims. Were you able to customize them at all? That was a big selling point of The Sims 47, for some reason.
  26. [14:18] <ancientApostle> no customization
  27. [14:18] <ancientApostle> just a boy wearing a green hoodie
  28. [14:18] <visceralVanguard> Deploying a hard drive in a historical time period? No customization? I must say I'm very confused what Faucet is trying to accomplish here.
  29. [14:19] <ancientApostle> yeah, and with no information available?
  30. [14:19] <visceralVanguard> I suppose that explains why it cost so little.
  31. [14:19] <visceralVanguard> It almost seems like it wasn't supposed to be released yet.
  32. [14:19] <ancientApostle> maybe...
  33. [14:20] <visceralVanguard> If there's very little publicity and a poorly-designed/underdeveloped UI.
  34. [14:20] <ancientApostle> do you have any idea what the "SABATH" could mean?
  35. [14:21] <visceralVanguard> My instincts tell me it's either an acronym, someone's name, or some sort of code/encrpyted phrase.
  36. [14:21] <visceralVanguard> It's not a game I've ever heard of.
  37. [14:21] <ancientApostle> it just seems kind of random
  38. [14:21] <visceralVanguard> Agreed.
  39. [14:21] <ancientApostle> "SBURB" fits in with the sims, being set in a suburb
  40. [14:22] <ancientApostle> but "SABATH?"
  41. [14:22] <visceralVanguard> But if you said yours is in a historical time period?
  42. [14:22] <visceralVanguard> Not a suburb?
  43. [14:22] <visceralVanguard> What sort of historical time period?
  44. [14:22] <ancientApostle> it seemed maybe early 2000s
  45. [14:22] <visceralVanguard> E-Wars? Early 20th Century?
  46. [14:22] <ancientApostle> pre-e-wars
  47. [14:22] <ancientApostle> maybe
  48. [14:22] <visceralVanguard> That's intriguing, indeed.
  49. [14:23] <ancientApostle> so you haven't seen anything but a loading screen?
  50. [14:23] <visceralVanguard> I wish my copy would start up more quickly! With all of the Faucet-NorwayNet competition and attacks, my mom and I have set up a pretty extensive firewall around most of our house.
  51. [14:24] <visceralVanguard> I suppose it helps that we live just outside of town so we don't need to worry as much about the Network Service Providers trying to get in the way with their bureaucracy.
  52. [14:24] <visceralVanguard> I've tried dialing down some of the settings, but it seems that the game still requires a network connection, which is odd.
  53. [14:25] <visceralVanguard> I don't want to open up all of the firewalls just for some silly game, but at the same time I'm curious!
  54. [14:26] <ancientApostle> we aren't going to get any closer to solving this without your copy
  55. [14:26] <ancientApostle> mine has barely given me anything
  56. [14:26] <visceralVanguard> Are you able to interact with your environment much?
  57. [14:27] <ancientApostle> mine? or the game's?
  58. [14:27] <visceralVanguard> In The Sims 47, you could even bring in a demolition drone to break down your Sims' houses!
  59. [14:27] <visceralVanguard> The green-hoodie person's environment.
  60. [14:28] <visceralVanguard> While it was a terrible game, it at least let you gain some personal entertainment from causing much folly in your Sims' lives. :)
  61. [14:28] <ancientApostle> i can move things around, but i can't explore because he closed his door
  62. [14:28] <ancientApostle> i haven't tried the other tools though
  63. [14:29] <ancientApostle> i made a tiny pyramid with some of the smaller items in his room
  64. [14:29] <visceralVanguard> Him closing the door keeps you from looking around? That seems like yet another poor design decision.
  65. [14:30] <ancientApostle> it does seem to inhibit progress
  66. [14:30] <ancientApostle> i'm not sure why someone would make that design choice
  67. [14:31] <visceralVanguard> Can you do anything to bring him back into the room?
  68. [14:31] <visceralVanguard> Maybe make a ruckus or something?
  69. [14:31] <ancientApostle> he is in the room
  70. [14:31] <ancientApostle> sitting there
  71. [14:31] <ancientApostle> eating a sandwich
  72. [14:31] <visceralVanguard> Perhaps if you make enough noise, you can get him to come back and open the door to investigate.
  73. [14:32] <visceralVanguard> Can you try breaking the door down?
  74. [14:32] <visceralVanguard> Just throw something big at it?
  75. [14:32] <visceralVanguard> Or maybe take the sandwich and throw that at the door so he has to go over there?
  76. [14:32] <ancientApostle> with the control over the environment i have, even if i couldn't break it down, i could tear it off it's hinges
  77. [14:33] <ancientApostle> and he seems so content with his sandwich
  78. [14:33] <ancientApostle> but I'll try that
  79. [14:33] <visceralVanguard> Isn't that the point of The Sims though? To mess around with their programmed and overly-simplified lives?
  80. [14:34] <visceralVanguard> If it were real life that would be one thing, but you can always just restart the game if this isn't going anywhere.
  81. [14:34] <ancientApostle> true, but it doesn't feel right
  82. [14:34] <ancientApostle> i'm going to try to progress further before restarting
  83. [14:35] <visceralVanguard> Restarting is always very disappointing. We shouldn't give up that easily!
  84. [14:35] <ancientApostle> exactly!
  85. [14:36] <visceralVanguard> Hopefully I'll have a different setup than you so we can help each other.
  86. [14:36] <visceralVanguard> Maybe it's a puzzle! That would certainly be an adventure!
  87. [14:36] <ancientApostle> i'm going to go see if i can progress anymore
  88. [14:37] <ancientApostle> i'll message you when i get further into the game
  89. [14:37] <visceralVanguard> It could be a cross between The Sims and a point-and-interact adventure game. That would be an odd combination.
  90. [14:37] <ancientApostle> good luck with your download
  91. [14:37] <visceralVanguard> Good idea. I don't want to be a bother and keep you distracted from more important things.
  92. [14:37] <visceralVanguard> I hope you have fun!
  93. [14:38] <ancientApostle> you too!
  94.
  95. -- visceralVanguard [VV] kindly bid ancientApostle [AA] farewell --
