Hunger Strikers Update on Negotiations with Hospitals: News on Specific Cases
and Official Decision about the Hunger Strike

Chicago, IL. After a morning of protests at Christ Medical Center, during which one protester was needlessly arrested by Oak Lawn police, the hunger strikers were able to secure a meeting with Christ Medical Center representatives including Chief Operating Officer Michael D Wilkins and Tony Mooney Gardner, Manager of Public Affairs. This meeting represented a formal first step in negotiations with Christ Advocate Health Center.

Hunger strikers will update media on the specific points of the two-hour discussion with the hospital representatives, as well as reviewing the agreements reached with UIC Medical Center and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The Hunger Strikers also have specific information on the fourteen cases who have been in communication with various hospitals and can update if they have been accepted or not for evaluation as part of the process for being considered for the transplant waitlist. Finally, the media will be notified on official decisions regarding the hunger strike.

“This has been a victory for the patients. The hospitals have agreed to begin a dialogue with the hunger strikers but this fight is not over” said Father Jose Landaverde.
