そういった者をここへ捨てるという忌わしい風習があったのだが

The man brought out some cloth from his belongings that had been through into the hole with him.

元々は染物業者で行商をやっていた男は野盗に襲われ傷を負ったがある村に助けられた
The man had made his living as a textiles merchant. When he was attacked and wounded by bandits, a nearby village took him in.
しかし村を大火事が襲い…手も食料も足りないためその犠牲者全てを山の穴に捨てたとの事だった
But that village suffered a great fire... without enough hands or food to go around, they cast all the victims into the hole in the mountain.

男は幾日かかけてヤマメの瘴気に寄せられた怨霊を集めに来ていた燐を真似た洋服を繕い拵え
The man spent several days with Yamame. At one point, Rin came to collect the vengeful spirits that had approached Yamame's miasma, and the man labored to make a dress modeled after the one she wore.
