  2. Foreign tourists have been visiting the Dogon for decades. As time goes by more and more Dogon perform with their art to earn income from the tourist trade. This has completely changed the context in which Dogon art is made and understood. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? What could the benefits be, and what could the problems be?

  9. The spirits that control the lives of the Lobi people can be described as invented spirits. That is they were spiritual beings that play an important role in people's lives because there is a need for their protection. When the need is there the spirits are important, when the need disappears the spirits disappear as well. Do we have any similar system in our own culture? Are there similar invented spirits in other people's cultures? Name some invented spirits that you know about and describe the ways they provide their blessings.

  15. For decades very little was known about the art and culture of the Mossi people of Burkina Faso. Research on their art has revealed that there are different styles are distributed based on the ancient conquest of the original farming peoples by horsemen from the South. The result is that art has come to serve as a original document for understanding these people.

  22. I have always believed that when cultures mix the results are much richer than the originals. We have seen this to be true in the impact of African music on Western music, in the impact of the art of the subcontinent India and Japan on European and American art, and in many other examples.
  23.

  30. Americans tend not to think very much about kingship art in Africa, nor do they think of the great depth of history in Africa. The art of the kingdom of Benin in Nigeria is a good example of the ancient history of Africa, and of the fact that African artists were and are capable of creating very beautiful things for the use of Kings and Queens.

  41. The art of ancient Ife is a bit of a surprise, because it is so realistic. Most of us come to African art with the idea that it is all very abstract, and we are surprised when we see how naturalistic are the portraits of the kings of ancient Ife.
  42.
  43. In your opinion, what is it about the use of these objects and their subject matter that results in their naturalism and realism?
  44. In your opinion, if these objects are so realistic why is other African art so abstract?

  51. Eshu is the God of choices and consequences, he is also the God of the crossroads, where people need to make choices. I am particularly fond of Eshu because I believe very strongly in the importance of consequences. If you think carefully before you act or speak then you honor Eshu. If you act impulsively then you have neglected Eshu, and he will suffer the consequences. If you act or speak impulsively, it is quite possible that you will make a bad decision. The Yoruba people of Nigeria understand how important such things are.
