  6. Hello,
  7.
  8. I am a proficient coder in C/C++. I want to start with contributing to KDE and I have gone through the Website but I cannot find anything to start with or anything I can work on..
  9. I urge you to provide me with some lead so that I can start contributing towards KDE.
  10.
  11. Thank You.

  14. Hello Sameer,
  15.
  16. Glad to hear and thanks for reaching out. Just to start, have you thought about what projects or programs you may want to get involved with? Depending on what project you get into, this will determine how much of KDE you can run from your distribution and how much we will need to get you to compile.
  17.
  18. Cheers,
  19. Will

  24. Well I have a good knowledge of C and C++ concepts and some experience with them...So any project which involves theae two up to a basic level will be good..I have some good knowledge of computer Networks also...

  31. Hello Sameer,
  32.
  33. I have been looking at different projects and would recommend KDevelop
  34. for you as this is a nice mature project but there is always stuff to
  35. work on and it is fun for people that like programming. Also, you can
  36. compile dev kdevelop and run it on top of your existing KDE
  37. installation.
  38.
  39. Getting to your first improvement is the most important of working
  40. with the team. A lot of people have trouble compiling the sources or
  41. understanding what they are doing. I want to help you get past that
  42. and get your FIRST patch in. No matter how small it is. There are a
  43. few special tasks in the bug system that are specifically recommended
  44. for new contributors, called Junior Jobs or "jj". Here are a couple
  45. inside the bug tracker for KDevelop
  46. https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=kdevelop%20jj
  47.
  48. As a first step could you please let me know if you are able to
  49. compile the kdevelop sources (or any other project you want to work
  50. on) and run it on your system?
  51.
  52. Cheers,
  53. Will

  63. Sameer here..I was off for my university exams...So I couldn't check much of the stuff. Last time you wrote about the kdevelop sources.
  64. Well firstly i would like to know as to which Linux I should install so that I can work on KDE with ease. And then after having the KDE Environment what should be my next step..What is with KDevelop and everything..
  65. I am sorry I took a long break...but now I want to make up for the time and get a head start into it..So Looking forward to your reply...

  80. Hello Sameer,
  81.
  82. Great, and I am back now too from vacation. The easiest way to get started is to install Kubuntu. You can install on your computer or you can create a virtual machine and then install into that.
  83.
  84. You will want to play with the system for a little bit, maybe set up your email and try some of the games or import music first. This will help because you will recognize some of the names when you are looking at the source code.
  85.
  86. Please let me know if you are having any troubles getting up and running and then please let me know some of apps that look the most fun for you.

  135.
  136. Excellent, glad to hear. Please try accessing the different applications that are installed by default in your distribution. These will all be visible from the KDE menu. The first way to contribute is by being a user! You will want to be comfortable using KDE for a little bit as a user before doing any coding. And this will help you see which part of the system you would like to start tinkering with.
  137.
  138. Do you have an idea of which applications you would like to get involved with? Or are you looking for anywhere to start?

  212. Hello Sameer,
  213.
  214. Yes, sorry for the slowness, I have been busy with Christmas preparation.
  215.
  216. I have been looking for a few bugs in the issue tracking system that would be easiest for you to get started with.
  217.
  218. Our bug tracking system is at https://bugs.kde.org/ and tasks that are good for beginners are labeled with "JJ" which stands for Junior Job.
  219.
  220. At the moment I am not seeing any simple bugs in the Games applications. Here is another application that is pretty self-contained, it is Okular.
  221.
  222. One issue I have found that we can work together on is https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=188239
  223.
  224. Please take a look at this bug and confirm if you can fully reproduce it using the files attached there. I have also put a few notes in there.
  225.
  226. Next please try to build Okular locally using that Git repository. We always want to make sure that the bug exists in the current code, not just the released version which goes to packages.
  227.
  228. It seems like we will be able to get the PDF information from the library, save it to the Okular::DocumentInfo. Then when the file is opened we will be able to select the view based on this.
  229.
  230. Cheers,

  235. Hey Will,
  236.
  237. Sorry for Bugging you by constantly mailing you.
  238.
  239. Okular I see is a document viewer. I tested the the two attachment columnleft and columnright on Adobe and then Okular.
  240. I think the bug is that we want the view of the document in ocular to be same as that in adobe reader either automatically or selecting as to which of the given ways the document is to be viewed.
  241.
  242. You have mentioned in your mail if I can reproduce it and that you have added some notes. As of this, I don't understand what reproduce means here.
  243.
  244. Also, I am not familiar with how git works(I can learn it, I have some basic understanding) and then how can I build Okular.
  245.
