- To help corroborate Genice's statement, I'll re-share my experiences of when I had my own falling out with Judy back in 2017, originally posted in 2021. It can be viewed here:
- I consider my time with Judy firmly behind me, so there isn't much more to add than what's stated in the link. However, I see Judy engaging in the same manipulation and abuse tactics toward Genice that I personally experienced from her when I went no contact. It is my personal observation that Judy regularly engages in DARVO to anyone who separates from her. For that reason I feel it's important to speak up to showcase a pattern of behavior in defense of Genice.
- While I won't comment on the personal and private nature of Genice and Judy's falling out (beyond the fact that I think it should never have been any of the public's business), I feel strongly in sharing my opinions regarding professional consequences of Judy's accusations toward Genice:
- Judy claiming plagiarism on a project she herself admitted she mentored Genice on should in of itself be disqualifying. The onus to prove that Genice was maliciously stealing from Judy, instead of being openly inspired by what Judy was offering her as a creative guide -- as well as the subsequent material harm toward Judy's work and career -- is extremely steep, and frankly nothing in Judy's document passes that high standard.
- In my view, Judy's claims toward Genice don't have merit purely based on what Judy herself was willing to cite as proof in her document. To be blunt, similar color schemes and common anime character design tropes like ribbon wings are not enough to prove anything beyond shared inspiration or interests.
- As someone who regularly mentors other artists one-on-one and knows how liberally information is offered and shared in the help of supervising or advising on another's projects/goals, the idea of turning around on any of my mentees and accusing them of plagiarism for listening to my instruction would be, in my eyes, nothing short of betrayal and an abuse of power in the teacher/student dynamic.
- To add insult to injury, Genice's project Judy claims is plagiarized has never been published nor publicized, so Judy is effectively accusing plagiarism toward rough story concepts that no one has seen, very much subject to change in creative development. This conclusively means there has been absolutely zero material harm toward Judy's work or career besides what has been self-inflicted by publishing her claims in the first place.
- How anyone took this claim seriously at the premise honestly shocks and disappoints me.
- I feel it's important to highlight these points because in the creative field and our current hostile online climate of genAI, accusations of plagiarism is a very serious one, and it disturbs me how willing Judy's claims of Genice copying her were taken uncritically and, in the process, validated damage to Genice's professional reputation while setting a dangerous community precedent on how an artist creates original work.
- To finish this off:
- I advise to please take Judy's claims of personal harm with critical scrutiny and caution. In posting this statement myself I only wish to support Genice, as she suffered unnecessary material and professional harm due to Judy's actions and statements, as well as push back on this narrative of 'plagiarism' that people seem to accept.
