  1. NYARLATHOTEP
  2.
  3. "Nyarlathotep" (1920) - "And it was then that Nyarlathotep came out of Egypt. Who he was, none could tell, but he was of the old native blood and looked like a Pharaoh. The fellahin knelt when they saw him, yet could not say why. He said he had risen up out of the blackness of twenty-seven centuries, and that he had heard messages from places not on this planet."

  7. GENERAL ZULA / THAT CAT IN THE DEMONICA
  8.
  9. The breed [Abyssinian] is sometimes believed to have originated from one Egyptian female kitten named Zula, who was taken from a port in Alexandria by a British soldier and brought to England in 1868. This theory is not established because there is no solid link between Zula and the cat first listed as an Abyssinian in 1882.
  10.
  11. Many sources repeat the story that the Abyssinian breed is a few thousand years old and comes from Ancient Egypt, as the cats resemble those in ancient paintings. Ancient Egyptians made sculptures of them. There are also stories that wild 'Abyssinians' live in parts of North Africa today.

  13. THE DREAMLANDS
  14.
  15. The town of Ulthar is part of H. P. Lovecraft's Dream Cycle, appearing in such stories as The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (1926), "The Cats of Ulthar" (1920) and "The Other Gods" (1933).
  16. Ulthar is located "beyond the River Skai" and its most significant law is that "no man may kill a cat", a statute instituted because of the horrific vengeance visited upon the last people to do so. Cats in Ulthar are intelligent and can communicate with humans that speak their tongue. The modest Temple of the Elder Ones is found in Ulthar and, at the time of Randolph Carter’s visit, its patriarch was Atal, one time companion of Barzai the Wise.

  18. Other locales include "The Underworld" (a subterranean region underneath the Dreamlands and inhabited by monsters), the "Moon" (accessible via a ship and inhabited by "moon-beasts", creatures allied with Nyarlathotep) and Kadath, a huge castle atop a mountain and the domain of the "Great Ones".

  20. RANDOLPH CARTER / CHANDRAPUTRA / MAN IN GOLD
  21.
  22. "Out of the Aeons" (1933) - one of the visitors to the museum is a strange man who calls himself "Swami Chandraputra." This is actually Randolph Carter, who, as described in "Through the Gates of the Silver Key," uses that alias after his mind is trapped in an alien body.

  26. "The Silver Key" (1926) – perhaps the most overtly philosophical of Lovecraft's fiction - finds Carter entering middle age and losing his "key to the gate of dreams." No longer is Carter able to escape the mundane realities of life and enter the Lovecraftian dreamworld that alone has given him happiness. Wonder is gone and he has forgotten the fact that life is nothing more than a set of mental images, where there is no fundamental distinction between dreams and reality and no reason to value one above the other. In an attempt to recover his lost innocence, Carter returns to his childhood home and finds a mysterious silver key, which allows him to enter a cave and magically emerge again in the year 1883 as a child, full of wonder, dreams, and happiness. He remains in this condition until 1928, when he again disappears, presumably having found a way to transcend space and time and travel in other dimensions.
