  1. In Animal Farm, the ideas of class structures in societies that are supposedly against such things are well established and mentioned. After forcing Jones, their oppressor, out of the farm, the pigs begin to take over and enforce rules just as Jones did prior. This creates class barriers between the pig’s upper class, running how the farm functions and development and the working class, the labourers of the farm such as the horses, the sheep and the other common animals of the farm. This kind of behaviour could be drawn parallel to the Soviet Union and how it was run under communist rule. It began believing in the end of the class system with all being equal and power to the working class but due to the greed of their political leaders, the lines between what they aspired to be and what they desired to destroy became blurred and eventually became indiscernible.

  3. Another feature of this book is the representation of the Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union through the characters of the book. Napoleon and Snowball represent Stalin, the tyrannical dictator and Trotsky, the idealist. Boxer represents the greatest qualities of the working class; strong, willing and able to work. Squealer can be compared to a propaganda minister for Animal Farm, using language to persuade the common animals through whatever means possible. He simplifies the language to dissuade debate on what the pigs establish as rule. By using complex language at times, he confuses the animals and removes all traces of doubt from their minds with infallible statistics. Jones represents the Tsars of Russia before the revolution, as they were thrown out in replacement for a new form of government, namely the Soviet Union.
