- cheap (for a thing) - expensive
- economical - uneconomical
- poor - rich
- p. 106 part 1 - Discuss with your partner(s) whether these statements are true and why or why not. (If none of you understand a word, use a dictionary, not a translator.)
- The ‘b’ is silent in “debt” and “doubt”.

- Grammar: articles
- p. 107 part 7 - Why are these articles used in the sentences in part 5.
- the world - there’s only one world (the Sun, the Moon, the ocean)
- (no article) banks - banks in general
- the interactive voice system - this was mentioned before, so we know which system it’s about
- a new cell phone banking plan - this is the first time it’s mentioned
- For particular statements (not generic), use “the” when both the speaker and the listener know which one(s) the sentence is about. Use “a” or “an” or “some” or no article otherwise.
- For generic statements, we usually use no article (and the plural for countable nouns).
- For singular count nouns, we always need a determiner. If it’s not “the”, use:
- “a” before consonant sounds: a European, a university, a one-way street (/y/ and /w/ are consonants)
- “an” before vowel sounds: an apple, an onion, an hour, an honest man, an mp3 player (empeethree)
- Grammar: other determiners
- quantifiers - all books, all money, each book, every book (“each” and “every” are singular)
- possessives - his book, my money, their classes, John’s girl, a lion’s heart
- the student’s books = the books of one student
- the students’ books = the books of many students
- the children’s books = the books of many children
- the princess’s books = the books of one princess
- the princesses’ books = the books of many princesses
- Charles’s books = the books of Charles
- (We don’t add the possessive ‘s’ if we already have a plural ‘s’.)
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- new subject + new verb = new sentence
- (or use “and” or another conjunction, or a semicolon; not just a comma)
- ---
