  6. +nationalparksign __ With the video - @ 2m:33s - that excerpt of "Kanzi" seemingly getting *some* of the words right comes from a longer (though still edited) segment *where we don't see the speaker's mouth*.
  7.
  8. For reference purposes I am referring to 2m:33s of the video you listed in your post: https://youtu.be/HZ-40_4chlI?t=153
  9.
  10. What isn't apparent in the video you specified is that there's *a hard cut* just before we see "Kanzi" get the word "water" correct (after clearly seeing the speaker ask it)!
  11.
  12. You can't have known this without knowing about the longer video it came from!
  13.
  14. At the start of the longer video (which it comes from) we see an audience watching. Later in the video the audience does not seem to be present any longer.
  15.
  16. *It could be "Kanzi" required half an hour* (and several incorrect presses) *before he got it right and the footage was used.*
  17.
  18. Team "Kanzi" are very proud of that clip because it really does _seem_ as though "Kanzi" is responding to a word we can *see* get spoken. _But it comes immediately after a hard cut!_
  19.
  20. It's highly likely "Kanzi" *can* press the right button for a *few* of the words - but out of the "400+" we're told he knows it's interesting that he is only asked about *the same few words* (in a most dodgy manner).
  21.
  22. Here is the longer version which that excerpt came from. The subsequent links are for the same video but set to the relevant time.
  23.
  24. Source video:

  26.
  27. *Key Points:*
  28.
  29. 1) Notice that there is an audience present at the start of the video. Pay attention to how it all looks at 23s (I'll return to that in a moment):
  30. https://youtu.be/wRM7vTrIIis?t=23
  31.
  32.
  33. 2) Next - watch between 1m:38s and 1m:46s to observe the hard cut before "Kanzi" is asked about "water". It is cheating to show her mouth asking a word *immediately after a hard cut* because there could have been a hundred failures just prior!
  34. https://youtu.be/wRM7vTrIIis?t=98
  35.
  36. 3) Finally - notice at 2m:23s when the camera zooms out there does not appear to be a crowd present even though the view is not dissimilar to what we saw at 23s
  37. https://youtu.be/wRM7vTrIIis?t=142
  38.
  39. The way it could work is that "Kanzi" was asked several words with the audience present but not asked to repeat any of them until later when the audience had left.
  40.
  41. With the audience gone the same words could be asked again and then "Kanzi" has all day to press the same/correct icon which is then shown in the final footage to impress the public.
  42.
  43. This way it appears that "Kanzi" knows the symbols. If "Oprah" and "TIME" are talking about "Kanzi" then who would suspect a trick?!
  44.
  45. From what I have seen the only two "lexigrams" that "Kanzi" probably knows are "water" and "egg". *I am sure you could train a dog to pick out "water" and "egg" as well.*

  51.
  52. Here is a chicken (yes - a chicken!) picking out the correct flag from a set of flags. If a chicken can do this then we should not be impressed with "Kanzi" picking out "water" and "egg" after hard cuts.
  53.
  54. Chicken training time: 10 days according to the video description.
  55. "Kanzi" training time: years to decades.
