  1. Before I get the chance to start another very engaging conversation with Ayako, I hear a knock at the door.
  2.
  3. I get up from my spot on the carpet, and walk to the door, looking through the peephole. The thin frames of Kenji's large glasses are clearly visible. I take a step back and open the door.
  4.
  5. Without hesitation, Kenji enters and half-shoves past me, dropping a few grocery bags on the floor near the jacket-cloaked bottle of alcohol. As I close the door, he turns to me.
  6.
  7. Kenji
  8. "Shit, what the hell, man? You didn't lock the door?"
  9.
  10. A familiar manic grimace crosses his face.
  11.
  12. Kenji
  13. "Grahh!! Are you are you just trying to let them in!?"
  14.
  15. Of course, Kenji didn't tell me to lock the door, though I suppose I should've thought of it, knowing that his management of his locks is standard procedure. I respond without turning to him.
  16.
  17. Hisao
  18. "Alright, I'm sorry about that. I won't forget again."
  19.
  20. My eyes are currently fixed on the locks in question. A few simple hinge fasteners, one with a chain, a couple of them with a loose padlock attached to them. Without trying to make any sense of the pattern, I proceed to close and secure each one carefully.
  21.
  22. Ayako
  23. "So, what's in the bags?"
  24.
  25. Kenji
  26. "Just general stuff. Food, packing materials, you know."
  27.
  28. "This might be a rough night, I gotta be prepared for anything."
  29.
  30. Ayako's eyes widen.
  31.
  32. Ayako
  33. "You got snacks?"
  34.
  35. "Can I have a snack?"
  36.
  37. Kenji
  38. "Yeah, sure."
  39.
  40. As I turn back to face them, it strikes me as interesting that Kenji has someone else he can be honest to, albeit his seemingly aloof little sister. I'm not sure how close they are, but there's definitely some sort of bond there.
  41.
  42. In a way, that's how I feel about Kenji, as well.
  43.
  44. I watch as Kenji reaches into a bag and pulls out a box, opening it and taking out a wrapped sweet roll, tossing it to her. It hits her in the side and falls to the floor. She hops off the bed and picks it up.
  45.
  46. Ayako
  47. "Thanks."
  48.
  49. "You're late though, Kenji."
  50.
  51. "I need to go back home."
  52.
  53. Kenji pulls back the sleeve on his shirt and glances at his watch. I amusedly notice the alarm clock on the nightstand half a foot away from him. Just a few minutes past 4 in the afternoon.
  54.
  55. Kenji
  56. "Oh, yeah. Alright Hisao, I'm gonna go escort her. Hang out in here for a bit."
  57.
  58. Hisao
  59. "Should I come along? My legs could use some stretching."
  60.
  61. Kenji
  62. "No, I should do it myself. Go take a walk on your own if you need a stretch."
  63.
  64. I nod, and then look to Ayako, who's placing her game device into her backpack and zipping it up.
  65.
  66. Hisao
  67. "Alright then, it was nice to meet you, Ayako."
  68.
  69. Ayako cocks her head to me, then gets up and walks towards me. She wraps an arm around my waist.
  70.
  71. Ayako
  72. "Okay, see ya, Hisao."
  73.
  74. She relinquishes the partial hug quickly and returns to her backpack, picking it up. Maybe she's a little friendlier than I thought. She's nothing like Kenji, that's for sure, despite them being siblings.
  75.
  76. After another minute, I end up undoing all the locks that I just closed a minute ago, signaling the padlocks to Kenji. He quickly comes over and takes a ring of keys out of his pocket, deftly unlocking each padlock.
  77.
  78. The three of us file out. I wave to Kenji, but he's already walking briskly down the hall, his sister's hand in his. I guess even Kenji doesn't like to be late for something.
  79.
  80. With nothing else to do, I stretch my arms wide and walk down the hall as well, at a relaxed pace.
  81.
  82. I exit the dorm hall and walk down the stairs, taking in the warmth of the afternoon sun, the smell of fresh-cut grass pervading amongst the fresh air.
  83.
  84. I'm not the only one taking it in. Throughout the wide lawn situated in the middle of all the buildings, students of all types are resting, relaxing, enjoying a picnic or simply chatting amongst their group of friends.
  85.
  86. This Sunday afternoon seems a lot different from the one in the previous week, but in the end, it looks like I'll be doing the same thing anyway.
  87.
  88. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  89.
  90. After about another half an hour of uneventfully walking around the campus, I spot Kenji coming around a corner of the school hall, presumably from a back entrance.
  91.
  92. I approach him and wave.
  93.
  94. Hisao
  95. "Hey, Kenji."
  96.
  97. He looks in my direction, nods, and strolls over.
  98.
  99. Kenji
  100. "Still walkin', eh?"
  101.
  102. "Well, come on, let's get back to the room. This night is ours."
  103.
  104. Without argument, I walk with him back to the dorm rooms, and back to the room that he calls his, set at the end of the hallway.
  105.
  106. We enter, and he immediately goes toward the corner of the room, pulling the bottle of liquor up and proceeding to his bed, sitting down near the corner."
  107.
  108. As he works the top open, he looks up at me.
  109.
  110. Kenji
  111. "You comin'?"
  112.
  113. I nod, and take my place on the bed, as well.
  114.
  115. Hisao
  116. "So, what are we drinking this time? More whiskey?"
  117.
  118. Kenji
  119. "Nah man, it's vodka this time. Imported straight from Russia."
  120.
  121. "I hear it's even harsher than whiskey. Should be good, right?"
  122.
  123. I'm already doubting the notion of actually doing this, but instead, I shrug.
  124.
  125. Hisao
  126. "I guess so. You got first sip?"
  127.
  128. Kenji
  129. "You know it."
  130.
  131. With that, he lifts and tilts the bottle, letting the deceptively clear liquid pour into his mouth.
  132.
  133. A second later, he sputters and gags, spraying alcohol in a wide radius in front of him.
  134.
  135. He wipes his mouth with his sleeve, and looks at me, motioning the bottle to my lap.
  136.
  137. Kenji
  138. "Dude, you gotta try this."
  139.
  140. -----------------------------------------------------
  141.
  142. Drinking, getting drunk, time forgetting your very presence. Drink after drink. An hour or two, or six, consisting of Kenji rambling, my own self complaining about the vodka, it doesn't matter.
  143.
  144. The bottle's now a little more than half empty.
  145.
  146. Hisao
  147. "Ugh... Isn't that enough?"
  148.
  149. Kenji
  150. "Enough? Enough!? You don't know the meaning, man. This continues until the bottle is empty."
  151.
  152. There goes my attempts to hold myself back tonight.
  153.
  154. But, how much stronger can Kenji be than I? I grab the bottle from him and take another swig.
  155.
  156. Hisao
  157. "Here, then."
  158.
  159. Kenji
  160. "Damn, dude, it's not a competition, shit."
  161.
  162. Hisao
  163. "Didn't mean it like that, I'm just takin' my turn."
  164.
  165. Kenji
  166. "Alright alright."
  167.
  168. "So, you've been around for a while, how're you fightin' the feminists?"
  169.
  170. Hisao
  171. "What made you think I was?"
  172.
  173. Kenji
  174. "Well shit man, you seem pretty in support for the cause."
  175.
  176. Hisao
  177. "I guess I still don't understand, I'll admit."
  178.
  179. Kenji
  180. "Shit. Well, I don't blame you, Hisao, man. There's a lot to keep track of."
  181.
  182. "Hell, even I don't want to recall anything right now."
  183.
  184. A week of fair devotion to school, followed by drinking my face off, followed by another week, followed by drinking my face off. That's what I've has to keep track of.
  185.
  186. Hisao
  187. "We have a happy night tonight, then?"
  188.
  189. Kenji
  190. "No. Not happy. Always on-guard, Hisao. But uh, yeah, do celebrate the night."
  191.
  192. "Neither of us are dead, we can celebrate to that."
  193.
  194. A fair compromise. Soon after he says that, Kenji takes the bottle from me and drinks a swig of his own.
  195.
  196. Hisao
  197. "So uh, what was that about hell? With your sister?"
  198.
  199. Kenji
  200. "Oh, yeah, man. Good on you for enduring that."
  201.
  202. Hisao
  203. "She didn't seem so bad."
  204.
  205. Kenji starts to laugh aloud.
  206.
  207. Kenji
  208. "Really? She got you, man."
  209.
  210. Hisao
  211. "What?"
  212.
  213. Kenji rubs his chin thoughtfully.
  214.
  215. Kenji
  216. "Hmm... you got your wallet?"
  217.
  218. I shrug and reach into my pocket, not sure what he's getting at.
  219.
  220. It's not there.
  221.
  222. Hiaso
  223. "What!? Where'd it go!?"
  224.
  225. Kenji
  226. "Ahahahaha! I knew it! The old wallet trick. I told you man, she got you."
  227.
  228. I suddenly recall her awkward hug.
  229.
  230. Hisao
  231. "She stole it?"
  232.
  233. "What the hell. I kind of need that."
  234.
  235. "Could you ask her to give it back?"
  236.
  237. Kenji
  238. "Maybe. All the money will be gone though."
  239.
  240. Hisao
  241. "Shouldn't she get in trouble for this sort of thing?"
  242.
  243. Kenji
  244. "Not really. It's not important, man. Shit, just take another drink already."
  245.
  246. He's already nudging the bottle against my side. I take it and drink more down. The alcohol goes down a little easier now, the burning in my throat almost soothing in it's own way.
  247.
  248. The passage of time continues unmarked, eventually I'm drawn to another statement that comes out of Kenji.
  249.
  250. Kenji
  251. "This shit's boring. We need to go somewhere."
  252.
  253. I'm reminded again of his sister, for a moment.
  254.
  255. Hisao
  256. "What do you mean? Where could we go?"
  257.
  258. Kenji
  259. "I dunno man. Something more than this, though. Let's go."
  260.
  261. Kenji proceeds to quickly re-cap the half-empty bottle and gets up, stumbling to a backpack, placing the bottle into it.
  262.
  263. I get up, almost losing my balance.
  264.
  265. I can feel my heartbeat against my chest, apparently my little friend doesn't appreciate my plans for the evening.
  266.
  267. Before I know it, Kenji and I are wandering the school grounds, the sun long since fallen and the surrounding cloaked in a bluish darkness.
  268.
  269. We end up at a gate somewhere behind the school grounds. Kenji opens the moss-laden door and we walk through.
  270.
  271. Dirt paths, trees, fallen leaves, various growth on the ground around me. We're wandering around wilderness, my mind not bothering to trace the path. Kenji seems to know where he's going, or maybe he's just going for the sake of going.
  272.
  273. Soon enough, he sits down in front of a tree.
  274.
  275. Kenji
  276. "Alright, this should be cool for hangin' out."
  277.
  278. I take a seat next to him on the dirt.
  279.
  280. Hisao
  281. "What, no trolling women this time?"
  282.
  283. Kenji
  284. "Nah, man. I think this is cool enough. Just us two bros, drinkin' and spittin' the shit."
  285.
  286. He's already gotten the bottle out of his backpack, opening it and dumping another portion out of it.
  287.
  288. Hisao
  289. "That sounds good. Yeah, I think I li-"
  290.
  291. I'm interrupted by a rustling sound coming from further up the path. Kenji frantically puts the bottle back into the backpack.
  292.
  293. The rustling draws closer. Eventually, I make out auburn red hair. A couple of steps later, I fully recognize the figure. Rin.
  294.
  295. Rin
  296. "Huh...? Is that you, Hisao?"
  297.
  298. Hisao
  299. "Oh, uh... hi, Rin."
  300.
  301. Rin
  302. "Am I dreaming?"
  303.
  304. "How are you here?"
  305.
  306. Hisao
  307. "Huh?"
  308.
  309. Rin's eyelids lower.
  310.
  311. Rin
  312. "Seems unusual, is all."
  313.
  314. Hisao
  315. "I could say the same. Why are you out here?"
  316.
  317. Rin's mouth thins, she pauses for a few moments before answering.
  318.
  319. Rin
  320. "No reason. I guess."
  321.
  322. Kenji
  323. "Uhh... Rin? I've seen you. You were the one painting the mural in front of the dorms, right?"
  324.
  325. Rin suddenly looks over at Kenji, unmoved by his presence.
  326.
  327. Rin
  328. "Yeah, that was me. Mostly."
  329.
  330. Kenji
  331. "That shit was awesome. It's like, the struggle of mankind against a vile force. A force that submits all men into contortion and discoloring."
  332.
  333. Rin
  334. "Uh... yeah. I guess that's kind of what it is."
  335.
  336. "I'm glad you like it."
  337.
  338. Kenji
  339. "Shit, I wish it'd stay up for the whole year. Damn feminists might have something to say about it, though."
  340.
  341. Rin tilts her head, her expression still unchanged.
  342.
  343. Rin
  344. "What? Feminists?"
  345.
  346. Kenji
  347. "Ah, uh, never mind."
  348.
  349. Rin
  350. "Alright, my mind is never, then."
  351.
  352. An awkward silence, the type that could only be the result of a conversation with Rin, hangs for a few moments.
  353.
  354. Kenji
  355. "Hey, wanna sit down?"
  356.
  357. Kenji pats the dirt next to him. Rin just shrugs in a 'why not' sort of way and sits down.
  358.
  359. Hisao
  360. "Well, there goes our manliness."
  361.
  362. Kenji
  363. "It's fine, man."
  364.
  365. Kenji pats me once on the shoulder and makes a shrug himself.
  366.
  367. I pass the whole thing off as another possible 'trolling women' attempt by him.
  368.
  369. Kenji
  370. "Rin, was it? The name's Kenji."
  371.
  372. "You got a thing for nature? Or are you just crazy?"
  373.
  374. Rin
  375. "Umm..."
  376.
  377. "Both."
  378.
  379. Kenji
  380. "Good answer."
  381.
  382. Kenji fingers at his backpack zipper for a moment, and then pulls out the bottle. Rin's eyes open wide.
  383.
  384. Rin
  385. "That's... alcohol?"
  386.
  387. Kenji
  388. "That's right. Only the best for Hisao and I. Want some?"
  389.
  390. Rin
  391. "Yeah... sure."
  392.
  393. Kenji shoves the bottle to her front.
  394.
  395. Rin
  396. "Umm..."
  397.
  398. Kenji
  399. "Oh, shit, sorry."
  400.
  401. Kenji motions the bottle up slowly. Rin takes the hint and opens her mouth. Kenji proceeds to pour what looks like a significant amount of alcohol past her lips.
  402.
  403. Surprisingly, she doesn't cough and sputter. She simply closes her mouth and makes a loud gulp. She closes her eyes.
  404.
  405. Rin
  406. "Hmmm... burns like fire."
  407.
  408. The hours proceed on, Kenji doing his usual drill of ranting to a new person, the alcohol in him no doubt magnifying it. Rin doesn't respond for the most part, simply sitting still and listening, either being a willing audience or a completely aloof one.
  409.
  410. That doesn't last forever. It would seem that even Rin isn't unchanged by the effects of alcohol."
  411.
  412. Kenji
  413. "When you fight, you just watch your back. That's the way."
  414.
  415. Rin
  416. "But you can't watch your own back! It's not possible. I tried."
  417.
  418. Rin contorts herself to the side in demonstration.
  419.
  420. Rin
  421. "You speak a lot, Kenji, and it's confusing. I can't figure you out."
  422.
  423. Hisao
  424. "It's probably best not to try."
  425.
  426. Kenji
  427. "See, Hisao's got the right idea."
  428.
  429. Rin
  430. "It's okay, then. You're a mystery. I like mysteries."
  431.
  432. Rin flashes a large, uncharacteristic smile to Kenji
  433.
  434. Rin
  435. "Like uhh..."
  436.
  437. "Uhh..."
  438.
  439. "... I can't think of it. It's another mystery!"
  440.
  441. Rin laughs aloud, as if she had said some sort of joke.
  442.
  443. Another hour or two pass.
  444.
  445. The bottle's almost empty. Kenji passes it to Rin and she immediately grabs the top of the bottle with her teeth, tilting her head back and letting most of the bottle's remaining contents flow down her throat.
  446.
  447. Rin
  448. "Thanks, Kenji."
  449.
  450. "I feel good."
  451.
  452. "Insatiably good. Like I should do something but there's nothing. There's nothing."
  453.
  454. Rin's face looks a bit distraught for a moment, but her drunken giddiness still shows.
  455.
  456. Kenji holds the neck of the bottle in his hand, taking the final drink. He fumbles it, simply spilling the vodka over his chin and neck.
  457.
  458. Rin
  459. "Kenji, can I kiss you?"
  460.
  461. Kenji
  462. "Wh-WHAT?"
  463.
  464. Both me and Kenji almost fall backwards in reaction.
  465.
  466. Rin
  467. "Vodka's good."
  468.
  469. Without giving Kenji a chance to respond, Rin swings her body around, her face put in front of Kenji's, her lips awkwardly crossing his. She moves to his chin and neck, licking wherever she tastes the alcohol.
  470.
  471. As soon as it happened, it ends, Rin returning to her normal sitting position.
  472.
  473. Rin
  474. "I was right. That was interesting."
  475.
  476. "No good though. The alcohol. Not enough."
  477.
  478. Kenji remains unmoving, almost literally paralyzed.
  479.
  480. Rin places a foot on the dirt and hoists herself up with a grunt.
  481.
  482. Rin
  483. "I should go to bed. I feel lost in time. A dream. Maybe. Maybe it'll be better when I wake up."
  484.
  485. Hisao
  486. "Sure, Rin, see ya."
  487.
  488. Rin nods at me, and then looks towards Kenji, noticing his state of stillness.
  489.
  490. Rin
  491. "Definitely interesting. That reaction."
  492.
  493. With that, she turns and starts to walk down the path. I consider helping her find her way, but Kenji probably needs attending to, as well.
  494.
  495. Kenji finally comes to, shaking his head slowly and rubbing his right temple. After a moment, he turns his head to me.
  496.
  497. Kenji
  498. "Did that just happen?"
  499.
  500. Hisao
  501. "The 'kiss'? Yeah."
  502.
  503. I open my mouth to continue, but I'm not certain what to think of the situation.
  504.
  505. Hisao
  506. "Hope you're still manly."
  507.
  508. Kenji
  509. "Shit yeah, you know it."
  510.
  511. "...that was pretty nice, though."
  512.
  513. "The soft lips of a girl. Man, there's nothing like it."
  514.
  515. "It reminds me of that girl I was with."
  516.
  517. Hisao
  518. "The one who sucked your life out?"
  519.
  520. Kenji
  521. "Yeah, that one."
  522.
  523. "Shit man."
  524.
  525. "SHIT."
  526.
  527. Kenji quickly brings his hands up and his face down, pressing them together, fingers crawling behind the frames of his glasses.
  528.
  529. Kenji
  530. "She was so damn perfect. What the hell, man. Why?"
  531.
  532. I can tell by his voice that he's sobbing now.
  533.
  534. Kenji's manic. He's unpredictable. Unstable. Highly emotional about whatever he's thinking about, but never like this. This is the first time I've ever seen Kenji cry. It makes me feel like everything is less of a joke now, all of his rants and ramblings and mannerisms of his.

  539. "Damn, Kenji."
  540.
  541. "Just..."
  542.
  543. "Damn..."
  544.
  545. Before I know it, I'm leaning over and sinking against Kenji's side. My head is spinning, my heart is beating as hard as ever, surely, due to the alcohol.
  546.
  547. I just need to rest.
  548.
  549. This is a fine place to rest.
