  51.
  52. This guide provides an overview of the licensing, pricing, and
  53. packaging for VMware vSphere® with Operations Management™
  54. 5 and VMware vSphere 5. The key topics discussed in this guide
  55. include:
  56.

  66.
  67. VMware vSphere with Operations Management 5 is licensed on a
  68. per-processor basis. Each physical processor (CPU) in a server
  69. needs to have exactly one vSphere with Operations Management
  70. processor license key assigned to be able to run vSphere with
  71. Operations Management. vSphere with Operations Management
  72. license keys can be purchased, deployed and managed in the
  73. same way they were with vSphere 5.x.

  83. Operations Management
  84. Overview
  85. VMware vSphere with Operations Management 5 is the next
  86. generation of the vSphere platform. vSphere with Operations
  87. Management combines the world’s leading virtualization platform
  88. with best-in-class management capabilities. This new product
  89. line enables users to gain operational insight into vSphere while
  90. also optimizing capacity. As vSphere environments grow, it is
  91. essential that users have proactive management that can deliver
  92. monitoring, performance, and capacity information. Customers
  93. can optimize their virtualization platform by reclaiming unused
  94. capacity, rightsizing virtual machines, improving utilization,
  95. and also helping to increase consolidation ratios. By using
  96. vSphere with Operations Management, customers can double
  97. their IT savings and improve capacity utilization by 40% and
  98. consolidation ratios by 37%1 within their vSphere environment.
  99. For more information on the differences between vSphere
  100. with Operations Management and vSphere, please refer to the
  101. Packaging Overview section.

  158. No Limits on Physical Resources
  159. There are no restrictions on physical cores or physical RAM with
  160. vSphere with Operations Management 5.
  161. No Limits on Number of Virtual Machines
  162. There are no restrictions on the number of virtual machines that
  163. can run on each properly licensed vSphere with Operations
  164. Management 5 processor.
  165. Two Components Under a Single License
  166. VMware vSphere with Operations Management 5 combines
  167. two components (vSphere and VMware vCenter™ Operations
  168. Management Suite™ Standard) into a single product with a
  169. single license. All virtual machines running on a properly licensed
  170. VMware vSphere with Operations Management processor can
  171. use all components. vSphere with Operations Management is not
  172. decomposable: the two components of a vSphere with Operations
  173. Management edition behave as a single entitlement. Upgrades
  174. occur on an edition basis only – vSphere and vCenter Operations
  175. Management Suite components cannot be upgraded independently.

  180. VMware vSphere with Operations
  181. Management and VMware vSphere
  182.
  183. VMware vSphere 5 Licensing: Per-Processor
  184. vSphere 5 is licensed on a per-processor basis. Each physical
  185. processor (CPU) in a server needs to have at least one vSphere
  186. 5 processor license key assigned to be able to run vSphere.
  187. vSphere 5 license keys can be purchased, deployed and managed
  188. in the same way they were with vSphere 4.x.
  189. No Limits on Physical Resources
  190. There are no restrictions on physical cores or physical RAM with
  191. vSphere 5.
  192. No Limits on Number of Virtual Machines
  193. There are no restrictions on the number of virtual machines that
  194. can run on each properly licensed vSphere 5 processor.
  195. VMware vSphere 5 for Virtual Desktop Deployments
  196. VMware vSphere Desktop is specifically designed for licensing
  197. vSphere when used to run virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).
  198. It can only be used as virtualization platform for VDI deployments
  199. with either VMware Horizon View™ or third-party connection
  200. brokers. For more details, see the Packaging Overview section.
  201.
  202. License Management
  203. vSphere 5 and vSphere with Operations Management 5 licenses
  204. are simple license keys (25-character alphanumeric strings) that
  205. contain encrypted information about the vSphere (or vSphere
  206. with Operations Management) edition or kit purchased and
  207. the processor quantity. These license keys do not contain any
  208. server-specific information and are not tied to a specific piece of
  209. hardware. This means that the same license key can be assigned
  210. to multiple vSphere hosts, as long as the sum of physical
  211. processors on those hosts does not exceed the encoded license
  212. quantity in the license key.
  213. Centralized Licensing with No Single Point of Failure
  214. vCenter Server is the recommended interface for license assignment
  215. to vSphere and vSphere with Operations Management hosts.
  216. When a license key is assigned by vCenter Server, it is copied to
  217. the host and saved in a persistent format. If the host becomes
  218. disconnected from vCenter Server, the license key remains active
  219. on the host indefinitely, even after a host reboot. Only a deliberate
  220. licensing operation by the user can remove or replace a host
  221. license key.
  222. Decentralized Licensing Option
  223. VMware recommends that customers assign all vSphere and
  224. vSphere with Operations Management licenses centrally through
  225. VMware vCenter Server.
  226.
  227. However, vSphere customers have the option to assign their
  228. license keys directly to individual hosts. There is no difference
  229. between directly and centrally assigned license keys. When a
  230. vSphere host is added to the vCenter Server inventory, any
  231. license key already on the host will become available for
  232. management, reporting and assignment in vCenter Server,
  233. just like any license key added directly via vCenter Server. For
  234. more information on vSphere licensing, visit http://www.vmware.
  235. com/support/licensing.html.
  236.
  237. Licensing Example
  238. In this section we will cover the key elements of vSphere with
  239. Operations Management 5 licensing using an example.
  240. Licensing New Hosts with vSphere with Operations
  241. Management 5
  242. For this example, a user has two 2-CPU (each with 6 cores)
  243. hosts with 128GB of physical RAM each that they wish to license
  244. with vSphere with Operations Management 5 Enterprise edition.
  245. Each physical CPU requires a license, so four vSphere with
  246. Operations Management 5 Enterprise licenses are required. No
  247. additional licenses will be needed regardless of the number of
  248. virtual machines, amount of virtual memory (vRAM) or physical
  249. cores or RAM.
  250.
  251. Packaging Overview
  252. VMware offers several packaging options that are designed for
  253. customers to meet their specific requirements for scalability, size

  502.
  503. VMware vSphere Essentials Kits are all-in-one solutions for small
  504. environments (up to three hosts with two CPUs each) available in
  505. two editions— Essentials and Essentials Plus (see Figure 3). Both
  506. editions include vSphere processor licenses and vCenter Server
  507. for Essentials for an environment of up to three hosts (up to 2
  508. CPUs each). Scalability limits for the Essentials Kits are productenforced and cannot be extended other than by upgrading the
  509. whole kit to an Acceleration Kit (see Paid Edition Upgrades
  510. section below). vSphere Essentials and Essentials Plus Kits are
  511. self-contained solutions and may not be decoupled, or combined
  512. with other vSphere editions.
  513.
  514. vCenter Server provides unified management for vSphere
  515. environments and is a required component of a complete
  516. vSphere deployment. One instance of vCenter Server is required
  517. to centrally manage virtual machines and their hosts and to

  538. is sold separately. A minimum of one year of SnS is required.
  539. vSphere Essentials Kit for Retail and Branch Offices and
  540. vSphere Essentials Plus for Retail and Branch Offices are
  541. special editions designed for deployments in branch offices of
  542. midsize or large enterprises. These editions offer a packaged
  543. solution to extend agility, security and efficiency across the
  544. organization and allow remote management of the office
  545. deployment either locally (via the vCenter Server Essentials
  546. included in the offering) or from a central location (via vCenter
  547. Server Standard). Retail- and branch-office editions require a
  548. minimum purchase of a Starter Kit (forty processor licenses
  549. covering ten sites) plus the ability to add on sites as required
  550. (customers can purchase Add-on Kits containing two processor
  551. licenses). Customers can deploy these licenses on a maximum of
  552. three hosts (up to 2 CPUs each) per site and centrally manage
  553. multiple sites through one instance of vCenter Server Standard.

  595. Entitlements for Existing
  596. Customers
  597. vSphere customers with an active SnS contract are entitled to
  598. version upgrade to vSphere 5.1 at no extra charge. All version
  599. upgrades to vSphere 5.1 require acceptance of the new end-user
  600. licensing agreement (EULA) and vSphere 5 licensing model
  601. (see Figure 4).
  602.
  603. Paid Edition Upgrades
  604. from vSphere 5 and
  605. vSphere with Operations
  606. Management 5
  607. Customers may purchase an upgrade to a higher vSphere edition,
  608. to a vSphere with Operations Management edition, or to a
  609. VMware vCloud Suite edition (see Figure 5). For example,
  610. vSphere Enterprise Plus customers may upgrade to vSphere
  611. with Operations Management Enterprise Plus or to any vCloud
  612. Suite edition. When customers upgrade supported licenses to
  613. a higher edition, the original license key is deactivated and a new
  614. license key is issued for the upgraded edition. A SnS contract for
  615. the edition upgraded to must be purchased at time of upgrade
  616. purchase. This new SnS contract will be extended by the original
  617. SnS contract value remaining on the edition from which the
  618. customer upgraded. SnS contracts as short as two months
  619. are available for customers with a significant value remaining
  620. in their existing contract. This process ensures that only a single
  621. license key exists that has a single SnS contract with a single
  622. termination date.

  693. FAQ
  694. Q. How is vSphere with Operations Management 5 licensed?
  695. A. vSphere with Operations Management is licensed on a perprocessor basis without limitation on the number of virtual
  696. machines, cores or amount of physical RAM.
  697. Q. How many license keys will a customer get when they
  698. purchase vSphere with Operations Management?
  699. A. vSphere with Operations Management will show up in the
  700. customer’s license portal as a unique entitlement. This
  701. entitlement will generate one license key that the customer
  702. will activate in vCenter Server.
  703. Q. Are there VMware Acceleration Kits for vSphere with
  704. Operations Management?
  705. A. Yes, there are three Acceleration Kits associated with the three
  706. editions of vSphere with Operations Management. These
  707. Acceleration Kits will replace the vSphere 5.x Acceleration
  708. Kits. Each kit consists of six processor licenses for vSphere
  709.
  710. Q. Is it acceptable to have both vSphere hosts and vSphere
  711. with Operations Management hosts managed under a
  712. single vCenter Server?
  713. A. VMware recommends managing only a single vSphere with
  714. Operations Management edition under a vCenter Server
  715. instance to simplify license management and compliance. If
  716. you must run multiple vSphere with Operations Management
  717. editions (or both vSphere with Operations Management and
  718. vSphere/vCloud Suite) under a single vCenter Server instance
  719. (mixed environment), you can still be compliant. To be compliant
  720. in a mixed environment, you must ensure that all virtual
  721. machines are properly licensed for the functionality being used
  722. (e.g., capacity management provided by vCenter Operations
  723. Management Suite Standard). A virtual machine can be
  724. properly licensed either through a vSphere with Operations
  725. Management license (on a per-processor basis) or a standalone
  726. product license (on a per–virtual machine basis).
  727. Q. Is it acceptable to have both vCenter Operations on a
  728. per-VM basis and vSphere with Operations Management
  729. on a per-CPU basis? (e.g. customer adds vSphere with
  730. Operations Management into existing vCenter Operations
  731. Mangement environment)
  732. A. Yes, this is acceptable as long as license compliance is
  733. maintained.
  734.

  736.
  737.
  738. Q. Does the new vSphere 5 licensing model—per-processor
  739. without limitation on the number of virtual machines, cores
  740. or amount of physical RAM—apply to both vSphere 5.0 and
  741. vSphere 5.1?
  742.
  743. Q. Can vSphere Desktop be used to run third-party desktop
  744. management and infrastructure tools or third-party server
  745. products for desktops?
  746.
  747. A. Yes. The vSphere 5 licensing model applies to both vSphere
  748. 5.0 and 5.1 customers. This also applies to vSphere with
  749. Operations Management customers.
  750.
  751. A. As per the vSphere 5 EULA, vSphere Desktop standalone
  752. can be used for hosting virtual desktop machines or desktop
  753. management and monitoring tools that are used for VDI
  754. deployments only.
  755.
  756. Q. Does the new vSphere 5 licensing model apply to existing
  757. licenses of vSphere 4.x or prior?
  758.
  759. Q. What is the impact to Horizon View bundles or Horizon
  760. View add-on SKUs?
  761.
  762. A. No. The new vSphere licensing model applies only to new
  763. purchases of vSphere licenses or to existing licenses of
  764. vSphere 4.x or older that are version upgraded to vSphere 5.
  765.
  766. A. There is no change to the price of the Horizon View bundles.
  767. We encourage customers to consider Horizon View bundles
  768. for all their new desktop virtualization deployments. The
  769. bundles are designed as the cost-effective solutions for
  770. large-scale desktop deployments.
  771.
  772. Q. When version upgrading to existing licenses for vSphere
  773. 4.x or older to vSphere 5, may I maintain the vSphere 4.x
  774. licensing model?
  775. A. No. In order to complete the upgrade, the new vSphere 5
  776. EULA must be accepted.
  777.
  778. How to Buy
  779.
  780. Q. Can I apply the vCenter Operations functionality included

  802. government customers who want to purchase new licenses
  803. of vSphere for only host desktop virtualization. Customers
  804. who purchase the Horizon View bundles get vSphere Desktop.
  805. Q. I am currently using vSphere Enterprise Plus to deploy a
  806. third-party desktop virtualization solution. Can I continue
