  3. The Kirigon Theory of Speed at Higher Levels
  4.
  5. Hello everyone, LinkCode here! This is a short guide to speed in Custom Game.
  6.
  7. Many people play Custom Game with Level 9999 pokemon. You've seen some of the common things people run on their teams: Wonder Guard pure electric-types with Air Balloons, Sturdy Shedinja, No Guard Deoxys-Speed, Magikarp with either Wonder Guard or Sturdy, and a shitload of Mega Rayquaza. But what many don't know is that speed is not like it is down at level 100. Up here, a Choice Scarfed Swift Swim Deoxys-Speed in Rain with a Tailwind and 6 Speed boosts could be outsped by a paralyzed Shuckle or Pyukumuku holding an Iron Ball.
  8. Basically, it doesn't matter how fast you are.
  9. At least, to an extent.
  10. A user named Kirigon (who is very good at Custom Game, and the only one who can consistently defeat me) enlisted my help in testing speed intervals. After some testing, he named the 4 speed intervals "S-T", "U-V", "W-X", and "Y-Z".
  11. Here's a replay, for reference: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/customgame-374922471
  12.
  13.
  14. S-T interval: Speeds ranging from 0 to 1807
  15. This interval encompasses the speeds that pokemon are normally at down in Level 100 games. The exact speed stat matters, down to a single point. Speed ties only occur when the speed stat is the same, and Trick Room works perfectly fine. Pokemon in this speed interval are outsped by pokemon in the U-V and Y-Z intervals, and is mirrored by the W-X interval.
  16.
  17.
  18. U-V interval: Speeds ranging from 1809 to 8191
  19. The fastest interval. Pokemon in this interval outspeed pokemon in the S-T, W-X, and Y-Z intervals, regardless of whether or not Trick Room is active. The exact speed stat still matters down to a single point, so if Trick Room is up, a slower U-V pokemon will outspeed a faster U-V pokemon.
  20.
  21.
  22. W-X interval: Speeds ranging from 8192 to 9999
  23. This strange interval acts as a mirror to S-T. A pokemon with 9999 speed will speed tie with a pokemon with 1807 speed, a pokemon with 9998 speed will speed tie with a pokemon with 1806 speed, etc. A pokemon in S-T with a higher speed than the S-T speed that a W-X pokemon mirrors will outspeed it; and if said S-T pokemon has a speed lower than the S-T speed that a W-X pokemon mirrors, then it will be outsped.
  24. This is probably confusing you, so I will try to simplify it.
  25.
  26. To find the S-T speed that a W-X pokemon mirrors, use the following equation:
  27. (S-T speed) + 8192 = (W-X mirror)
  28. Conversely, you can use this:
  29. (W-X speed) - 8192 = (S-T mirror)
  30.
  31. So, for example, 1000 + 8192 = 9192. 9192 is 1000's mirror, and therefore speedties with it. Pokemon with speeds between 0 and 999 and between 8192 and 9191 will be outsped by pokemon with speeds between 1000 and 1807 and between 9192 and 9999. (This is not counting the U-V and Y-Z intervals, which both outspeed S-T and W-X anyway.)
  32. Since this interval is a mirror to S-T, all rules that apply to S-T apply to W-X as well, which means Trick Room works fine.
  33.
  34.
  35. Y-Z interval: Speeds of 1808 and 10000+
  36. This interval is the interval where most common pokemon people use are, such as Deoxys-Speed, Chansey and Blissey, Mega Rayquaza, Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, and so on. Two pokemon in this speed range will always speed tie with each other, no matter what their exact speed stat is. As mentioned before, pokemon in this interval will outspeed pokemon in the S-T and W-X intervals, and will be outsped by pokemon in the U-V interval. Although 1808 is not adjacent to any other number in this interval, it acts exactly like every other number in Y-Z. This is the only interval in which Trick Room does not matter.
  37.
  38.
  39. Important side note: Moves with different priority brackets do not take speed into account unless both Pokémon are using moves in the same priority bracket.
  40.
  41.
  42. Conclusion: It is optimal to have a speed as close to the top of U-V as possible. The following pastebin lists the various ways a pokemon can reach exactly 8191 speed, as well as the 3 other highest U-V speeds that can be accessed without the use of an Iron Ball: http://pastebin.com/K7zgkJjQ

  44. [16:20:50] Kirigon: Thanks to everyone who helps and helped me <3
