  4. Lesta's mistakes (thought process)
  5. __
  6.
  7. +Terran Downvale __ I need to look into this one some more. I have likely made a mistake - here's a summary of my thought process when I looked at this.
  8.
  9. My instant reaction was that the dramatic movie-like "crisis" footage had to be from some kind of production (surely we are not going to see several movie cameras *in* a "training drill plus the acting was pretty bad/unrealistic if it's supposed to be "real life").
  10.
  11. Given that it was all in Russian - and how bullsh!t spreads (and that those who spread it don't care) - my first thought to arise after having that reaction was that it's some kind of *"behind the scenes footage from a movie that's being palmed off as a crisis acting drill".*
  12.
  13. That's the thought in my mind. But how the f_kc to find which movie since it was "behind the scenes". I looked down at the comments - at that time there were only a few posted - *and one of them mentioned a movie (Diggers).* So with that I was getting prepared to attribute the footage to that movie.
  14.
  15. In hindsight *the comment would have been making a joke* by saying: "This is really badly acted - just like the movie 'Diggers' - it's footage from that!".
  16.
  17. I did a quick search for the movie "Diggers" and saw it had a terrible rating of about 3/10. That likely meant only a few people saw it in Russia *which made it perfect for palming off as a "training drill" for English audiences.*
  18.
  19. And so my bias had formed and was getting increasingly confirmed.
  20.
  21. I was going to leave it at that but did a quick YouTube search for some "Diggers" press stuff just to see if there were any "behind the scenes" clips that were the same. I skimmed through some videos (everyone complaining about how bad the movie was) *and saw an interview with what looked like the same train and set up* (checking back now I see it's slightly different).
  22.
  23. (Think of when a person shows a photo of someone from an event and then shows a similar photo of someone from a different event - when you *want* to see/believe it's the same person your mind will let it happen.)
  24.
  25. My bias had effectively been confirmed *but I should have kept looking*. After all - if the footage did come from that specific movie it would be found *in* the movie. But it was such a low priority that I just didn't care. Had I cared I would have downloaded the movie and tried to find the scene (and if I didn't then give up on it being from that movie).
  26.
  27. *Next time I check something I won't bother doing so unless I care enough about it to be thorough.*
  28.
  29. Anyway - with all of that on my mind - I then looked at the website linked to from the "training drill" video. That is something I should have done first but I was initially wary of clicking an external website - I should have Googled the domain name to see that it was safe).
  30.
  31. The article read like (dry) satire to me - *at least it could have been given my line of thought.*
  32.
  33. The article started out by saying that readers of the website noticed a commotion at the train station and figured there must have been an incident. *Then it showed the ridiculous photo of the "injured woman" and I assumed it must all be satire.*
  34.
  35. That's what made me believe it was satire. The way it was introduced and then the ridiculous picture of the "injured woman". *There is no way any of this can be genuine*.
  36.
  37. At this point I assumed it was a bullsh!t/satire article - complete with *ridiculous photos* from a movie - *to make fun of that really bad movie.*
  38.
  39. >> I'd found a "plausible explanation" that conformed to my belief bias. <<
  40.
  41. I'd now concluded it was a safe *assumption* that the footage had come from a movie - most likely "Diggers" though there's a lot of Russian train movies involving disasters so it could have come from any of them. Diggers came out in 2016 and so did the article so again that "confirmed my bias".
  42.
  43. At that point I assumed it was another "truther trap" that would later get debunked. More low-hanging fruit to f_kc with the minds of "truthers".
  44.
  45. I'd never heard of the article's website before and the logo made me think of "The Onion". Imagine how a site like the "Onion" would be perceived to audiences in non English countries when some of its articles can easily fool native English speakers who don't outright know it's satire etc.
  46.
  47. So - that is a summary of the thought process as to how I formed the conclusion it was a "truther trap" and that it was "behind the scenes footage" from a movie that was so bad it was being palmed off as "crisis acting" footage and written about like satire.
  48.
  49. I should have just kept quiet but because I see so much bullsh!t getting spread about I felt I had to at least say something. I should have instead just said "what's the proper source for the footage"?
  50.
  51. All in all I'd still say it's footage from some kind of *obscure production* but if it's really supposed to be a genuine "crisis drill" then it's *really bad*. Everyone should be skeptical of it without knowing its source but I likely rejected it for the wrong reasons (by saying it was from a movie I hadn't been able to confirm).
