I restarted the Windows Audio Service -- no change.
When I 'change the volume' using the taskbar thing, it usually dings so you can 'test' the volume as you change it.  Not only do I not hear any audio, I do not see the green 'volume-o-meter' springing to life, the thing that shows you which application is playing sounds currently.  -Nothing- shows up at all.

Chrome/The APps -do- show up on the volume mixer for the device, which is the only one on the system.

No sound with either on-board audxio or when plugging in external speakers.
