- "You know, this is all your fault..."
- >Rainbow was done struggling.
- >She'd twisted and turned, strained her muscles and grit her teeth, but her bonds were implacable.
- >Blowing a sweat soaked strand of hair out of her face, she stared with an odd fascination at the object in her captor's hand.
- >"Whatever you say, guy. I still don't get it."
- >Her captor barked a harsh laugh, head thrown back, the whites of their eyes shining in the dim light.
- "I'm not surprised. You're not really the type to notice events unfolding around you."
- >Hopping down off the decrepit dresser her captor had been perched on, they slowly circled Rainbow, trailing their free hand across her shoulders.
- >Rainbow's brow crinkled.
- >A week ago, a month, a year, she would have taken comfort in that touch.
- >Even now, in this situation, no matter how wrong it was, that touch felt right.
- >"Why are you... What're you trying to do, here?"
- >Rainbow's confusion was clear, and her eyes settled on that cold lump in her captor's hand as they crossed back in front of her.
- >"What do you need that for?"
- >Her captor blinked, looking down at their hand as if they'd forgotten what they were holding.
- >Smiling sadly, they turned around, laying it on the dresser. Fingers hesitantly stroked the length, before they turned back to Rainbow.
- "Don't worry about it. You're good at that. If you have to, think of it as one outcome among many."
- >Plopping down into a crouch in front of Rainbow, her captor's sad smile was directed at her now.
- "So, let's talk. It's been a while, but do you remember Snails?"
- >Rainbow blinked. Of course she remembered.
- >"Of course I do. It's not that common for something like that to happen around here."
- >Her captor's face fell slightly, and they turned away for a moment.
- "That's how you remember him, hmm? I guess it's not surprising. Know why?"
- >Rainbow looked into her captor's serious expression, confused as ever.
- >"Uh, no? No one does."
- "Hmph. Not quite true. Snails knew. Snips does, and guess who else?"
- >Her captor leaned in, rubbing a cheek softly against hers as their lips brushed her ear.
- "Little, old, me."
- >Her captor leaned back, that same sad smile playing across their lips.
- >Rainbow's brow furrowed in confusion and a touch of concern.
- >"Why didn't you tell anyone...?"
- >Her captor chuckled, resting back on their heels.
- "With the great Rainbow Dash as a beacon of inspiration in front of me? Come on, why would I tell someone when I could DO something about it?"
- >Rainbow grimaced as she saw her usual confident smirk reflected back at her.
- >"What can YOU do? What could anyone do...?"
- >That familiar grin widened, losing all semblance of normalcy.
- "Make it right, duh! Well, maybe not right. Better? Not really that either, I guess. Maybe I just wanna make some kind of gesture."
- >Rainbow tiredly watched her captor tap their finger against their lips, looking up at the ceiling.
- "I'd ask if you want in on the little secret, but that's kind of the point of this whole, thing, we've got going here."
- >Laying down on the floor, Rainbow's captor propped their head up on their hand, looking up at her.
- "He knew, you know? He knew he never had a chance. Stubborn, though. Maybe a bit slow? Optimistic."
- >Sweat broke out on Rainbow's forehead, and she strained lightly against her bonds for the first time in an hour.
- >"Stop..."
- >Blinking, her captor looked surprised.
- "Now you get it? That was quick. Remembering some things? Towels after a hard game? A cup of water thrust out from the sidelines during a marathon?"
- >Rainbow did remember. So many little things. But mostly a shy smile, fleeting as she turned away, over and over again.
- Yeah. I think you've got the idea. Snails had a real thing for Somedays. Seems he didn't like Nevers that much."
- >Rainbow squeezed her eyes shut, her breath ragged in her breast.
- >"I... I didn't know, okay? He was just some kid, you know? I don't even..."
- "Swing that way? I'd never have guessed."
- >Her captor lifted an eyebrow, that smirk flitting back over their lips as they flicked the pendant hanging between Rainbow's breasts lightly.
- >Rainbow just stared at the matching necklace around her captor's neck.
- "Not many people who did. Certainly not him. But then you had to go and make it oh so obvious."
- >Rainbow flinched.
- >The state championships.
- >Soaring on wings of pride and adrenaline.
- >Not even caring anymore.
- >Running to the sidelines, her friends and schoolmates cheering for her.
- >Brushing them aside as she sought out that special one.
- >Lifting her in her arms, spinning her around and around, both laughing.
- >Tumbling to the grass on top of her.
- >Leaning down, eyes on fire and that smirk she wore so often bearing down on her.
- >Lips against hers. Shocked eyes, slowly accepting.
- "You didn't see his face. He was standing over us, and when you backed up, it was all I could see."
- >Sighing, her captor scrubbed her fingers through her hair in an irritated fashion.
- "You don't think you're going to see that kind of devastation on a kid's face. How bad do you think it is when you might love that kid?"
- >Rainbow stared blankly at her captor for a few seconds.
- >"L-loved..?"
- >Her hand reaching back up to her scalp, Rainbow's captor grimaced as she scratched.
- "Yeah, so what? Maybe I was confused. Maybe I was still a kid, and didn't know what I wanted."
- >Rainbow watched, appalled, as her captor's fingers left her scalp, fresh blood staining her fingernails.
- "Maybe I was jealous of all that selfless devotion I saw getting heaped on you, so I went along with it. Teach him a lesson for not noticing what was right in front of him."
- >Rainbow's captor sighed, rolling away from her and curling up in a fetal ball.
- "He called me the next day. Told me to be happy. Didn't know what to say."
- >Rainbow watched her captor's hand reach up to her head again, and imagined she could hear the tearing skin.
- "Then he was gone. Snips disowned me. He actually hit me at the funeral. Didn't think he had it in him..."
- >Rainbow remembered.
- >The raised voices, and turning to see her sprawled on the ground, Snips standing over her.
- >Split knuckles, red face, screaming down at her as she cried, shaking her head, shaking her body, everything about her screaming denial.
- >People dragging him away, arms still reaching out, fingers grasping empty air.
- >Holding her, cradling her head against her chest, sobs wracking her body.
- 'I didn't mean it!'
- "Yeah. Anyway, the girls were there for me, and you. But, you know? I'm a little tired."
- >Rainbow watched as she turned slowly back to her.
- >She knew what Snails had looked like, that day on the soccer field.
- >Her captor's eyes were black pits, her mouth a slack line.
- >She watched as a trickle of blood from her torn scalp slid slowly down her forehead, beading on an eyelash before a slow blink flicked it away.
- >"It's not your fault. You didn't make him do that."
- >Rainbow's words sounded hollow even to her, and her captor scoffed.
- "Didn't I? Didn't WE? It doesn't matter. It happened. Now we get to deal with it."
- >Rainbow thought she would wince when arms wrapped around her, but she found herself leaning her chin into the hollow of her captor's neck.
- "I'll tell you another secret, Rainbow. I'm not dealing with it very well..."
- >Rainbow felt hot liquid drip against her cheek, and hoped it was tears instead of blood.
- >"I'm so sorry, baby..."
- >Hands stroked Rainbow's back gently, squeezing her tight before she backed off, slipping off her lap.
- "Me, too, baby. I've been trying to decide for a while if that was enough. I think I made my decision, though..."
- >Footsteps heavy, her captor walked back to the ruined dresser, picking up the gun and getting it in her hand.
- "Funny, people in movies, they always say these things are heavier than they expected..."
- >Rainbow's eyes bulged, and her muscles burned as she strained against her bonds again.
- >"D-don't...
- >Pulling a phone out of her pocket, Rainbow's captor dialed a number.
- "Feels light as a feather to me..."
- >Rainbow jerked in the chair, jumping up and down, trying to break the chair, snap the ropes, anything.
- "I just wanted you to know, yeah? It sucks, wondering why..."
- >'911, what is the nature of your emergency?'
- >"S-stop! Don't do this! It's not too late!"
- >Rainbow's captor smiled that small, tired smile at her again, and her heart broke on seeing it.
- >That was good-bye.
- "1276 Remington Ln."
- >"N-no... NOOOO! DON'T!!!"
- >Click.
- >BANG.
- >Wails of anguish filled the night, only the to be washed away by sirens a few minutes later.
