  1. Epilogue
  2.
  3. She felt the bone-chilling cold the moment she reached the yard. Lifting her head, all she saw was the expanse of pure gray which was the sky, stretching out to infinity. It would be cold even in woolly socks, to say nothing of stockings. Christmas was drawing near, and a few days after that would be the period known as the New Year. It made one think, isn’t it foolish to drink tea in the yard during such cold weather? She thought that inside her, but she could not speak those words out loud. At least, not in this house.
  5.
  6. Totoyama Mamori walked through the mazy courtyard without hesitation. While calling a courtyard mazy might have sounded sinister, the truth was that the layout of this house’s courtyard was extremely complex. When the master of the house had abandoned his stewardship of the courtyard, his daughter had taken his place and grown trees and plants as she desired, allowing others to trim them to her desires, until the courtyard was in chaos. A gigantic teddy bear plush stood with its legs apart and its arms wide, a gigantic chess pawn blocked the passageway, a book stood up in an opened position, and a headless Nike of Samothrace statue haughtily overlooked everything. After passing through the garden maze filled with what could only be described as “a daughter’s interests”, one could see at its heart a round white table made out a single piece of wood.
  8.
  9. There sat the mistress of the courtyard… Hitokouji Kanoe, who was typing on a keyboard connected to her Magical Phone.
  11.
  12. “You’re slow, Mamori.”
  14.
  15. “Don’t look at me that way, I did my best to rush here.”
  17.
  18. She laid a plates, black tea and desserts around the keyboard, and after receiving permission to “have a seat”, she sat down on the opposite chair. The rattan chair -- which cost several years’ worth of Mamori’s allowance -- froze her buttocks mercilessly just by being placed in the chill wind.
  20.
  21. Kanoe took up her cup and sipped, then pushed a brown envelope over on the table.
  23.
  24. “What is this?”
  26.
  27. “A payment. It was a while ago, but you helped me with something, right? The plans in question have come to fruition, so...
  29.
  30. “What did I do?”
  32.
  33. Having to play along with her Lady’s pranks. Being the butt of pranks. Being ordered here and there. Being lied to. And on top of that, having to serve her Lady’s favorite black tea in this ridiculously cold courtyard. All of these things happened every day, or multiple times a day, but her Lady had never once paid her for them. According to Kanoe, “It would be too insensitive to repay Mamori’s kindness with mere cash.”
  35.
  36. While Mamori herself would not mind if she were insensitive, actually highlighting that would only anger her parents, who prioritized the Hitokouji family over everything else.
  38.
  39. “My Lady, were you not opposed to rewarding my kindness with cash?”
  41.
  42. “I see, the usual things are all expressions of your kindness, Mamori.”
  44.
  45. “Indeed, I am certain that must be how it appears to you, My Lady.”
  47.
  48. There was no way she could not have sensed the barbs in her words. However, Kanoe suddenly smiled, for an unknown reason.
  50.
  51. “That is not my payment to you. It is an official payment from the Land of Magic.”
  53.
  54. “This money comes from the Land of Magic?”
  56.
  57. “Strictly speaking, this is Mamori’s share, which I took from my own salary,”
  59.
  60. Perhaps emphasizing “my” and “I” was meant to make her feel indebted to Kanoe. Just the fact that her family was lodged with the Hitokouji family was a boon they could not hope to repay, so what would happen if she continued owing her more favors? After all, there were benefactors who sold others favors, and who ensured that those who owed them would never be able to recover. And Kanoe was one of those people, so there was no need to think about it at all.
  62.
  63. Mamori picked up the envelope Kanoe had handed her, cracked it open, and peeked inside.
  65.
  66. “...Forty thousand?”
  68.
  69. “No, forty-five thousand yen.”
  71.
  72. The thought, might as well not give anything if you’re only going to give this much arose in her mind. Perhaps it was because she was long since numbed to it.
  74.
  75. “Speaking of which, let’s go back to what I was saying earlier. What exactly did I do? It’s a little frightening to take money without knowing what I did.”
  77.
  78. “I asked you to modify those goggles.”
  80.
  81. “Ahh… that incident? Wasn’t that very long ago?”
  83.
  84. Communications ability aside, it could also delete login histories and broadcast a signal that could disrupt Magical Phones, and there was a strong scent of illegality around it. She even recalled her suspicions about what her Lady could be using it for, and it had made her feel very uneasy.
  86.
  87. “Mamori’s Magical Skill has improved, and thanks to that, many things could proceed smoothly.”
  89.
  90. “You didn’t use them for bad things, did you?”
  92.
  93. “What do you take me for?”
  95.
  96. “It is precisely because it’s you that I can’t help but worry, My Lady.”
  98.
  99. “As a Magical Girl of Justice, how could I possibly do bad things… Mm, these macarons are good. Try, some, Mamori.”
  101.
  102. She took a big bite of the macarons that her Lady offered her. They were so good that they annoyed her.
  104.
  105. “My Lady, what are you reading?”
  107.
  108. “A report from my subordinate.”
  110.
  111. “Speaking of which, you were promoted again this year, were you not, My Lady? Is it from your new subordinate?”
  113.
  114. “No, this report is from my previous subordinate. Someone reporting directly to me.”
  116.
  117. “I see~”
  119.
  120. “Terminating a few people is unavoidable when it comes to work, and this person helped me take care of that side of things.”
  122.
  123. “So even the Land of Magic is feeling the downturn, huh… that world’s quite hard to live in.”
  125.
  126. ‘“While it does appear to be giving employees the axe on the surface, on the business side it is not so much downsizing as it is reorganizing and restructuring. While they were quite useful to Human Resources in the past, now that I am in charge, we no longer need to do work of that sort. A fairy retires over the rainbow… does it not have a poetic feel to it?”
  128.
  129. “It seems that way.”
  131.
  132. “My workload has exploded all of a sudden. It is truly taxing.”
  134.
  135. “You don’t seem to be having a hard time at all.”
  137.
  138. “But it is hard. Now I also have to consider the balance of power with the other Divisions too.”
  140.
  141. “Is that so.”
  143.
  144. “Consider the Foreign Affairs Division. Why is it that they are so indelicate? I do not know if it is a tradition or something, but sending out combat experts to apply pressure on other Divisions is an outdated practice, one that is better off eliminated.”
  146.
  147. “Is that so.”
  149.
  150. “More to the point, recently, they even forced their Division’s ace into a criminal search operation run by Inspection Division, but their ace ended up being killed instead… the people from Foreign Affairs really should not have tried a scheme to grab the other Divisions by their vulnerables. They even set up a barrier just to capture the criminal alive… what a terrible loss for them. While Foreign Affairs was apparently bamboozled by false information from their informants, they really were too foolish. That being the case, I believe they’ll quiet down for quite a while.”
  152.
  153. “Is that so.”
  155.
  156. “Oh yes, come to think of it, there was also a major jailbreak recently. Thanks to that, a certain Division which used convicts to handle dirty work and do inhuman things is under investigation.”
  158.
  159. “Is that so…”
  161.
  162. “In truth, that division was opposed to we in Human Resources. Thanks to that, doing things will be easier for us now.”
  164.
  165. “Isn’t that good? What happened to the fugitives? They’re all cruel criminals, right?”
  167.
  168. “Of the three fugitives, two of them were successfully suppressed by the activities of the investigation team from the Inspection Division. However, the truth is that they were eliminated. While they could not be recaptured, they were infamous criminals of great villainy, so one could say that this was a great accomplishment. The leader of that team should be receiving a public commendation for that.”
  170.
  171. “How about the other one?”
  173.
  174. “I heard the last one got away. However, she seems to be the least significant of the lot.”
  176.
  177. “Is that so…”
  179.
  180. Kanoe should have noticed that she was deliberately answering in a very perfunctory way.
  182.
  183. “Mamori, you weren’t listening to me at all!”
  185.
  186. It would seem she had noticed.
  188.
  189. “My Lady’s words are too abstract and I cannot understand what you’re saying. It felt like it went in one ear and out the other. Nothing remained in my brain.”
  191.
  192. “I know that. That was why I told you.”
  194.
  195. “And why was there a need to specially tell me?”
  197.
  198. “Is that not obvious? Because I cannot speak to someone who can understand and remember this information.”
  200.
  201. “Please tell this to someone who can understand and remember it.”
  203.
  204. “I hope I will encounter someone like that someday. If the Land of Magic pulls itself together, if I am able to put myself in a position where I’ll be able to institute reform, and if Magical Girls are no longer beings to be ordered here and there…”
  206.
  207. Mamori was about to reply by saying she was talking about unrealistic things again, but after seeing Kanoe’s expression, she unconsciously shut her mouth. Kanoe had a look on her face that would normally never appear there, a stern expression without a hint of playfulness.
  209.
  210. “...What’s the matter?”
  212.
  213. “Nothing.”
  215.
  216. Kanoe shook her head in the same aloof way she usually did.
  218.
  219. "Good fortune cannot fall into the lap of those who do things half-heartedly. Even after you place the pieces in the right order, you still have to move them just right, tinker with them, match them up, blast them up, and prompt them to act by pretending to stop them. You have to make skillful adjustments to produce good results. And even after they have fulfilled your purpose, you have to put them away properly instead of carelessly throwing them away..."
  221.
  222. Drip -- a drop of water struck the round table, and it splashed her nose and hand.
  224.
  225. “Ahh, we should get inside. We’ll catch cold if we get drenched on such a cold day.”
  227.
  228. “That’s right ~nyan!”
  230.
  231. “What’s with ending your sentences like that? It’s gross.”
  233.
  234. “To think you would call me gross, you really are “polite”. I simply felt it was adorable and specially added it on.”
  236.
  237. ***
  238.
  239. The floor was concrete and the ceiling was marked with water stains. The interior dripped when the rain outside was heavy, so even on sunny days, the interior was very humid. While it was hard to say it was a good place to rest and recover, a wanted criminal had no right to complain.
  241.
  242. The room’s interior was very austere, and the number of things inside could be counted on the fingers of one hand. A bed, a table, blinds, a cooking counter, a bookshelf and the inhabitants. The big drawer of the rusted table in the center of the room was pulled open, and inside it were numerous small bottles, each containing multicolored powders.
  244.
  245. An old weighing balance came out from a small drawer on the second level and it went onto the table. Counterweights went onto one pan, and then medicinal powder was poured out until both sides were balanced. After checking the balance of the weights, the powder went into a bowl. This process repeated several times.
  247.
  248. An unmarked bottle came out of a small drawer on the third level, and its translucent contents were poured into the bowl. It was poured in carefully to keep anything from spilling out, and then ground with a pestle until there was no more rough granules could be felt.
  250.
  251. After an hour’s time, the gluey, metallic green medicine was finished.
  253.
  254. “Come, time for your medicine.”
  256.
  257. The voice called gently to the girl on the bed. The girl remained supine, but shook her head emotionlessly.
  259.
  260. “I don’t like medicine.”
  262.
  263. “You can’t say such selfish things. All this is so you get better.”
  265.
  266. Frederica narrowed her eyes and smiled, then sat by the bed. The girl on the bed was covered in bandages. Frederica undid some of the bandages to inspect the wounds, and she smiled to see that they were better than yesterday. Even if the environment was not clean and there were no proper medical facilities here, Magical Girls were tough. They had been made to be, after all.
  268.
  269. The medicine Frederica made was a viscous fluid, and it was hard to swallow. Therefore, Frederica placed the tip of a dropper into the bowl to collect medicine, raised the girl’s jaw, positioned it above her mouth and then inserted it. She did not want the girl to choke, so she slowly dripped drop after drop of the medicine into her mouth. One mouthful followed another, followed by a third, until the bowl was dry of its fluid. The girl who had her mouth open, like a chick waiting to be fed, was just adorable.
  271.
  272. “You can close your mouth now.”
  274.
  275. “Yes, master.”
  277.
  278.
  279.
  280. Frederica helped the girl up by supporting her upper body, and she ran the girl’s hair through her fingers, helping her comb it. THe long black hair was glossy and lustrous, and it felt wonderful running through her fingers. The reflection of the fluorescent lamp in it was very beautiful.
  283.
  284. Her right hand combed the girl’s hair, while the left hand caressed the girl’s left eye.
  286.
  287. “It tickles.”
  289.
  290. “Of course, that’s because I did it on purpose.”
  292.
  293. THe girl’s left eye was sealed by a long and large blade wound, while her left arm was missing below the elbow. These were the only two things which Frederica’s specially made medicine could not cure.

  301.
  302. The girl… Ripple was very lucky. The enemy Magical Girl had not intended to kill her, so she had not aimed her attacks at her weak points. When she passed out and fell, it was thanks to returning to her human state that caused the collar of her coat to hook onto a spur of rock on the side of the hole. That had kept her from falling to the bottom where she would have been pulverized. In addition, Frederica had originally intended to flee the scene right away, but an impulse had driven her to watch until the end, which had allowed her to recover Ripple and give her emergency treatment.

From that day on, Frederica had been responsible for Ripple’s care.

She had progressed far beyond the stage when Frederica had believed that she had not grown as much as Snow White, and she had become an amazing Magical Girl whom she could be proud of no matter where she went. As she was now, she was quite close to the ideal in Frederica’s heart.

  326. Her expression did not change, and her voice was a monotone. Perhaps it was because she was using someone else’s magic item, but she could not finetune it too well. However, Ripple’s joy did not seem faked. She had her cute points in this state.
