  6. yard = the large grassy area around a separate home (common in the US)
  7. yard sale = a sale of your family’s used items from your own yard (also “garage sale”)
  8. flea market = a market for the same kinds of things, but in a central location with many other sellers

  12. Three Basic Sentence Types:
  13. 1 statements: We will have a yard sale next Saturday.
  14. subject + verb
  15. (statements can be affirmative or negative)
  16. 2 questions: What are you going to sell?
  17. 1st verb + subject (+ other verbs)
  18. (questions can be yes/no, information, or subject questions)
  19. 3 commands: Come to the sale and find out.
  20. (no subject) + base form of the verb
  21. (We understand the subject is “you”, but we don’t say it in commands.)

  24. - If it’s important that some steps are completed before others.
  25. (A recipe for cooking something is in time-order.)
  26. list-order
  27. - If you can do the steps together or in any order.

  32. 2 list (you should do the things at the same time)
  33. 3 time (you have to remove the dirty oil before you add new oil)
  34. 4 list (you can do the things in any order)
  35. 5 list (you can do all the things together)
  36. 6 time (you can’t start with reading books in the new language)
  37. (You could write a list-order paragraph about how to practice the new language.)
  38. 7 time
  39. 8 time (You have to think of ideas before you can write the conclusion.)
  40. 9 time (You have to know the rules before you take the test. You have to take the test before you go to the office.)
  41. 10 list (you can do the things in any order)

  43. These can be combined. It’s not important whether you get apples or bananas first, but you should probably get frozen food last, for example. You have to cut the vegetables before you put them in the soup, but it doesn’t matter if you cut the potatoes or the carrots first.
