  1. Hello out there, fellow taiwanese animated feature fans. This text file gives an overview of the changes I have made in the accompanying subs for ANE's Bakemonogatari release. The list is not comprehensive as the changes, especially to dialogue, are pretty drastic. That said, most of the major changes should be mentioned here at least in part (as well as some trivial ones). I do not speak moon, so this is just a lot of heavy editing, rather than an actual retranslation. As a warning, I tend to be pretty informal in my READMEs.
  2.
  3. The base subs are ANE's, which according to their website, consist of: "Dialogue: gg (1-13), pem (14-15), Typeset/OPs/EDs: qIIq (modified)." The TV rip subs, downloaded off BakaBT, were consulted in some instances. The official Aniplex NA subs have been incorporated as well when appropriate (which was frequent, but not total - see the section below which details this). ANE was working on a v2 that apparently is never going to get finished, so I got their working copy of it and stole some of their changes.
  4.
  5. This is the fourth release of my fixed subs, and mention near the bottom what has changed.
  6.
  7. Before we begin proper, I will note that I am a single person, and have no one else willing nor able to check over all fifteen scripts to make sure I haven't missed something or fucked up in general. I've checked it through myself a few times, but as they say: to err is human; to forgive... is not something I should expect from /a/.

  9. ==============================================================================================================
  10.
  11. === De-weebifying ===
  12. Honourifics
  13. There really is no reason to leave the untranslated honourifics in the subs. Most do not impart any information that is not already present in Bake through the character's actions, tone, or other dialogue. In cases where they are relevant and it makes sense to translate them, I did. Notably, Nadeko's "Koyomi onii-chan" has become "big brother," as I feel this best reflects her childlike tone. Karen and Tsukihi's "nii-chan" has been changed to "brother," as "bro" is more for frat boys.
  14. Anime/Manga
  15. The words anime and manga, in moonspeak, mean cartoons and comics (respectively). The English loanwords actually have a slightly different meaning than their Japanese counterparts (that is, Japanese cartoons/comics). Half the instances were already translated to cartoons/comics anyway, so I just made it consistent.
  16. Ace
  17. We don't say "[sport] ace" in English. We say "[sport] star." All instances of the word should be changed to reflect this.
  18. Baruhara Combo
  19. In Tsubasa's explanation of the name, she uses "baruhara" in places where it's not needed (basically in all except one line), so I fixed it in such places to "Valhalla." I also changed "combo" to "duo" as that makes much more sense in English.
  20. The subtitles you don't know
  21. I've removed the ED subtitles (both the English and romaji karaoke) for episodes five and eight. Considering there is actual dialogue being spoken at the same time, it's unnecessarily distracting.
  22. Wasei-eigo
  23. "Service" in Ep2 is now "treat." "Juice" in Ep3 has been changed to "soda."
  24.
  25. === Consistency ===
  26. Name order
  27. Names in dialogue used the Family Name/Given Name order, but the signs used the opposite, Western order (usually). It's been normalised to use the elevens' order.
  28. ‰öˆÙ/Oddity
  29. In the series, the characters use "kai'i" to describe supernatural phenomena (i.e. the crab, snail, monkey, snake, and cat). This was translated largely as "oddity" in ANE's release, so I decided to stick with that. There was an instance or two of "aberration" (an older translation) left in, as well as a number of signs translated as "spirit" or even "strangeness." I even spotted one text card that translated it as fucking "monster." They should all be "oddity" now.
  30. Capitalisation of oddity names
  31. In the first few episodes, the names of oddities were not capitalised. Then at some point (maybe Suruga Monkey, Part Three) they were. I decided to make it consistent and use mother/father rules (that is to say, lowercase except in direct place of a name) for all of them (namely: heavy stone god and its variations, lost cow, rainy devil, snake constrictor and its variations, and meddlesome cat).
  32. A Black Hanekawa by any other name...
  33. Hanekawa's oddity has a lot of names. The proper oddity name was subbed as both meddlesome cat and meddling cat, and was normalised to the former. Meme also has another name for it, which was subbed as three different things through the release (perverted cat, dirty cat, and blocat). I changed them all to perverted cat. Finally, ANE's release has bakeneko subbed as ghost-cat, but not always with the dash. It always has the dash now.
  34. Radio show
  35. In episodes thirteen and fourteen, we get to hear about a radio show. However, when the pseudonyms were mentioned again in the latter episode, they weren't the same. I changed it to be consistent, both in excepts from the show (where it was the exact same) and the pseudonyms.
  36. Sorry, I stuttered
  37. The running joke with Mayoi and Koyomi about stuttering was subbed differently each time, despite the fact that they were the exact same lines being used each time. It's all the same now, as it should be. And no, I did not change it to "I flubbed it."
  38.
  39. === Flashing text? Nisio is deep bro, better get that shit right ===
  40. Translation
  41. It's pretty obvious that whoever translated and/or edited the flashing text cards was different than whoever did the same for the dialogue - they're pretty drastically different in parts, in both content and style. In truth, I did not and do not see a reason to make the two identical, although this may be something to do for a future release. As long as the various key nouns remain consistent with the dialogue, as detailed in the section above, I took no issue with differences.
  42. Styling
  43. I wasn't about to check EVERY text card, but I did make an effort to normalise the styling on both the flashing single kanji (like Salt/Oven or Sleep/Treasure) as well as the title cards (like Episode 1 / Hitagi Crab, Part One / Typeface used for...). For the latter, I made some adjustments to blur and position as needed, depending on differences between said title cards. There are title cards at the end of each episode as well, but I didn't touch them on account of them showing up for only about a quarter of a second.
  44. Punctuation
  45. Text card translations have a problem of trying to replicate the punctuation that was used in moon, but not always. When I noticed, I tried to correct instances where it didn't replicate it and it was reasonable to do so, but I did not make a point of it.
  46. 2DEEP
  47. A lot of the 'animation no X' numbers were off (that is to say, the wrong numbers were used), especially in Suruga Monkey. I fixed them when I found them to be incorrect.
  48.
  49. === The dialogue needed improvement, dear lord ===
  50. Dialogue was all over the place: awkward phrasing, blatant grammar mistakes, and so on. There are far too many instances of changes on this front to even begin to name. Just trust me when I say it's a lot different and a lot better. I spent most of my time in this area.
  51.
  52. === Typsetting and timing is bitch work, and yet here I am ===
  53. Two-line sub length
  54. The subs often force line breaks at a certain point to make both lines in two-line subs as close in length to each other as possible. I made it occur even more often.
  55. Splitting and retiming
  56. Self-explanatory. I made adjustments to these two categories when appropriate, which didn't come up that often but I did enough on this front to make it notable.
  57. Specific changes, some stolen from ANE's v2
  58. Made "3" in the kizu preview move; first Bakemonogatari title card in Ep1; a bunch of signs at 15:17 in Ep1; several "(Front gates of) Naoetsu (Private) High School" signs in Ep1 and Ep11; expanded "rouhaku park" typesetting in Ep4 and Ep13, parallel to the "namashiro park" typesetting in Ep3; changed the "002-11" sign in Ep6 to actually cycle through each number shown; two "Tamikurasou" signs in Ep6; moved "oddity" sign above suruga's arm in Ep7 into the arm and made it match the kanji better; a couple "Black Scene" cards without signs in Ep7; added "HATE" sign in Ep8; "reference books" sign in Ep9; added previously-untranslated store sign in Ep9 (made up of five typeset signs); added a couple missing "blood" in Ep9; two new signs on the "houses for sale" billboard in Ep10; "Koyomi" in Ep9; "1" and "2" crime scene number markers in Ep11; two scrolling "Nya-ha-ha~" in Ep11; refined "oddity" signs during kaleidoscope and added a couple new ones in Ep11; scrolling oddity/girl names in Ep13; gave one of the "missing" signs in Ep14 a shadow to match the background; fixed up the Love & Berry arcade signs in Ep14 a bit; reused speed limit signs in Ep15 (from Ep1); "I've never told a lie" flashing individual characters in Ep15 changed to match the line in Ep14 and fixed to match the visuals better
  59. You can tell I rewatched Mononoke recently
  60. So, in a few instances that I found appropriate, I made parts of the sub line have a delayed reveal. Was this necessary? No, but I found it was an improvement for some cases of repetition and dramatic pauses. Anyways, I did it for the following: Ep3, when Koyomi repeats wrong three times; Ep4, when Koyomi repeats "bus gas blast" three times; Ep5, when Hitagi says she has to apologise; Ep5, when Koyomi says he's the one who met the snail; Ep7, for Meme's final line; Ep8, when the Rainy Devil repeats hate four times; Ep9, when Hanekawa separates her syllables in the bookstore; Ep10, for Meme's final line before the OP; Ep10, when flashback Nadeko asks if it's all right; Ep11, when Nadeko goes "E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-Excuse me!"; Ep12, in both instances of "that was how today"; Ep12, when Araragi says "thank you very much"; Ep13, in two instances of "is that right"; Ep13, when Hanekawa says "I don't know anything"; Ep14, for Meme's last line before the OP; Ep15, when Koyomi says Hitagi is his love; and Ep15, when Black Hanekawa says she'll certainly kill Koyomi.
  61. How many people worked on this?
  62. Long dashes and italics had, like, a dozen different variations through the series. Should all be consistent now.
  63.
  64. === Catchphrases don't work so well if they're constantly changing ===
  65. Tsubasa's catchphrase
  66. TV subs for Bake had her catchphrase as "I don't know everything, I just know what I know." This is OBJECTIVELY (preferentially) superior to the ATROCIOUS (less subjectively enjoyable) "I don't know everything, I just happen to know this." In truth, I think the latter has much less of a ring to it, and thus is less suited to catchphrase status. Thus, I have changed all instances to the former.
  67. Meme's catchphrase
  68. Well, he has a few, but "did something nice happen" was different in at least one instance that I found in a later episode. Should be corrected. Similarly, "Miss Class Rep" became "Prez" in the last few episodes; I changed the latter to the former.
  69. Hitagi's "catchphrase"
  70. Her little "ara, sou" should be "oh, is that so" in every instance, now.
  71.
  72. === Little Bart... Little Lisa... Little Marge... and the rest! ===
  73. Episode five tongue-twister
  74. There are two notable tongue-twisters in the series - one with Mayoi, and one with Black Hanekawa. The latter was subbed into an English equivalent so as to make sense, while the accompanying text card had the translated Japanese original. I liked this, so when I compared it to the episode five twister than just subbed the romaji, it was a little disappointing - so I overhauled it. Using the explanation of the tongue-twister from the translator's note in the TV subs, I changed the written text to a direct translation. In the subs for the dialogue, I chose the 'dirty' tongue-twister "one smart fellow, he felt smart; two smart fellows, they felt smart; three smart fellows, they all felt smart." Of course, the joke is that you start saying "smelt fart" instead of "felt smart." The original line is supposed to be repeated three times, so I just took the first line of the English twister and said to repeat it. In addition, Mayoi actually says the original line incorrectly off the bat as something dirty, so I had her say the twisted line. Finally, she says the last line in the scene incorrectly, so I made a roughly equivalent mistake in her dialogue (smelt to smella).
  75. Daddy/Mommy
  76. Mayoi and Hitagi say these words at certain points. They're exceptionally childish and I changed them to dad/mom. While it could be conceivable that Mayoi, being an eight-year-old (but not really), could say mommy/daddy, it still bothers me. Mom and dad are more neutral, thus the change.
  77. Supernatural monsters
  78. "Nue" was subbed as "chimera." They're the same idea, but not actually the same thing. As such, I changed it to Nue; considering there's even an explanation flashed on the screen (enough time to read some of it, at least), it should be enough for people not familiar with it to understand it's a hodgepodge demon. You could argue that since bakeneko was translated to ghost-cat and youkai was translated to monster, that I should leave it; ultimately I feel the difference lies in that the chimera has its own legend and connotations unique to itself, and the nue has its own as well. Thus, introducing incorrect connotations is worse than losing irrelevant ones.
  79. [Grunt]
  80. I've noticed a number of interjections that have gone unsubbed. Since they were frequently subbed through the release, I've added them where I found appropriate.
  81.
  82. === NA boxset, a.k.a. I pity whoever paid $150 for "Mayoi Mai Mai" ===
  83. A major task for the v3 was the incorporation of the official subs in instances where they make more sense either in structure or meaning than the subs I've been working with. The instances I do use in whole or in part are noted here. Now, this should be nearly comprehensive, and each semicolon-delimited note below is not verbatim what I used, but just a reference to it. It'll be in order from the beginning of the show, so yeah. I haven't made it easy to check what I used, sure, but I felt like I just needed some bare minimum mention of what I took.

  99.
  100. === Welcome to Itchy & Scratchy Land, where nothing can ever possib-lie go wrong ===
  101. I made a few extremely obvious and unacceptably retarded errors in my v3: forgetting a couple letters, making a few capitalisation errors, and switching a couple words around. If I didn't feel compelled to complete this, I would have committed sudoku on the spot for these transgressions.
  102.
  103. === What's new in v4? ===
  104. Timing changes. Lots and lots of timing changes. That is the major focus of this release, fixing any unnecessary bleeding, doing a ton of splitting, increasing the focus on snapping to scene changes, etc. I said that I'd probably do signs and typesetting next in my v3 README, but that didn't really happen here - not in any major way. I gave the show a proper watch to catch inconsistencies and such, and as a result I also managed to perform a variety of other small(ish) fixes here and there - a number of unsubbed scene cards, a couple puns that became not puns in the translation, the mistakes I mentioned above, and more.
  105.
  106. ==============================================================================================================
  107.
  108. I said I needed to stop after my v3, but fuck - I guess I didn't learn my lesson. Whatever, I still somehow manage to enjoy this show despite how many times I've pored over the subs. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for fixes, you can contact me at [email protected]. I'll provide links to future versions at http://pastebin.com/3cZAcUCS.
  109.
  110. Take care.
