  1. I have a serious issue with this whole "privilege" concept that all my generation pals seem to be throwing around. At first, I couldn't put my finger on what about this whole "privilege" deal irritates me. Seriously, I feel resentment when I read these things. Why? I've thought about it, and I've realized why. There are SEVERAL reasons the whole notion of "privilege" is offensive. First off, I'm gay, atheist, and at present, I'm exceptionally poor. So clearly- my privilege is limited according to this "quiz". So don't stereotype me as the typical "rich entitled white male". And seriously, how many of you made that assumption immediately? (See? We ALL sometimes use stereotypes inaccurately) One problem is that not ALL people in a group experience life the SAME way. This depends on ALL members of a group being EQUALLY disenfranchised. I was raised in the south and it was very difficult to be gay there. However, if I were raised by supportive parents in New England, then gay would not be much problem at all. See the issue here? Not all gays are at a disadvantage- some have worse deals than others. As it is with virtually every category here. Not all members of a group necessarily have or don't have privilege because they are members of said group. Another issue is that this is overwhelmingly an "I have it worse than everybody else/ it's not my fault that I suck at life because I am underprivileged/ please feel sorry for me" contest. Seriously, life is hard for EVERYONE. Everyone gets sick, everyone gets to die. Some may be luckier, but how lucky you are has very little to do with color, orientation or creed, and a LOT more to do with, well, LUCK. And this implies that people who are more privileged have no problems. This is simply NOT true. Life sucks for EVERYONE! Welcome to being human. I also feel the whole privilege thing only sparks resentment amongst stereotypically disenfranchised groups. If there is ONE GROUP that does have privilege- it is the RICH. That's honestly the ONLY group that DOES generally have it easier. I feel we should all band together to make the world a more economically fair place and stop whining about each of our personal problems and having contests to see who we feel the most sorry for.
