  1. 00:43 Disaster_Area so how bout u anything exciting on your end of things?
  2. 00:44 Jellicent playing some online poker atm
  3. 00:44 Jellicent been cleaning up past gens c&c a bit this weekend
  4. 00:45 Disaster_Area interesting stuff
  5. 00:45 Disaster_Area i never was too big of a fan of poker but i guess its ok so long as ur not gambling lots of money oO
  6. 00:45 Disaster_Area anything interesting coming out of the past gens c & c ?
  7. 00:46 Disaster_Area that barely gets any analyses as far as i'm aware
  8. 00:46 Disaster_Area the only place rby or adv analyses are written is PP usually xD
  9. 00:46 Disaster_Area or are u getting people to write new analyses?
  10. 00:47 Jellicent free to play, can win money, though
  11. 00:48 Disaster_Area oh nice
  12. 00:48 Disaster_Area you know what else is
  13. 00:48 Jellicent and the only i got up so far was a bw lc tirtouga revamp
  14. 00:48 Disaster_Area free to play but can win you money?
  15. 00:48 Disaster_Area PP's RBY and GSC Seasons :L
  16. 00:48 Jellicent interesting...
  17. 00:48 Jellicent though i'm kinda on a poker fix lately
  18. 00:48 Disaster_Area £30 prize for winning an RBY Season
  19. 00:49 Disaster_Area $55 AUS iirc for winning a GSC season
  20. 00:49 Disaster_Area and there's prizes for second and third
  21. 00:49 Jellicent we've had a game going on at work all summer, nickle and dime blinds, initial buy-ins were $2
  22. 00:50 Jellicent finally cashed out of that game, since it looks like that place is basically done
  23. 00:50 biggie i didn't get the NJ job Jellicent :c
  24. 00:50 Jellicent
  25. 00:50 Disaster_Area nice jelli and :c biggie
  26. 00:50 biggie tho i did get to check out yardley, pa
  27. 00:50 biggie which was a really cool town
  28. 00:51 Jellicent yeah
  29. 00:52 Disaster_Area oh well checking the old gen c&c i see that
  30. 00:52 Disaster_Area dan's got a celebi analysis in the works and most of the way there
  31. 00:52 Disaster_Area that's great
  32. 00:52 Disaster_Area btw he's done a lot of adv analyses on PP jsyk
  33. 00:52 Disaster_Area not celebi but like 10 other mons
  34. 00:53 Disaster_Area i dont know what's really the rules between us and smogon about
  35. 00:53 Disaster_Area using eachothers analyses esp when a writer is a part of both communities
  36. 00:53 Disaster_Area probably something we ought to discuss though
  37. 00:53 Disaster_Area since it'd make a lot of sense for example for us when this celebi analysis is done to have a copy on PP especially as that's where the majority of Dan's analysis work has been thusfar
  38. 00:54 Disaster_Area also since our new GPer is also an official smogon GPer iirc (it's Sobi btw) then their GP stamps on any analyses should count too lol
  39. 00:55 Jellicent there's no way sharing analyses would fly on this end
  40. 00:55 Disaster_Area hm
  41. 00:55 Disaster_Area interesting. Why's that?
  42. 00:55 Jellicent also, counting up my change, already more than i expected, which is nice so far :3
  43. 00:55 Disaster_Area great ^_^
  44. 00:56 Disaster_Area but yea I like I think when for a metagame that's very similar on either and the writer uses both Smogon and PP and writes analyses on each
  45. 00:56 Disaster_Area the writer should be allowed to copy or plagiarise parts of their own analyses onto the other site
  46. 00:56 Jellicent copywrite issues / desire for unique content / possible plagiarism / etc.
  47. 00:56 Disaster_Area i think we had this issue come up b4 btw um
  48. 00:57 Disaster_Area i spoke in the smog irc i think about
  49. 00:57 Disaster_Area what if I wanted to make a copy of a smog article of my own on PP
  50. 00:57 Disaster_Area they said best thing to do was to make a new version
  51. 00:57 Disaster_Area if I do that
  52. 00:57 Disaster_Area which I did
  53. 00:58 Disaster_Area but it seems very messy; who would have intellectual property rights over the content of a smog article? Would it be wholly one of the writer or smogon or would it be a mixture of both? Similarly for analyses
  54. 00:58 Disaster_Area Since we're now at a crossroads where this is actually a relevant conversation it's one we really should be having, with people from both sides
  55. 00:58 Disaster_Area Do you think?
  56. 00:58 Jellicent when you contribute content to a site, that contribution becomes property of the site
  57. 00:59 Disaster_Area surely that's not the whole story though. Like for example
  58. 00:59 Disaster_Area with facebook say, it doesn't entirely own all of the pictures on it
  59. 00:59 Jellicent unless specified that your contributions will remain your own copywrite, you can usually assume it's no longer yours
  60. 01:00 Disaster_Area if a user requests that a photo be taken down they can do it and under certain conditions I believe may be legally obliged in the US though I'm unsure
  61. 01:00 Jellicent facebook can use those photos however they want...
  62. 01:00 Jellicent true
  63. 01:00 Disaster_Area and if a user posted a photo they first post on facebook
  64. 01:00 Disaster_Area elsewhere on the internet
  65. 01:00 Disaster_Area facebook couldn't take that photo down on copyright grounds surely?
  66. 01:00 Disaster_Area or could they?
  67. 01:01 Jellicent you're claiming copywrite on something when you upload it to a site like facebook or youtube
  68. 01:01 Disaster_Area if they can't then evidently some of the rights of that property posted online remain with the original posted
  69. 01:01 Disaster_Area *poster
  70. 01:01 Jellicent that's why they'll delete stuff that isn't actually yours
  71. 01:01 Disaster_Area well youtube doesn't nessecarily deletebut sometimes it'll give revenue to the original rights-holders instead
  72. 01:01 Disaster_Area so why is it that
  73. 01:02 Disaster_Area when youupload to fb / yt you're claiming copyright, but not on a forum such as smogon
  74. 01:02 Disaster_Area also another question
  75. 01:03 Disaster_Area about versions
  76. 01:03 Disaster_Area how much needs to be changed for something to be considered a version rather than infringing on those copyright restrictions for example in the cases of articles and analyses
  77. 01:03 Jellicent you're still claiming copywrite when you post something like an analysis (which is why we'll infract plagiarized work), but you're giving it up when you contribute. that's what you're contributing
  78. 01:03 Disaster_Area so does it only become smogon's property when it's uploaded to the smogdex
  79. 01:03 Disaster_Area ?
  80. 01:03 Disaster_Area or does it become their property at some point before then
  81. 01:04 Disaster_Area so for example could dan copy what he's currently written about celebi onto PP and then cultivate it there without infringing on copyright, or what if he does it before grammar and prose is done
  82. 01:04 Jellicent when you post it, i'd assume, unless you delete it yourself
  83. 01:04 Jellicent since analyses can be taken over
  84. 01:05 Jellicent and you'd have to look up plagiarism laws to figure out how much is "too much"
  85. 01:05 Disaster_Area well this is definitely complex
  86. 01:05 Jellicent since there's a lot of gray there
  87. 01:05 Disaster_Area I feel like it should be more than just us having this conversation
  88. 01:06 Disaster_Area like it'd be nice to come up with a modest agreement w/ smogon
  89. 01:06 Disaster_Area say that
  90. 01:06 Disaster_Area if a writer actively writes for both sites they have the right to post content that they made on one site onto the other
  91. 01:06 Disaster_Area would be an ideal agreement in my mind
  92. 01:07 Jellicent if that agreement was going to be made at all (and i doubt it would), it'd have to be made between chaos and lutra as site owners
  93. 01:07 Disaster_Area okay
  94. 01:07 Disaster_Area well, I'll share the whole of this conversation with Lutra, Cowboy Dan, and everyone else in the PP Skype chat, and we'll discuss what we want to do.
  95. 01:08 Disaster_Area If it ends up going badly I guess dan might have to delete that celebi analysis from smogon
  96. 01:10 Jellicent i mean, it's up to him if he wants to contribute to both communities or not. he just can't directly reuse the same contribution for both
  97. 01:11 Disaster_Area yeah I figure that but as u said grey area on what is and isn't fine and
  98. 01:11 Disaster_Area there's little sense to different versions of analyses just to get around copyright laws
