  1. [21:22:03] <guest_32> please who can tell me what 'sardu' is ? is it an OS, or multiple OS's or what lets a DVD hold multiple OS's or is it something else ? please help
  2. [21:24:58] <camerongray> guest_32: It seems to be a piece of software that allows you to build a bootable CD/DVD/USB that can hold multiple different operating systems
  3. [21:25:39] <camerongray> So you would boot the CD and it would let you pick between multiple linux distros and it would then start the one you picked

  5. [21:29:38] <-- TheSchoenherr ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
  6. [21:29:58] <guest_32> am starting to get it a little bit. so first of all: what makes a DVD/cd/usb bootable is it the OS itself or another software that is separate but is included in the DVD ?
  7. [21:30:37] <camerongray> It's another piece of software called a bootloader, That "GRUB" thing that you see when booting some linux systems is an example of this
  8. [21:31:25] <camerongray> A bootloader is technically a very small operating system that's job is to start the main operating system
  9. [21:31:46] <guest_32> am sorry am familiar with Windows not with Linux
  10. [21:32:45] <camerongray> Ahh, Windows has a bootloader too
  11. [21:33:22] <camerongray> It's the program that the computer first runs, this tells the computer where to find the operating system
  12. [21:33:43] <guest_32> ok so the bootloader is what is actually making the DVD+the OS bootable?
  13. [21:33:48] <camerongray> Exactly!
  14. [21:34:39] <guest_32> ahh got it thank you so much , I really apriciate it
  15. [21:34:47] <lostcoast> the ISO file system helps too :P
  16. [21:35:14] <guest_32> what is that by the way?
  17. [21:35:16] <lostcoast> and using a program to burn the ISO file if its a dvd/cd
  18. [21:36:22] <camerongray> guest_32: An ISO is an image of a CD, it contains all the information that was contained on the CD in such a way that it can be burned back to a disc and the resulting disc will be identical to the original
  19. [21:36:41] <lostcoast> sardu is a program that allows you to have a few bootavle programs on one device that you can choose which one you want to boot
  20. [21:36:52] <lostcoast> bootable*
  21. [21:37:22] <lostcoast> device = a usb storage device
  22. [21:38:33] <guest_32> but the sardu is not what is booting the device ?
  23. [21:39:05] <lostcoast> ISO is an image of a CD<<no its a bootable file
  24. [21:39:35] <camerongray> guest_32: No, Sardu is a program that configures another bootloader on the device, that bootloader is most likely GRUB or similar
  25. [21:39:48] <lostcoast> ISO are often used on cd/dvd's
  26. [21:40:18] <camerongray> You could do the same job without Sardu but it would take a lot of really complicated configuration, Sardu is a tool that makes it easier to do
  27. [21:40:31] <guest_32> ok
  28. [21:40:53] <lostcoast> camerongray: read the intro http://www.sarducd.it/
  29. [21:40:58] <camerongray> I did :P
  30. [21:41:23] <camerongray> lostcoast: An ISO is a CD image but can preserve bootable information, it doesn't HAVE to be bootable although many are, you can also have an ISO of a music/data CD for example.
  31. [21:41:26] <lostcoast> The multi bootable device can include comprehensive collections of antivirus rescue CD, utilities and popular Linux live distributions. Windows PE can also be included, as well as recovery disks and install media for Windows XP (Professional, Home and 64 Bit), Windows Vista, Windows Seven and Windows Eight.

  34. [21:43:15] <lostcoast> *sigh*
  35. [21:43:24] <camerongray> lostcoast: Yep, I have a very similar setup, really useful, 64gb USB Drive (USB 3.0 so super fast) with loads of diagnostic tools, distros and Windows installers, I no longer need to take a pile of DVDs to fix a PC, just one USB drive
