  1. ### slide 1
  2. Good morning, my name is Yan, and this is my teammate Juan. We will talk about this paper, name is emerging market characteristics and supply network adjustments in internationalizing food supply chains.
  3.
  4. ### slide 2
  5. This is the outline. First is the introduction to the backgrounds of the problem, then is their framwork to show how they consider this problem. And then Juan will talk the analysis and conclusion parts.
  6.
  7. ### slide 3
  8. The big background is globalization in food supply network. Globalization makes international food supplier have more oppotunities, for example, Starbucks now is very welcome in China, even Chinese people do not always drink coffee. However, Globalization also makes the design of food supply network more complicated, because some environments in developed countries are different from in developing counties, like the availability of infrastructure and resource.
  9.
  10. In this paper, they use EM (emerging markets) to represent developing countries, like BRIC economies, so which four countires are BRIC economies? and use AM (advanced markets) to represent developed countries, like United States and Europe.
  11.
  12. Then the research problem of this paper is, how do EM characteristics affect the food supply networks of international firms? If we consider this problem as a data mining problem, then here EM characteristics is the predictors, and food supply networks are response variables.
  13.
  14. ### slide 4
  15. This is the research framwork in this paper, to show how EM characteristics impact food supply network.
  16.
  17. First, let's take a look at the market characteristics. In market characteristics, geography, resources and institutions (which is GRI here) are the important determinants of economic growth. Geography features are topography and population density, resources mean the availability of infrastrucutre, and instituitions are mutual trust and communication conventions for example.
  18.
  19. In order to adapt to fit the EM's characteristics, and finally improve or maintain the performance, SNs may have to be adjusted. SN adjustments require a broad SN configuration analysis, it integrates structual, operational, and relational dimensions at different levels. These are some of SN configurations, such as supply network structure.
  20.
  21. Futhermore, they indentified some performance indicators. So they could differenciate the changes in these performance indicators that result from implemented adjustments to sourcing, manufacturing, delivering, planning and customer service.
  22.
  23. ### slide 5
  24. In this paper, authors selected some focal companies to do the case study, and they tried to gain deep understanding of the phenomena of SN adaptation. These are five criteria to select those focal companies.
  25.
  26. ... ...
  27.
  28. ### slide 6
  29. Then they selected these five companies. This table shows the company turnover, bold font shows the home market that is AM, and this column shows the host market, these are EM, and this column shows their products.
  30.
  31. They used interview, documents and observations to collect data.
  32.
  33. And they did the within and cross-case analyses by tabulating the condensed case study data.
