1. Life didn't simply stop for people to grieve. R'et and Calypsith knew that just as well as anyone else in the weyr- they liked to think they knew even better than most of their fellow riders. It was that knowledge that lead the pair to a small spot on the beach, R'et carefully arranging the last of the seats that formed a half-circle around where Calypsith was lounged on the sand, tail flicking back and forth lazily. Most of the, uh, 'chairs' weren't actually...well, chairs, but large hunks of driftwood they had roughly broken in to something people could sit on. With the weyr as it was, ingenuity was a bit of a requirement.

 3. Still, even if it was hardly the perfect classroom, R'et clapped his hands together loudly before turning to the bloodstained brown who had turned over a crab that had wandered near to her and was currently watching its struggles. "I think we're ready. Do you think you're ready? Oh, I hope they're excited." Despite the destitute state of the weyr, he flashed her a quick smile as she flipped the crab back over and lifted her head. I'm ready. And if they complain, we'll just show them what happens to dissenters. Absentmindedly, the brown flicked away the crab with her claw, watching it scuttle unsteadily towards the water and disappear beneath the surf.

 5. With a bit of a grunt, the dragon hauled herself to her feet, stretching out her serpentine body to its full length in an attempt to intimidate or impress or frighten the candidates. After all, she couldn't coddle them on their first meeting; that was what her rider was for. Candidates! Calypsith called out, claws sinking in to the soft sand. Come to the beach. You'll know you're in the right place if you see a very beautiful dragon. Even though none of them were there to see it, she posed slightly.

 7. "I'm beautiful too." R'et said with a small frown as he pushed his hand through his hair. The brown snorted and butt her head against the man's back gently. And a very beautiful man. Oh- and don't be late. She added, tail twitching in amusment at her rider's pleased hum.

 9. Thank you, sweetheart. Well, they have to know they're dealing with those superior to them in more ways than rank, don't they?
