As they poured into the station, weapons at the ready, speaking to one another in a language that seemed made of a mixture of growls and clicks, she began to hope that there might be a chance she would survive this. Then one of the original things lunged out of the shadows at the new creatures, who shouted and brought their weapons to bear. Those weapons-not guns, not lasers, but a hybrid of the two, incomprehensible and clearly deadly-spoke, and the creature exploded into a mass of chitin and gore. Where the blood splattered on the walls, it began eating away at the metal, corroding and dissolving it like fungus chewing away at the roots of a bramble vine.

Lisa was immediately on her feet, one fist thrust into the air like she had just seen a sports team make the winning play in a competition she'd been following for years.

"Yes!" Lisa froze, feeling ridiculous.
