142.
Armadillos have protective bony plates covering almost their entire body, except their ears and stomach. They are the only living mammals to have such shells, thus making them unique. They are closely related to sloths and anteaters and have pointed snouts and small eyes. They range in size from 15 centimeters long (pink fairy armadillo) to 5 feet long (giant armadillo). Armadillos have poor eyesight and hearing but have an amazing sense of smell. Although they don’t look it, armadillos are actually quite agile and can run and swim very well.

 147.
All 21 species of Armadillo are found in the Western Hemisphere. Armadillos originated from South America but a few species have migrated as far north as Missouri. Most armadillos species tend to stick near the equator because they lack enough fat to keep themselves warm otherwise. Armadillos are extremely picky about where live, they like to live in places with loose soil to make burrowing easier. Their borrows tend to be 7-8 inches in diameter and can go up to 15 feet deep.

 152.
Armadillos are mainly insectivores. They eat beetles, larvae, worms, grasshoppers, ants, maggots and snails. Their sticky tongues make the consumption of insects easier. Their favorite meal is earthworms. Although it is way less common, they are also known to eat berries and mushrooms.

 157.
Armadillos sleep up to 16 hours a day and are nocturnal creatures. They keep cool during the day in their burrows and forage for food during the night. Armadillo reproduction is very unique. When impregnated, the fertilized egg splits into four identical zygotes causing female armadillos to always have quadruplets. Armadillos are independent animals and only interact with others to breed or take care of babies. Young armadillos become independent after 6-12 months.

 162.
Armadillos are used often in the study of leprosy. They are particularly susceptible to to the leprosy bacterium due to their abnormally low body temperature. If humans handle or consume armadillos it is possible for them to gain a leprosy infection. Armadillos are also studied for their bizarre reproductive system.

 169.
Despite common belief, only the three banded armadillo can roll up into a ball when threatened.

 170.
Armadillo in Spanish means “little armored one”.

 171.
The nine-banded Armadillo is the official state animal of Texas.

 172.
Armadillos can hold their breath for as long as 6 minutes, and due to the weight of their shell they can walk along the bottom of a body of water.

 173.
In the wild armadillos live an estimated 5-7 years, but in captivity they can live up to 15 years.
