  1. ‪#‎SSL‬ VPN - THE MOVING PHASE
  2. ------------------------------
  3.
  4. The easy way to save your company from network intruders and ‪#‎security‬ breaches.
  5.
  6. Whether it’s aimed at colleagues in a neighboring office branch or part-time contract workers, never before has extending ‪#‎networking‬ resources to remote users been so critical. Consider this: while the number of mobile workers reached 650 million worldwide in 2004, research firm IDC predicts that, over the next five years, that number will reach 850 million - more than one quarter of the global workforce.
  7.
  8. Up until now, companies have typically relied on ‪#‎IPSec‬ ‪#‎Virtual_Private_Networks‬ (VPNs) to help remote users connect to an internal network. But while IPSec VPNs effectively accommodate site-to-site network connectivity,
  9. many businesses have found the technology to be cost-prohibitive and difficult to deploy. Not to mention the fact that a traditional IPSec VPN requires the installation of specialized client software on end users’ computers. And then there are the security and access concerns. When connected on an IPSec ‪#‎VPN‬, the client computer is able to see and access the entire network – a dangerous prospect if the end-user happens to be an ill-intentioned, fly-by-night contract worker.
  10. Warns Charles Goldberg, director of product management at Juniper Networks, a California-based provider of IP platforms, network traffic management software, VPN and firewall devices: “Now you have this computer that is completely open to your network. The question is, ‘Do you want that single computer to have complete access to your network?’”
  11.
  12. Taking Control of Access
  13. --------------------------------
  14. If the answer is a resounding ‘no,’ then SSL VPN is an ideal alternative. A form of VPN that can be used with a standard Web browser, #SSL VPN does not call for the installation of client software applications. Rather, the technology allows users to connect via a Web connection at the ‪#‎application_layer‬. Because most Web browsers have SSL VPN capabilities built in, the majority of today’s computers are already equipped with the technology needed to connect mobile workers with an internal network.
  15.
  16. Granular access control is one of SSL VPN’s most compelling characteristics. By operating at the session layer, and providing ‪#‎tunnels‬ to specific applications rather than an entire network, SSL VPNs can custom-tailor a remote worker’s access to individual applications, selected URLs, embedded objects and application commands. What’s more, different access rights can be granted to different end-users.
  17. Says ‪#‎Goldberg‬: “With IPSec, it’s as if you’re opening a branch network with a user’s computer – the user gains access to everything. But with SSL VPN, you can limit what users have access to.” All of which makes it easier on a company to comply with corporate security policies and federal regulations.
  18.
  19. The Cost of Getting Connected
  20. -------------------------------------
  21. But SSL VPN doesn’t only promise to save businesses from network intruders and security breaches. It can also save companies money in reduced implementation and management costs. After all, unlike IPSec, SSL VPN eliminates the need for client installation and configuration, and offers network managers centralized policy administration, enforcement and access control.
  22.
  23. As if hassle-free deployment, granular access and reduced costs weren’t enough to sell companies on SSL VPN, there are the countless bells and whistles being offered by IP platform providers. ‪#‎Juniper‬ Networks, for example, provides options such as ‪#‎Secure_Meeting‬. Secure Meeting enables real-time ‪#‎application_sharing‬ for employees, partners, and consultants with just a standard Web browser. For example, if a ‪#‎road_warrior‬ is having trouble installing an application required for an upcoming presentation, a company’s help desk representative can promptly provide remote assistance by remotely controlling their PC without requiring the user to install any software.
  24.
  25. Bells and whistles aside, as more and more employees abandon their cubicles for home offices and hotel rooms, SSL VPN is certain to gain favor as a valuable remote networking solution.
