Now the story? It’s a mind fuck and REALLY REALLY good. Ardyn is the modern Kefka, he IS FF6 and the king of kings.

Bahamut gave the Crystal and the Ring of Lucii to the First King… Ardyn.

The prosperous kingdom called Solheim was the culmination of Lucis, Accordo, Tenebrae, and Niflheim all together under one kingdom.
When Ifrit betrayed the Astral Gods and unleashed the Starscourge onto Solheim, Ardyn Lucis Caelum from the territory of Lucis had an amazing gift to heal the scourge absorbing them into his own body.

Ardyn originally both a king and healer, denied the heavens ascension due to absorbing the demons that Ifrit unleashed with the Starscourge to end humanity, Ardyn cleansing the world of the demonic taint, but when doing so and he took the ‘scourge’ into himself he became the Accursed an immortal, walking the earth forever.

Ardyn tries to use the Crystal to ascend to death. The Crystal refuses to give Ardyn the power to die, because he is impure of body and mind.

The Astral gods having now known realized he had tainted himself so they chose another King to replace him, Noctis’ bloodline, the Izunia’s who are now the Lucis’.

The new King (Izunia’ now Lucis) casts Ardyn out, he loses his name, his fame, his heritage, and his place in the world. Ardyn claims this is what turns him into a demon. Bahamut, who is probably more trustworthy, says that Ardyn had become a demon already through absorbing the demons and becoming immortal from Starscourge.

    “But a jealous king, one not yet chosen by the Crystal, ostracized and demonized this healer of the people. Making a true monster of him.”

This line I think is way more important than we realize. I think here is where Ardyn snapped – while all this time he was a pure-at-heart healer blessed by light who could purify demons, he was paradoxically being demonized for the power that saved so many lives. It brought darkness into his heart and mind. The demons inside took advantage of this and corrupted his body. And in this state he was no longer able to be deemed worthy by the crystal.

    “One so impure of body and soul was deemed unworthy of the Crystal’s light, and forbidden to ascend.”

    “Two individuals were chosen by the gods to lead mankind to survival: the first Oracle, a woman from the Fleuret family; and a man from the Lucis Caelum family who received two gifts from the gods: the crystal and the Ring of the Lucii.”

Bahamut says forbidden to ascend. So while Ardyn was chosen to bear the ring and given the crystal as the person who could lead mankind to survival, he was never actually deemed worthy to ascend as a true king. He was chosen and given both at first, but the crystal did not deem him worthy due to his corruption.

    Two thousands years pass

Ardyn waiting for a King chosen by the Crystal so he can exact his revenge and end the traitors who betrayed him. Everything comes to a head when Ardyn returns to the Empire in order to start creating demons again in collation with Ifrit, to enact his revenge. The events of the anime, movie, and game take place all during this time as Noctis is a child to present day game time.
Ifirit helps Ardyn, because Ardyn is now the central and sole source of his star scourge.

Ardyn then tries to get revenge on the crystal, his immortality, and the King of Lucis family line all at once. And succeeds.

Ardyn takes the name Ardyn Izunia, his enemies family name when he introduces himself.

Ardyn had to wait for generations for a chosen, Noctis, who with the “Ring of the Lucis” is ready to absorb all the power of the Crystal. He also gets lucky that this true king does not have any heirs, he kills Luna for this reason. Noctis would never know happiness and to be married to his love.

    – ENDING –

Sum it up…
Everyone dies (Noctis doesn’t win), Ardyn wins and gets his revenge.
Noctis dies and kills Ardyn in the Astral plane, Ardyn wins ending his immortality putting him to rest.

Ignis, Gladio and Prompto die protecting Noctis.
Noctis dies at the end removing the power the Astral six from the Ring Bahamut gifted to the King which also cleanses the world of the scourge and Ardyn.

Noctis was born to die.
In the end him and Luna are reunited in death.

The camp scene Noctis breaks down, knowing he is dying the more he goes on carrying the weight of the Kings Arms and wearing the Ring of Lucii zapping his life away.
