序奏・第二幕『イ短調の音色』


眼前にそびえる、鈍色の塀に囲まれた巨大な建造物。
建築されてから数十年経っているせいか、その壁はところどころ表面が崩れ、日陰となった部分には濃緑色の苔が生している。
世界有数の名詠式研究基点ーーケルベルく研究機関。
今目の前にそびえる研究所本部を中心に、大陸各所に支部を持つ一大研究組織だ。
Towering before one's eyes,  a dark grey fence surrounded a gigantic sturcture.
Decades had passed since its construction,  here and there the surface had crumbled.  Dark green moss had grown up in the shadowy sections.
This was the place of the world's foremost cardinal recitations research  -- Kelberk Research Facility.
The research headquarters rising up was the heart of the great research organization that possessed branches across the continent.


……どうもここは、堅苦しくて好きになれないんだけどな。
……No matter how I try, I just can't like this strict place.

機関の中枢たる本部施設を眺め、カインツは心中うなだれた。
Gazing at the of the Institute's headquarters at the heart of the organization, Xins hung his head in his heart.

「まったく、先輩も面倒な件を回してくれて」
"Good grief, my senpai gave me a troublesome matter."

包帯で固定した腕を一瞥し、吐息。
Glancing at his arm fixed in a cast, he sighed.

盤ゲームで負けた方がここに行く。そんな賭をしたのがそもそもの間違いだった。……
The person who loses the board game has to go.  It was a mistake to make that bet in the first place.

まったくあの先輩、賭け事になった途端強くなるのはずるいと思うんだけど。
Really that senpai, I think its unfair to get stronger as soon as the betting is done..

「……さて、当の異端科学者はどうしてるかな」
「……Now then, I wonder what I should do with the heretical researcher.」

特殊な錠を施した鞄を右手に携え、カインツは研究所の敷地内へとつま先を向けた。
Carrying a briefcase with a special lock in his right hand, Xins turned his feet towards the inside of the research institute grounds.

警備員の立つ正面扉を越え、受付へと歩を進める。
Crossing the door guarding the front, he advanced to the reception desk.

「あ、ええと」
「Ah, umm」

自分が用件を告げるその前に、受付の女性が営業用の笑顔を浮かべてきた。
Before he could state his business, a business smile rose to the surface of the reception lady.

「カインツ様ですね、本日のご来訪はクラゥス様から響ております」
「You are Xins-sama, right?  I heard from Klaus that you would be visiting today.」

「あれ、そうでしたか」
「Oh is that so?」

さすがは先輩。それくらいの根回しはしてくれたのか。
As expected of senpai.  You made arrangements to this degree for me, didn't you?

「ええ。『左手に包帯を巻いた、へたれな感じの優男が文句を言いながらやってくるはずだから』と、
昨夜私どもにクラウス様から連絡が」
「Yes, 『A man with bandages wrapped around his left hand, an incompetent impression, delicate appearance, and spouting complaints should be coming around today』or so Klaus-sama said last night when he contacted me」

……へたれ。
……Incompetent.

前言撤回。性悪だ、あの人は。
I take back my previous remarks.  That person is ill-natured.

「あ、でも私は、枯れ草色のコートで分かりましたよ」
「Ah, but I realized it was you by your dry grass colored coat!.」

慌てたように女性が続ける。どう答えていいか迷った挙げ句、
カインツは軽く肩をすくめてみせた。
The woman continued in a panic.  He was lost as to what would be a good response.  In the end Xins shrugged his shoulders.

「ところで本日のご用件は、副所長との面会ということでよろしいでしょうか」
「By the way about your business today, is it fine to say that you are here to meet the vice-chief?」

ーー話が伝わっていない。いや、用件そのものは自分で言えということか。
ーーI haven't told you.  No, did I even say I was here for business?

まったく、先輩らしい意地悪な配慮だな。偉大なる祓名民の首領の顔を脳裏に描き、
カインツは悟られない程度に嘆息した。
Geez, It's just like senpai to give malicious consideration.  Imagining the face of the great leader of the Exorcists, Xins sighed unnoticably.

「ーーいえ。今回につきましては副所長としてではなく、
〈イ短調〉としての彼女に用があって参りました」
「ーーNo.  This time I'm not visiting to see her as the vice-chief.  I have business with her as an <A Minor>.

自身滅多に名乗らぬ『称号』を、カインツは受付の女性に告げた。
Xins accounced a rarely used 『Title』to the reception lady.

「彼女に、〈イ短調〉の第十一番が会いに来たとお伝え下さい」
「Please report that <A Minor>'s 11th member is here to meet her.」

＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝


ケルベルク研究所本部、最上階。
Kelberk Research Institute Headquarters,  Top Floor

その最も端の部屋は、他の職員用ルームや研究室と異なり一風変わったものだった。
The room at the furthest end, It was peculiarly differrent from the other office rooms and laboratories.

せいぜい三メートル四方の小部屋。採光用の窓にはカーテンがかけられ、部屋の照明すら切れている。
At best it was a small room 3 meters wide in all directions.  The window for illumination was blocked by a curtain.
薄暗い部屋に置かれた調度品は、部屋の広さに合わせた巨大な机、唯一つ。
There was only one furnishing placed in the gloomy room, a giant desk that spanned the room.

花瓶もなければ絨毯も、本棚すら存在しないのだ。
There wasn't a vase, carpet or even a bookshelf.

これがーーー大陸に広く名を知られるケルベルク研究所本部の、副所長の部屋だった。
This is ーーー The continent famous Kelberk Research Institute Headquarter's Vice-Chief's room.

「……ったく、なんで私がこんなくだらない作業をしなくちゃならない」
「……Geez, why do I have to do this boring work?」

机に山積みとなっている、数百枚という書類。
Stacked on the desk in heaps were hundreds of documents.

その書類に取りかかっているのは一人の若い女性だった。机の右に溜まった、決裁用の書類。
それに自分の名をサインしては、左の山に重ねていく。
Those documents were set about by a single young woman.  Gathered at the right side of the desk were the approved documents.
The signed ones were added to the pile on the right.


「くだらんっ、実にくだらんっ。だからこんな、副所長なんぞという役職につくのは嫌だったんだ！」
Worthless, truly worthless.  This is why I didn't want to take the position of Vice-Chief and the like.


筆を走らせる作業は休めぬまま、その当人がぼやくように吐き捨てる。
椅子に座っていて分かりにくいが、女性はかなり上背があった。
少なく見積もっても男性の平均ほどはある。実際、研究者用の白衣も男性用の物だ。
While resting from racing her pen about, she spat out complaints.
Though it was hard to tell since she was sitting in the chair, the woman was quite tall.
At the very least as tall as the average male.  Her researcher's white robe was practically a man's robe.

切れ長の鋭い瞳に鋭利な顔立ち。濃緑色の髪は肩にかからない程度で切り揃えてある。
総じて、研ぎ澄まされた｛刃｜やいば｝を思わせる印象の女性。
Her eyes were long and sharp.　Dark green hair was cut evenly just before her shoulders.
Generally the woman gave the impression of a sharp blade.

 それがケルベルク研究所副所長ーーーサリナルヴァ・エンドコートだった。
That is Kelberk Research Institute's Vice ChiefーーーSarinarva・Endocoat .

「……いっそこの書類全部燃やして、責任をとるという名目で副所長を辞めるというのも手だな」
「……Might as well burn all these documents.  It's also a way to make the one responsible, the vice-chief, retire.

怪しげな様子でうんうんと頷く。と思いきや、彼女は真面目な顔つきで。
She nodded 'uh-huh' with a suspicious appearance.  Or not, contrary to expectations she had a serious face.

「たしか机の中にマッチがあったな。よし、善は急ーーー」
「If I remember correctly there are matches inside the desk.  All right, strike while the iron is hotーーー」

「だめですよ副所長。全然、善じゃないです」
「That's no good Vice-Chief!  That's entirely no good.」

机の中を漁る女性の目の前で、前触れ無く扉が開いた。
The door had opened without warning on the woman fishing around the inside of the desk.

研究用白衣を着た小柄な女性。
It was a short woman wearing a white researcher's robe.

「む……秘書か」
「Grr……Secretary huh?」

「秘書というか、業務上の名目は研究第一主任なのですが」
「Secretary is it?  Though my job title is the head research manager.」

にこりと、上司の言葉を修正する主任。
その言葉が示すように、小柄な女性の胸元にはその所属と位がはっきりと明示してある。
With a smile she corrected her boss's language.
Pointing out with those words, the short woman explicity stated her rank and position.

「はは、まあ堅いことは言うな。どのみちあまり変わらない。……して、用事はなんだ。
私はこれから、この書類を燃やすという作業を速やかに敢行しなければならないのだが」
「Yeah yeah, well don't say such stuffy things.  Either way there isn't much difference.  ……And, what are you here for?
I'm quite busy from here on, I have to quickly take decisive action to burn these documents.」

「お客様です」
「It's a guest.」

「……あー、どうせどこぞのつまらん研究者だろ。忙しいと伝えてくれ」
「……Ah, it's probably a boring researcher from somewhere.  Tell them I'm busy.」

が。その主任は表情を変えぬまま頭を振るってきた。
But, the manager shook her head without changing her expression .

「〈イ短調〉です」
「It's <A Minor> 」

ぴしりと、サリナルヴァの表情が一変した。今までのどこかとぼけたものから、
冷たく甘いーーー甘い毒を含んだような危険な眼差しへ。
With a snap, Sarinarva's facial expression changed.  From her out of focus expression up until now, it became cold and sweet ーーー like a sweet poison, a dangerous look.


「わざわざこんな味気ない場所に来るとはな。〈イ短調〉のどこの暇人だ？｛首領｜クラウス｝か？
それとも｛大特異点｜ネシリス｝か、｛歌后姫｜シャンテ｝か」
「To think that someone would specifically come to this wretched place.  Which person from <A Minor>?  {The Leader | Klaus }?
Or is it {The Grand Singularity | Nessiris}?  Or {The Song Empress princess | Chante}?

「第十一番が来たとお伝えください、とのことだそうです」
「"Tell her the 11th came" was what he said」

一瞬、ぽかんとした表情でーーしかし次の瞬間、その瞳に悦びの表情が浮き上がった。
One moment she had a flabbergasted expression ーー but the next moment a look of delight floated across her eyes.

「まさか、｛虹色｜カインツ｝！」
「No way, {The Rainbow Color | Xins}!」

「嬉しそうですね」
「You sure seem happy」

「うむ。〈｛イ短調｜アレ｝〉の中でわずかでも愛嬌があるのは、あいつくらいだからな」
「Yes.  Amongst THAT <A Minor> the only one I have any respect for is him」

飛び跳ねるように椅子から立ち上がり、服の｛衣嚢｜ポケット｝に手を入れた格好で歩きだす副所長。
Hopping out of her chair, with one hand in her pocket the vice-chief walked out

「この書類は？　まだ半分以上残っているようですけど」
「What about these documents?  There's over half of them still left」

「いつも通りだ。お前が適当に代筆しておいてくれ」
「Same as usual.  You are suitable so I'll give it to you as my amanuensis」

「予算欲しいしいので、第一課だけ認可して他の部署全部却下でもいいですか？」
「Other than approving the budget, I'll reject all others.  Is that ok?」

「構わんぞ。それだけの見返りが見込める研究ならな」
「I don't care.  That much collatoral damage is within expectation」

「はい」
「Ok」

「良い返事だ。ならば好きにやれ」
「Good answer.  Now then do as you like」

にやりと口の端をつり上げ、サリナルヴァ・エンドコートは一階の客間へと足先を向けた。
通路に、ハイヒールの硬く乾いた音が｛反響｜こだま｝する。
With a board grin that raised the corners of her mouth, Sarinarva・Endocoat turned her feet towards the first floor's guest room.
The hard, dry sound of high heels echoed through the hallway.

……それにしてもあの｛虹色｜カインツ｝。
……Even so, it's {The Rainbow | Xins}.

子犬に蹴られて左手を骨折したという噂は、本当なのかな。
According to the rumors he broke his left hand while kicking a puppy.  I wonder if that is really true?

少々お待ち下さい。すぐ呼んで参りますーー
Please wait a minute.  I'll immediately go call herーー

小柄な女性研究者がそう告げ、もうどれだけ待っただろう。
The short woman said those words, how much more would they make him wait.

「あの人のことだから実験につきっきりなのかな」
「It's that person after all, I wonder if she is in the middle of an experiment.」

既に冷め切っているティーカップ。それに手をつけることもなく、カインツはソファーに背を預けた。
The teacup was already cold.  Without using his hands, Xins sank into the sofa.

コツッーーにわかに、扉越しの通路から足音が響く。
*click*ーーSuddenly, footseps resounded from the hallway past the door.

「……噂をすれば、か」
「……So the rumors were true huh?」

彼女の嗜好だ。研究者としては珍しく、ハイヒールなどという歩きにくい靴を好む。
本人曰く、通路を歩くときに靴音が奏でる音が心地よいらしい。
It was her preference.  Unusual for a researcher, she prefered the hard to walk in high heels.
Apparently the person in question found the footsteps in the hallways to play pleasant sounds.

コツ……コツ、一定のリズムで刻まれた足音が部屋の扉の前で止まり……
*click*……*click*,  The uniform rhythmic footsteps stopped right in front of the doorway.

「いよぉぉぉしっ、実に良いところに来たなカインツ！」
「All riiiiight, you came at a particularly good point Xins!」

やおら、豪勢な造りの扉が蹴り開けられた。
Suddenly, the extravegant door was kicked open.

「今まさに新薬の実験台が欲しかったところだ。暇人のお前ーー」
「Right now I'm in need of an experiment subject for a new medicine.  You're freeーー」

「いやです」
「No way.」

相手が言い終わる前に、カインツはあっさりと言い切った。
Xins quickly asserted before letting the other person finish.

「給料は、はずむぞ？」
「I'll splurge on your wages though?」

「結構です」
「No Thanks」

「……なんと三食・介護付き」
「……What, I'll add 3 meals a day and nursing to it」

「介護付きとか言ってる時点で、やはりお断りします。命の方が大事でず」
「On the subject of adding nursing, as I thought I refuse.  My life is more important」

なんだ、つまらん。
What, that's boring.

ぶつぶつ言いながら、その女性が対面のソファーに腰を下ろした。
While grumbling, the woman sat down on the opposite sofa.

「お久しぶりです。元気そうで」
「It's been a while.  You look healthy.」

「うむ、まだ十六時間しか動いてないからな。あと三十時間は軽い」
「Yea, It's because I don't have to move for 16 hours.  The later 30 hours are easy.」

本気か冗談かと問われれば、間違いなく彼女は本気なのだろう。
If you ask  whether she was serious or joking, of course without a doubt she was serious.

サリナルヴァ・エンドコートーーケルベルク研究所本部の副所長にして、
ケルベルク研究機関の理事を務める若き科学者。
Sarinarva・EndocoatーーIn regards to Kelberk Research Institute Headquarters's vice-chief, she was the young scientist on Kelberk Research Facility's board of directors.


狂気とも言える研究欲を誇り、同業の研究者からも変人という｛称号｜レッテル｝を貼られた女性だ。
Prideful of her research cravings that could be called madness, her fellow researchers stuck her with the label of eccentric.


自身の研究に打ち込むあまり水すら飲まず、気づけば脱水症状だったなどは日常茶飯事。
Devoting herself to research and forgetting to drink water to the point of dehydration was an everyday occurance.

真夜中の三時であろうと四時であろうと、新たな実験手法を思いつけば片っ端から助手を叩き起こして回る迷惑人という一面もある。
You could also say she was a troublesome person who if she thought up a new experiment in the dead of night though it was 3 or 4 am she would wake up all her assistants.

気分屋かつ、誰にも自分の本心を知らさないこと、集団での研究には本来馴染まない。
A moody person who no one understand's her true feelings and who isn't familiar with the group's research.
だがそれを踏まえてなお研究所の副所長を任されているのは、純粋に、彼女が並外れて優秀だということの裏付けでもある。
But the woman who was the research institute's vice-chief had indcredibly excellent backing.


「研究もいいですが、身体も気遣ってくださいね」
「Research is fine and all but, please take care of your body too」

「心配いらん。毎日一回は食事も摂るよう心がけてるさ」
「No need to worry.  I make sure to take in one meal a day」


言って、研究服の胸ポケットから栄養剤を取り出す彼女。おそらくはそれが、彼女の一番まともな「一回分の食事」なのだろう。
As she said that she took out a nutrient bar out of her breast pocket.  Most likely it was her "daily meal".


「それにしても、まさかお前が来るとは思わなかったぞ。<イ短調>の会合で一番出席率	の悪いお前がな」
「In any case, I never thought you would have come here.  You with the <A Minor> assembly's worst attendence rate.」

にやにやと、からかい混じりの視線で告げてくるサリナルヴァ。         ・
Sarinarva told him with a wide grin and a teasing look in her eyes.

「たまには働けと、先輩にどやされまして」
「Once in a while I work, and senpai shouted at me」

苦笑の面持ちのまま、カインツはソファーの背から身を起こした。
With a bitter smile on his face, Xins rose up from the back of the sofa.

<イ短調>、場合によっては〈イ短調十一旋律〉。
<A Minor>,  in any case <A Minor's 11th Melody>.

わずか十一人から成る会合。会合の存在自体が滅多に表舞台に出ないため、それを知る者は少ない。
しかしその十一人の誰もが皆、特定の分野における希代の｛専門家｜スペシャリスト｝であり、
一人一人の発言が、一つの巨大機関と同等以上の影響力を有している。
It was an assembly with barely 11 members.  In order for the assembly's existence to rarely come to the surface, the number of people who knew about it was few.
However every one of those 11 people were rare specialists in a specific realm.
Each one's statements possessed clout exceeding the giant factions.

稀薄とも言える知名度と対照的に、その道の名詠士や学者たちからは例外なく畏れられる、
至高とも言うべき超越者の会だ。
In contrast with their very weak degree of fame, without exception reciters and scholars on the same path were fearful of the trancendental meeting of those called the supreme (elite? at the pinnacle?).

最初は、誰もがそんな集団の形成は実現不可能だと考えていた。
その｛名簿｜リスト｝に名の挙がった人員はその多くが、
優秀すぎるが故に組織という縛りを嫌っていたかだ。
At first everyone thought that the formation of such a group was impossible.
Because though there were many who could be on that list, who among the exceedingly superior would allow themselves to be tied to an organization?

その空言を実現したのが祓名民の首領たるクラウス・ユン・ジルシュヴェッサー。
That one who realized that impossibility was the Exorcist's leader Klaus Yung Gillshuvesher.

もともとその会合に名前は無い。だがそれを知る側の者からは、異端者の｛長｜ちょう｝ーー転じ、
音楽の調性の一つである<イ短調>と称される。あまりにその通り名が有名になったため、
自分たちもその非公式な呼び名を使うようになったのだ。
Originally the assembly had no name.  But from those who knew about it, the heretical leader altered it to be called one of the music scales <A Minor>.
In order for it not to become a very well known name, they called it by an informal name.

「……ボクも本当は気がすすまなかったのですが。理由が二つありまして」
「……I also was really reluctant to but, there are two reasons I did」

「ほう？」
「Oh?」

「名目上の方から言いますね。会合に一番出席率の悪いボクが誘いに来たなら、
二番目に出席率の悪いあなたも重い腰を上げざるを得ないだろうと」
「I'll say the reason on paper.  If I with the assembly's worst attendance record came, you with the second worst attendance record would probably not get your lazy butt in gear.」

〈イ短調〉第九番ーサリナルヴァ・エンドコート。
<A Minor> 7th ーー Sarinarva・Endocoat.

名詠式の｛触媒｜カタリスト｝における新理論、論文を続けざまに発表し、そのどれもが斬新かつ理論的。
She published thesis papers one after another for new thoeries on recitation catalysts.  Every single one of them is an original theory.

その実力を評価したクラウスによって、一年半前に〈イ短調〉の一員となった。
Highly valued by Klaus for her ability, she was made a member of <A Minor> one and a half years ago.

「ははっ、違いない。クラウスらしい発想だな」
「Yeah, no mistake.  That's a very Klaus way of thinking.」

ひとしきり笑い声を上げたものの、彼女の笑顔は一瞬だけだった。
A laughing voice rose for some time, the woman smiled for only a moment.

「だがまあ、そんなことはどうでもいい。早いところ本題を聞かせてもらおうか」
「But well, that doesn't really matter.  Hurry up and let me hear the main point.」

「……これでずよ」
「It's this.」

自分と彼女を挟むように置かれたテーブルへと、カインツは鞄を持ち上げた。
黒い獣皮を加工した、頑丈な容器。その口の部分には金属製の錠が取りつけてある。
Xins placed his briefcase on the table between them.
It was a sturdy container made of black leather.  A metal lock was installed over it's opening.

「随分とまた物々しいな。中身は何だ」
「Tha's pretty strict security.  What are the contents?」

「ケルベルクの支部が極秘裏に造った、とある人工触媒。と言ったら？」
「What if I said it's an artificial catalyst that the Kelberk branch made in the strictest secrecy?」

すっ、と彼女の目つきが鋭さを増した。
With an inhale the look in the woman's eyes increased in sharpness.

「ーー話は聞いている。〈孵石〉などという、問答無用の欠陥品だとな」
「ーーI'll listen to your story.  <{Egg| Incubation Gem}>, without argument it's a defective product」

「ええ。しかしどうも、話はそれほど単純というわけでもないようです」
「Yes.  But somehow it doesn't seem to be that that simple of a story either.」

目線で示し、鞄を開ける。
Revealing with his gaze, he opened the briefcase.

赤・青・黄・緑・白。全部で五つ。輝く宝石にも似た、楕円形をした｛触媒｜カタリスト｝。
Red・Blue・Yellow・Green・White.  5 of them in all, resembling sparkling jewels, eliptical shaped catalysts.

「触っても平気か」
「Is it okay to touch them?」

「ええ、既に一度作動済みですし」
「Yes, they have already been used once」

無造作に、手元にあった白の〈孵石〉を掴む彼女。
Carelessly the woman grabbed the white <{Egg | Incubation Jewel}>

カラン・乾いた音が客間に響いた。
*Rattle* a dry sound echoed in the parlor.

「……中に、｛更に｜さらに｝何かが入っているようだな」
「……Moreover it seems that something is contained inside.」

「ええ。どうやらそっちの方が本当の触媒のようですね。外殻はあくまで、
その触媒の反応促進のためと思われます。単刀直入に言いますと、
これを細部まで分析して欲しいんです」
「That's right.  Somehow or other it seems that side is the real calatalyst doesn't it.  I think the shell's purpose after all is to accelerate the catalyst's reaction.  I'll get right to the point, I want a detailed analysis of this thing.

「興味もあるからな。分かった、これについては私の方で預かろう。調査結果が出次第、各機関に報告する」
「I have an interest in this as well.  I understand, as far as this is concerned leave it to me.  As soon as the results are done I'll report it to every organization」


<孵石>を睨みつけたまま彼女が頷く。
While staring at the <{Egg|Incubation Jewel}> the woman nodded.

「お願いします。しかし問題はもう一つ」
「Please do.  However there is one more problem.」

むしろ、今回の件はこちらが本論だ。
Rather, this matter is the main one.

「人を石化させる謎の名詠について、だろう」
「The mysterious reciter who petrified people, right?」

「ご存じでしたか？」
「You knew about it?」

思わず、カインツは方眉をつり上げた。自分もつい数日前、とある情報筋からその報せを受けて愕然としたばかりだった。
Unintentionally, Xins raised an eyebrow.  It was only just a few days before that he had received the terrifying report from certain sources.


「うちの支部が丸々襲われたということだからさすがにな。トレミア・アカデミーの教師、
それに数人の学生でひとまずの鎮圧に成功したらしいが。……まったく、
こうも立て続けに問題が起きるとはな」
「Because our branch was completely attacked it's as you'd expect.  It appears that Tremia Academy's teachers and moreover several students succeeding in subjugating it.  Good grief, this also is a continuation of the problems that have been occuring.」

「And the story is that mysterious reciter also made the grey <{Egg | Incubation Gem}>」

「ああ。今はそれも、トレミア・アカデミーが管理しているらしい」
「Yeah.  In addition to that it seems that Tremia Academy is also managing that right now.」

「ーー本題に入りましょう」
「ーーLet's get to the real issue at hand」

気持ち一つ、カインツは声の音量を低く抑えた。
Xins lowered his voice.

視線を机上の触媒から彼女へと。
Looking from the catalysts on the table to the woman.

「その支部での事件を解決した者の中に、先輩の一人娘がいたそうです」
「Amongst the ones who settled this affair at the branch was senpai's only daughter.」

「ああ、面識はある。父親に似た、負けん気の強い娘だ」
「Yeah, I'm acquainted with her.  The daughter resembles her father with her strong competetive spirit.」

エイダ・ユン・ジルシュヴェッサー。
Ada Yung Gillshuvesher.

その少女が告げた事実は、虹色名詠士たるカインツ、
祓名民の首領たるクラウスをして驚愕に値する内容だった。
The facts that the Exorcist's Chief Klaus told the Rainbow Color Reciter Xins about that girl's accomplishments were astonishing.

人を一瞬に石化させるという、異常な灰色の名詠生物。それを詠び出す奇怪な〈讃来歌〉。
そして、今までに報告された種とまるで類を異にする、銀色の｛刃｜やいば｝を翳す真精。
The unusual recited creatures were said to petrify people in an instant.  The weird <{Song of Praise | Oratorio}> that called them out.
And the seed that was recently reported to be in a different family altogether, the True Spirit wielding the silver swords.

「研究所一つを丸々落としてみせる凶悪な名詠。攻撃的な名詠生物に、その真精。
その犯人は未だ捕まらず、その目的すら謎。なにぶん謎が多いこの事件、
調査委員会を設立したはいいものの八方塞がり。そこで、その委員から先輩に依頼がありまして」
「The fiendish recitation that completely fell one laboratory.   The agressive recited creatures and True Spirit.
The culprit hasn't been caught, and his purpose is a mystory.   Anyhow there are many mysteries with this incident.
The investigation committee that was formed is blocked from anything good.  Therefore there is a request from one of those committee members for senpai」

The whereabouts of the manufacturer of the <{Egg| Incubation Gem}>, the identity of the mysterious recitation and its singer, these are the targets of the investigation along with capturing him.

そして、クラウスはその依頼を受けた。
And to accept Klaus's request.

「……普段ならなおざりにするんだが、今回ばかりはそうもいかないか」
「……Normally I'd disregard such a thing, but this time only I really can't, huh?」

「集まる日時は十日後。場所は先輩の邸を使うとのことです」
「The meeting is in 10 days.  The meeting place is at senpai's estate.」

「委細承知した。その間に、私もひとまず自分の責務を果たす」
「Understood.  In the meantime I need to perform my duties」

ゆるりと、反動をつけて彼女が椅子から立ち上がる。
Leisurely the woman rose from her seat.

「と、言いますと」
「Which means?」

「トレミア・アカデミーへ向かう。支部で目撃された灰色の〈孵石〉は先方で管理しているんだろう？
現物をまずこの目で見なければ話にならん。それに五色の〈孵石〉の方も、
そろそろ事後報告書がトレミア側で作成されている頃だ。それについても目を通しておく」
「I'm headed to Tremia・Academy.   The ones who witnessed the grey <{Egg | Incubation Jewel}> are under their control aren't they?
Without first seeing the goods there would be no conversation.  Moreover there are 5 colors of <{Egg | Incubation Jewel}> as well, it's about time Tremia's side creates a post facto report.  I also want to look through the place.

「珍しく協力的ですね」
「That's unusually cooperative of you.」

「研究者としても興味のある事例だからな。お前も来るか？」
「This is a case that interestes me as a researcher.  Are you also coming with me?」

「……そうですね」
「……Yes let's see」

トレミア・アカデミー。自分にとっては少なからぬ因縁のある場所だ。あの日あの時、
自分の中で大切な約束が一つ果たされた。けれど、全てが決着したわけではない。
あの夜色の少年とも、今一度話したいことがある.
Tremia Academy.  As for himself it's a place with more than a few connections.  That day, that time, he fulfilled a precious promise within himself.  However, it wasn't entirely concluded.  He wanted to have another conversation with that night color boy.

 だがーー内心の葛藤を抑え、カインツは首を横にふった。
ButーーHis inner thoughts were conflicted and held him back.  Xins shook his head sideways.

「是非、と言いたいところなんですが。ボクも事前に調ベておきたいものがありますので」
「Certainly.  Or so I'd like to say but, I also have a place to investigate beforehand.」

まだあの少年と会う時期ではない。
It wasn't yet time to meet with that boy.

いずれ、また自然と巡り会う時が来る。
Sooner or later a time where they naturally meet by chance will come.

「それにこの怪我では、遠出は少々こたえますしね」
「That and it would be a little hard for me to go far with these wounds.」

これ見よがしに、包帯の巻かれた腕を持ち上げる。
He raised his arm wrapped in bandages for show.

「ああ、何だっけ。子犬に蹴られて骨を折ったと聞いたが」
「Yeah, what was it again, I heard that you broke a bone while kicking a puppy though」

……子犬。
Puppy...

「どれだけへたれなんですか、ボクは」
「To what level are you lowering me to.」

「あれ、私は｛歌后姫｜シャンテ｝からそう聞いたぞ？」
「Huh?  I heard it from {The Song Empress Princess | Chante } though?」

「ま、あいつが噂好きの誇張好きなのは私も同感だがな」
「Well, I also agree that she loves exaggerated rumors.」

くくっ、と低い笑い声をサリナルヴァが洩らす。
A quiet laughing voice leaked out of Sarinarva.

「だが喜べカインツ、朗報だ。なんとつい数日前だ、
私はとうとう骨折を一日で治す薬の精製に成功したぞ！」
「But rejoice Xins, I have good news.  Just a few days ago I finally succeeded in refining a medicine that can heal a bone fracture in one day!」

ばさりと研究服をなびかせ、高らかに宣言する変人。
Her cloths flew with a thud as the oddball declared this loudly.

「……なんですか、そのあからさまに怪しい秘薬」
「……What's with that blatantly shady secret medicine」

「はっはっは。しかも、塗り薬じゃなく飲み薬」
「Haahaaha.  Moreover its not an ointment but a oral medicine」

飲み薬で、どうやって骨折を治すと。
How exactly is it going to heal a bone fracture as an oral medicine .

「そこまでいくと、もはや何がどう危険か指摘する気もなくなりますね」
「Since you've said that much, I no longer have any intent to find out just how dangerous it is.」

「……そうか。まあそれなら無理にとは言わんさ」
「……Is that so?  Well in that case I can't be unreasonable」

気を悪くした様子もなく、あっさりと彼女は身を引いた、 おや、珍しく素直だな。などと思ったら、
この研究者相手にはやっていけない。
Without an indication of feeling bad, the woman quickly pulled herself back.  What's this?  She's unusually meek.  To think something like that with this researcher companion must never be done.

「ところでカインツ、紅茶飲まないのか。せっかくお前の好きなレモンティーを用意させたのに」
「By the way Xins, would you like to drink some tea?  I especially prepared the lemon tea that you are fond of.」

テーブルに置かれたカップを目線で促す彼女。
The woman guestured towards the cups left on the table with her eyes.

それを、カインツは丁重に断った。
Xins politely refused.

「ええ。以前誰かさんお手製のクッキーに、『一日でクラウスを越えられる筋肉増強剤』
なる物が混入していたことがありまして」
「No.  Because previously a certain someone's handmade cookies had a 『Surpass Klaus in a day muscle augmenting drug』 mixed in.」

「ほう、よく覚えているじゃないか」
「Oh,  you have a good memory don't you?」

「あの後、全身の寒気とふるえで三日ほど寝込みましたからね。今回も例の『一日で骨折が治る薬』
とやらが混入してないかと思って」
「It's because after that I spent 3 days sick in bed with my entire body shivering from chills.   This time also I thought 'maybe that 『heal bone fractures in a single day medicine』was mixed in?'」

「見事……見事だカインツ、よくぞそこまで見破った」
「Magnificent......  Magnificent Xins. how wonderfully you've seen through it.」

腕組みし、なぜか満足げに頷く狂科学者。
Why was this mad scientist folding her arms and nodding contendedly.

……ほうら、やっぱり。
……See, as expected.

「ボク、もう帰っていいですか。身の危険を感じるので」
「Is fine for me to leave already?  I'm sensing danger to my body after all」

呆れ半分に椅子から立ち上がる。が、それを押しとどめるように。
Half in schock she rose from her seat.  But, it was as if to stop him.

「ーー身の危険、か」
「danger to your body, huh?」

にわかに、女性の声音に硬さが戻った。
Suddenly the hardness returned to the woman's voice.

「なあカインツ。現在調査中ではあるが」
「Say Xins.  The current investigation exists but」

コツ、小さな靴音を伴って彼女が部屋の窓へと向かう。自分に背を向け、
彼女は部屋の外に広がる空をじっと見つめていた。
Slowly, accompanied by small sounds of footsteps, the woman faced the room's window.  He turned his back towards her as she stared at the spacious sky outside the room.

 そのまま、数秒の沈黙を隔て。
Just like that, several moments of silence passed.

With his back facing herーー

「灰色名詠とやら、有効なのは『｛Arzus｜白｝』による反唱という報告を受けている」
「The unconfirmed Grey Color Recitation, I received a report that it was the {Arzus | White} reverse song that was effective.」

口早に、彼女はそう告げてきた。
Rapidly talking, she told him that.

「お前の実力は知っているが……ゆめゆめ油断するなよ」
「I know your strength but……You can't even be a little careless you know.」

背を向けたまま手を振ってくる女性研究者。彼女に向かい、カインツは小さく一礼した。
While his back was turned her hand waved.  Facing her, Xins gave a small bow.

「お気遣い感謝します。それでは、十日後」
「I am thankful for your concern.  Well then, It's 10 days from now」

「ああ。お互い、気をつけるとしよう」
「Yeah.  You as well, take care of yourself」
