  4. 1b. Profile
  5. Name: Laguna Loire
  6. Faction: Unaffiliated (Syndicate).
  7. Function: Freelance Journalist
  8. Series: Final Fantasy 8-1
  9. Rank: N/A
  10. Quote: I speak with passion, from the heart! That’s what matters most.
  11. Profile: Laguna is a cheerful and kind man, but also terribly impulsive, with a bad habit of letting his mouth outrun his brain. Formerly a soldier of Galbadia, Laguna was discharged after going AWOL due to grievous injury. Recuperating in the sleepy village of Winhill, he wed his caretaker, Raine and lived happily with her and their adopted daughter, Ellone. However, when Ellone was snatched away by Esther, Galbadia’s nemesis in the Sorceress War, Laguna ventures back out into the world to save her. Teaming up with his war buddies, Kiros and Ward, he works as a journalist to fund their rescue mission.

  16. 3b. Advantages
  17. 3b-1. Advantages: Powers
  18. PARA-MAGIC: A system of energy manipulation, created to allow anyone to use magic. By drawing on the natural forces of the world and storing them in one’s body, one can create all manner of effects. All Galbadian soldiers are drilled in some form of para-magic, and Laguna is no exception. He specializes in water and ice magic, using it to drown, freeze or bludgeon his foes.
  19. 3b-2. Advantages: Skills
  20. MILITARY TRAINING: In the Galbadian military, Laguna was trained as a squad leader. As such, he is well-versed in using traditional military hardware, not just firearms and explosives, but also driving all manner of vehicles. He is also adept at commanding a small group, and developed something of a reputation for unconventional strategies. Although, whether or not that was brilliance or sheer luck is another matter.
  21. 3b-3. Advantages: Assets
  22. MACHINE GUN: The GASI-700 is a remnant of Laguna’s soldiering days and his weapon of choice. A casket-fed machine gun with multiple burst settings, it’s really nothing special, even within his world.
  23. GRENADES: Through old contacts in the Galbadian Army, Laguna manages to get his hands on basic fragmentation grenades.
  24. GRAPPLING HOOK: Another relic of Laguna’s soldiering days; the Highwind Wrist-Mounted Grappling Hook was handed out to squad leaders. It deploys a gas-powered hook strung with high-tensile thread with enough strength to pull Laguna up when the hook is retracted. It has a variety of uses in the right hands, but Laguna tends to use it for ridiculously risky manoeuvres.
  25. TRUCK: A lime-green convertible truck that Laguna ‘inherited’ from Ellone’s deceased parents. It’s how the group gets around.
  26. 3b-4. Advantages: NPCs
  27. KIROS SEAGILL: One of Laguna’s war buddies, Kiros is a patient, caring man. Typically acting as the most level-headed of the group, he does his best to curb Laguna’s impulsivity, with mixed success. Of the three, he has the most combat experience, having been trained to fight from an early age. In battle, he dual-wields katal, a type of punching daggers, to rapidly slice and stab his foes. To augment this, he also uses minor time manipulation para-magic to slow his opponents. In addition, his patient nature makes him quite suitable in using fire para-magic.
  28. WARD ZABAC: Another buddy of Laguna’s, Ward is a tall, intimidating man, but his brutish exterior belies a wise man with a heart of gold. A severe wartime injury has rendered him mute, but Kiros (and Laguna, to a lesser extent) can translate his expressions and body language for him. In battle, he wields a massive harpoon, using it to both bludgeon and pierce foes. In addition, he is adapt at para-magic that augments physical capabilities, as well as lightning para-magic.
  29. 4b. Disadvantages
  30. DIVIDED WE FALL: The three fight at their best as a cohesive unit, and this is what allows them to engage at all on the Multiversal stage. However, if they are broken up, they are much easier to pick off, especially by Elites (PL 29->27 if one is missing, PL 29->25 if one is alone. +buff only available when Ward is present, +debuff only available when Kiros is present.).
  31. IMPULSIVITY: As the de facto leader of the three, Laguna’s habit of rushing into situations has a history of embroiling them in deep trouble. He can be very flighty and lackadaisical, often coming up with ideas without thinking them through, and then going to carry them out without pausing to hash out the finer details.
  32. IDIOCY: Laguna is, to be frank, not very bright at times. He’ll make mistakes frequently, draw wrong conclusions, take wrong turns, and misremember instructions. With Kiros and Ward around, this can be mitigated somewhat. But since Laguna tends to take charge, his mistakes may go unnoticed by them until it’s too late.
  33. JOURNALISTIC INTEGRITY: Being a journalist is not just a means of paying hotel bills for Laguna. It’s actually a dream of his, and one he is determined to fulfil to the best of his ability. As such, he tends to go looking for something to publish, sometimes sticking his nose into places that powerful people might want to cover up. In addition, he’ll do his damndest to get a story published if he thinks it should be, even if those powerful people put pressure on him not to.
  34. ELLONE: The target of Laguna’s rescue mission is his adopted daughter, kidnapped by the xenophobic nation Esther for an unknown purpose. Laguna will usually ask people if they have seen her, and finding her is one of the few topics that can cause the man to become totally serious. As such, dangling information on Ellone is an easy way to grab his attention, and offering it is a sure-fire way to get Laguna to do something for you.
  35. WINHILL: Laguna’s home, Winhill, is a tiny village near Galbadia’s shore. Laguna left it behind to pursue Ellone, leaving behind his wife, Raine. As it offers little to the war effort, it is poorly protected. Thus, it would be easy for anyone wishing to hurt Laguna to attack it or go and threaten Raine. Even the threat of bringing harm to it is enough to give Laguna pause.

  39. Final Fantasy 8-1
  40. The world is at war. The technologically advanced superpower Esther, headed by the tyrannical Sorceress Adel fights against the only other superpower, the Republic of Galbadia, lead by president-for-life Vinzer Deling. This conflict will eventually be known as The Sorceress War. Battles seem to break out daily, with the ruined continent of Centra as the main battleground. The occasional skirmish takes place within Galbadia, but Esther’s natural fortifications makes pushing onto their soil difficult. Other powers, such as Trabia, Balamb and the Holy Dollet Empire are doing their best to remain uninvolved, but Galbadia have shown in the past it is willing to absorb smaller nations.

  42. C. CHARACTER INFORMATION
  43. 1c. Personality
  44. Laguna is a cheerful and kind-hearted man, always wearing a smile on his face. He has a genuine zeal for life and is happiest when he can go to new places, see new things and meet new people. His love for life gives him a rather optimistic view of things, making him see the grass is green, but even greener over there.
  45. However, he is something of a free spirit, and this causes authority to grate on him to some degree. Back when he was in the army, he would go against orders, go AWOL from his assigned post to go drinking and make fun of his superiors. He is the sort who does not give respect just because hierarchy demands it, and only respects those who earn it from him.
  46. His dream to be a journalist is, to a degree, a manifestation of his wanderlust and optimism. The idea of being able to transcribe his feelings into words and communicate it to others is deeply appealing to him. Though he only writes for a small-time magazine right now, he hopes to become more well known for his articles on the places he’s been and the people he’s met someday. He genuinely believes that by writing about his experiences of wartime and the beautiful things he’s seen can someday drive hate from people’s hearts and make them love living the way he does.
  47. But, he is also something of an idiot. He makes frequent mistakes, but never really lets them get him down, and will usually just laugh about them and push onwards. Though he does get flustered when pressed on them and will try and throw out some saying to make it seem like less of a big deal. However, he’ll usually flub such sayings, and they’ll come out backwards or with the wrong words.
  48. In spite of these frequent mistakes, Laguna is a fast friend to make and a good one to have. He’ll do right by them as best he can, and firmly believes in the goodness of them. He’ll always have an ear for what they have to say, and will always cheer them on and help them succeed. It is this loyalty to those dear to him that draws people to him, even when his foolishness should drive them away.
  49. Even in spite of his idiocy, Laguna has a firm sense of justice. He won’t stand idly by when he sees others being mistreated, stepping in to make his voice heard, even when this would bring a lot of trouble down on his head. This can be considered a combination of personal bravery and lack of foresight, sometimes with one contributing more than the other.
  50. Though goofy and outspoken most of the time, the two most important women in his life help to calm him down. Raine, his wife, inspires him to be calmer and more thoughtful while Ellone, his adopted daughter, drives him to be her hero in every possible way. Even just asking about the two can snap Laguna out of whatever he’s doing to reminisce about them.

  52. 2c. Background
  53. Laguna was born in Deling City, the capital of the Republic of Galbadia. His early years were mostly unremarkable, but when he became of age, he was drafted into the military as all able-bodied men were. He was assigned to the occupation of Timber, where he met Kiros Seagill and Ward Zabac. The three became fast friends, and would talk of their dreams for the future while shirking in their duties.
  54. One day, they went out to investigate a site of reported Esthar soldier activity in Centra (they actually had another mission, but Laguna took the wrong map) and discovered an unusual construction project before coming under attack by Esthar forces. The three fought through the structure, and were trapped between the enemy forces and a sheer cliff. They managed to fight the Estharians off, but Kiros and Ward were seriously injured, causing Ward to lose his voice. On the sea below, they could see Galbadian vessels, and decides to descend for rescue. Kiros and Ward simply leapt into the water, while Laguna tried to descend the cliff face, but slipped. He took serious injuries during the fall and was washed away in the tide.
  55. As luck would have it, he washed up on the Galbadian shore, near a small village called Winhill. He was taken in by Raine, the local bartender who grudgingly nursed the man back to health. Laguna stayed with her and her adopted daughter, Ellone. Despite playing no major part in the war, Winhill had recently come under attack by forces from Esthar, and Ellone’s birth parents died in the attack. Once he was back on his feet, Laguna began to pay back the village by protecting it from monsters. Eventually, Laguna and Raine fell for each other, and quietly got married.
  56. But one day, Esthar attacked again and this time, they snatched Ellone away. Laguna promised Raine that he would get her back, and got in touch with Kiros and Ward. The two agreed to join Laguna on his quest, and they set out from Winhill to find a way into Esthar.
  57. 3c. Power Level
  58. 29. With group tactics and simple magic, the three are quite formidable as a team. However, as mentioned in the ‘Divided We Fall’ disadvantage, they are not so powerful individually.
  59.
  60. 4c. Sample Pose
  61. The window of the hotel room rattles violently for the 35th time that day, another train rumbling along on the tracks directly outside. Said room was very cheap, but not just because there’s a train track right next to it. In Timber, there wasn’t a single hotel room that wasn’t some degree of ‘uncomfortably close’ to a train track. One of the downsides of being the transport hub for a whole continent.
  62. However, for two of the three men inside, this was considered blessed silence for them. Mainly because the third was too engrossed in a newspaper to be running his mouth off like he normally does. As such, they could munch away on their takeouts without offering monosyllabic platitudes to his complaints about the noise, of how uncomfortable his sleep was and how weird it was to be back in Timber after the war.
  63. All good things come to an end though, as the man with long dark hair holds up the front headline of the paper to his two fellows. It reads ‘WORLD UNDERGOES “UNIFICATION.”’ He throws it down on a coffee table that looks like it was made from the sludge at the bottom of the coffee. “Man, if we had been the ones to break this, we would be rolling in gil!” Laguna says.
  64. Ward’s scarred face shows a variety of expressions, in conjunction with some shrugging and hand-waggling. “Ward says that they would never print something this big from an unknown writer like you. And I agree, a lot of this sounds like a pulpy sci-fi book,” Kiros intones. “I know what he said! But still, this got me thinking...” Laguna mutters, getting that look in his eye that usually precedes him saying something especially stupid.
  65. “I wondered what that burning rubber smell was...” Kiros mutters, but Laguna is already going for it. “So there are all these worlds out there right? That means there’s a whole lot of places to write stuff about. And since no one from here has seen them, I’m breaking new ground! Timber Maniacs would eat that stuff up!” Laguna says, before taking a big bite from his burger to punctuate the point.
  66. Kiros and Ward look at each other, their faces mirroring the surprised look of the other. “That’s... actually not a bad idea,” Kiros says, Ward nodding along with the words. “Damn right it is! So once we finish eating, let’s pack and hit the road! Multiverse, here we come!” Laguna says with a voice full of exuberance as he points out the window. No doubt it would have been very inspirational had he been pointing at the sky, but another train chose that moment to rumble by, blocking the view.
  67. “Man, we’re packed already. Checkout is at 11, remember?” Kiros says, kicking at the suitcase that sits at his feet. Ward nods and hefts his own duffle bag. Laguna looks around the room at all this things scattered about. He then looks at his watch. 10:50. With speed he didn’t know he had, he crams the rest of his burger into his mouth and dives under the bed to fish out his underwear.
