  1. Jeanna arrived in 2000
  2. Jan had VR lab in 2nd floor SC
  3. Negotiated to get space for graduate students prior to arrival, got 4th floor SC
  4. There was a PC lab in ERC with cisco networking academy
  5. Jeanna got a grant to repurpose that lab to be the ITL
  6.
  7. First spring was in 2001, taught undergrad OS.
  8.
  9. started using vmware for hands-on OS labs in the present-day ITL
  10. Another professor suggested that COSI room be used as COSI.
  11. Jeanna jointly wrote letter to TC, he agreed.
  12.
  13. IBM Linux challenge:
  14. Advanced OS class was mix of undergrad + grad students
  15. Submitted all projects from Advanced OS class, 5 submissions
  16. 1600 submissions, 25 winners, 6 in North America, 3 from CU!
  17. Won stuff.
  18.
  19. CU administration reacted by providing a budget
  20.
  21. At this point, had 4th floor, 2nd floor, COSI, ITL, ERC/Library PC lab.
  22. To consolidate, the present-day ITL became the ITL, and COSI officially became COSI
  23.
  24. Meetings were wednesday nights.
  25. No longer had ERC space.
  26.
  27. At some point, 4th floor space became a conference room.
  28. Which was OK, because it was a lousy space anyway.
  29.
  30. Late one night, people took a jackhammer to ITL wall, had to do community service, etc.
  31. Not long after, applied to Reckler family foundation. (sp?)
  32. This let us renovate, add a server room.
  33. VR lab was doing a wheelchair project, but it was on the 2nd floor.
  34. This made little sense, so VR lab was moved into COSI room.
  35.
  36. Math dept claimed half of the 2nd floor space at some point.
  37.
  38. There is a long list of contest wins.
  39.
  40. To be continued.
  41.
  42. Q: Was the jackhammer the direct cause of renovation?
  43. A No. Had already been talking about how nice it would be.
  44. Person who did it had some construction experience, and took matters into their own hands.
  45. Someone called campo due to noise.
  46.
  47. No one had to pay for it, but those responsible had to do community service.
  48. Jeanna thinks that was even unecessary.
  49.
  50.
  51. Q: Brick missing from front wall of COSI?
  52. A: COSI had that adjacent room for awhile.
  53. That room was to be used to work with some particular company.
  54. There was a rack in there at one point. Possibly some signs of that left via holes in wall, etc.
  55.
  56. Q: Was the Reckler (sp?) grant a one-time thing?
  57. A: It was several installments.
  58.
  59. MCS are soon to be more separate depts.
  60. A proposal recently specified that CS dept would only have the COSI budget.
  61. That would stink.
  62. Jeanna suggested to look at recent historical expenditures to choose a budget.
  63.
  64. Q: MCS split details?
  65. A: Possibly end of this academic year. Already separate depts within a division.
  66. Plan is to split budgets and chairs but share a secretary.
