  1. "Pax" (Program-4X or P4X, Homo sapiens novus)
  2. Concept: Escaped Artificial Human
  3. Pax is a manic-psychotic gene-engineered transhuman specially designed to pilot a cybernetic bio-mech, functioning as a wetware computer system and biological artificial intelligence.
  4.
  5. "Pax", a name bastardized from his formal designation, appears as a tall, unearthly human, with long blonde hair and unnaturally pale skin. He would fit all of the criteria for being considered conventionally attractive, were it not for obvious features that belay his engineered nature-- the numerous plugs and entry ports across his body, the external spinal implant running along his back, the hanging connection cables and areas where skin gives way to expose machinery underneath. In addition to this, his features are slightly unnerving; as part of the engineering process, his limbs are too long, as are his digits, such as his fingers. He wears a standard skintight pilot suit that has a bulky neck collar, as well as having some exterior implants-- such as a visor-like tactical interface.
  6.
  7. As part of the suite of modifications applied, he is biologically incapable of feeling sadness or depression or pain or any one of many feelings that would negatively impact pilot performance, leaving him only capable of feeling an alien sense of utter happiness. He is fatalistic and well aware that, statistically speaking, he will die a horrible death, but cannot feel any sort of sadness from the inevitability of said fate-- if anything, he is remarkably cheerful and undisturbed by the prospect of his own demise. Pax has had little to no exposure with others besides scientists and the handlers assigned as part of the 4X Program, leaving him utterly incapable of understanding most social cues-- because of this lack of social capabilities and his short maturity, he is extremely gullible and incapable of noticing ulterior motives. Various forms of conditioning and indoctrination make him pliant and obedient towards anyone he designates as being a 'superior', such as a commanding officer. The only time he feels anything else is when piloting, where his system is artificially flooded with a mixture of stimulants and aggressors to chemically encourage better combat performance, resulting in an artificial mixture of joy and bloodthirstiness.

  9. Originating from an unknown black-ops laboratory and skunkworks, Program-4X was the cornerstone of a project to eliminate many of the perceived fallibilities of mech pilots-- lengthy therapy sessions to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder, inter-pilot rivalries distracting from combat performance, love interests, stress, depression, recklessness, sleep, so on. By creating a gene-engineered transhuman and incorporating cybernetic implants, the scientists involved created a biological artificial intelligence-- while Pax is human-shaped, his mind is more akin to that of a computer rather than that of a human. By linking this wetware computer system to a cybernetic bio-mech, the project hoped to achieve an optimal combat unit, capable of fighting excellently and obeying orders under any circumstances while not running into the odd AI tendency to attempt to kill humanity, thanks to its biological nature. The P4X project, unfortunately, had both its biological robot and gigantic biomechanical destroyer stolen, and the P4X series was cancelled before any actual deployment. Pax himself cannot fully remember the circumstances of his kidnapping, or even many critical memories of his time within the laboratory, leaving his origin a mystery even to himself-- he knows he is not human, and recalls the training and interactions he had, but not any of the names or identities of the individuals monitoring his development.
  10.
  11. Through a series of circuitous events, Pax and his symbiont mech found themselves at the one place a social reject with no skills outside of piloting giant robots could go: mech anime school.
  12.
  13. Genre Reason: Duty
  14. Pax is a living weapon, created to supplant the horrors of war from humans onto a cheap, expendable clone. He was engineered for war and has spent his life preparing for the moment, from combat exercises to applying theoretical knowledge of tactics to studying the sciences involved. He pilots because he is incapable of anything else; there is no other place for him, and his own genetic programming only reaffirms this. He is not willing to die for another so much as that he is incapable of anything less.
  15.
  16. Genre Typecast: Lost
  17. Conversely, placing him in his new environment means that he is entirely out of his element-- he has never talked to someone who was not examining or testing him. Whatever hobbies and personal interests he developed were seen as idiosyncratic glitches to be ironed out in the next development cycle, and his own mood is subject to cybernetic manipulation outside of his control. The outside world has no place for him, and he is an outsider in it: a curiosity at best, and a threat at worst.
  18.
  19. Genre Bane: Alienation
  20. Pax does not understand how to interact with others-- he understands orders and commands and questions, but not small-talk or idioms or even what he wants for himself. This, unsurprisingly, makes him remarkably inept in any sort of social situation.
  21.
  22. Myrmidon-II:
  23. Concept: Prototype Biomechanical Berserker
  24. Pax's mech, the Myrmidon-II (after the Myrmidon-I malfunctioned horribly and resulted in the cancellation of the P-3X series), is a hybrid synthesis of machine and flesh-- it utilizes a metal skeleton that an ossified bone-like tissue is grown onto as an anchoring surface; from there, flesh is grown onto the mech, with immense strands of biological muscle driving its locomotion and brain tissue directing its motions. Mechanical cabling serves as a nervous system, and other systems-- such as for delivering nutrients and oxygen to its musculature-- are also mechanical, allowing it to function in conditions that would normally be impossible for a biological entity. Its armor is a combination of metal and biological carapace, giving it an odd, semi-organic appearance. A variety of mechanical components-- such as sensor arrays, vents and cooling systems, and so on-- unnaturally protrude from its armor. The brain that directs it is partially lobotomized; Pax effectively plugs into this brain, serving as its severed functions. The Myrmidon is effectively a living creature-- albeit, one contained in armor and with most of its organs ripped out and substituted for synthetic ones. However, it still has a core of biological nervous tissue, and while said tissue is lobotomized and only functional with Pax's mental input, the machine as a whole has a limited means of learning from mistakes. It is designed for close-range combat-- utilizing serrated claw-like protrusions, metal teeth, and bony spines as weapons. When heavily damaged, the mech is capable of growing and extending these claws and spines into a much more lethal weapon, capable of penetrating multiple layers of mech-grade armor. It also comes equipped with a gigantic gun, just in case.
