A Kiss on the Cheek

	T'was a chilly afternoon in Echo Creek, California. It was actually sixty degrees which is pretty warm, but that's not the point. The point is that it was Mid-February and Valentine's day was in full swing at Echo Creek Academy, and love was in the air. The student couples wandered the halls arm-in-arm blissfully, mumbling sweet things into each others ears as they walked. The single students scowled bitterly as they walked by, or quaked in fear as they prepared to ask out their crushes. Marco Diaz fell into the second category.
	"MARCOWATCHOUT!" Star bellowed, as she tackled him, sending him crashing into the ground.
	"Star, what the hec- mmph!" Marco tried to speak, but he was cut off by Star placing a hand over his mouth.
	"We gotta get you out of here! There are Mewberty hearts everywhere, you could get abducted by some Mewbescent Mewnian and get wrapped up in a love-nest for days!" Star removed her hand from Marco's mouth and started dragging him away by his feet.
	"Star, stop." He wrestled his way out of her grasp and picked a heart off the wall. "It's paper, see? For Valentine's day." He punctuated his point by ripping the heart in half and letting it flutter to the floor.
	"Explain this Valentine's day ritual..."
	"Well, Star," he said, "It's an Earth holiday where you spend time with people you like." Star squealed and wrapped Marco into a hug.
	"Awesome! A special day for us to spend together!"
	"Ah, not like that, Star. It's for people you LIKE like. Not like how we like each other." Marco gently pulled off Star as she squealed again, at an even higher pitch and wrapped him in an even tighter hug.
	"Awesomer! Maybe today Oskar will finally ask me on an Earth date!" Marco smiled
	"Good luck, Star! And good luck to me, 'cuz today I'll finally ask Jackie to go on a date with me!" He said the last part of that statement to nobody, as Star had already ran off to hover around Oskar and his keytar. He checked his watch. 7:51 AM. Plenty of time to get in position. He leaned back against his locker and waited. 7:54. Any second now, Jackie would be rolling around the corner on her skateboard and he'd stop her and ask her out. Simple as that.
	Except she didn't come around the corner at 7:54 AM. Or 7: 55 AM. Time was running out before school started at 8:00. Marco strode worriedly around the corner and stopped dead in his tracks.
	Jackie.
	Holding a teddy bear and flowers.
	Walking hand in hand.
	With Blake.
	And his stupid friggin' beard.
	Marco dropped the card he had made for Jackie, a lacey heart with a kitten on the outside that read "you're purr-fect". A wave of depression crashed over him as he trudged to the bathroom and locked himself in a stall. He sat in the musty restroom until the bell rung that dismissed the students. Star chattered away about Oskar and his keytar on the walk home, but Marco didn't listen. As soon as he got home he laid down on his bed and waited.
	An eternity later, his door opened and he looked up. It was dark out, so he clicked his lamp on.
	"Marco?" Star stepped into his room and sat next to him. "You haven't moved all day. Are you alright?" Marco heaved a sigh and scooted up next to Star.
	"Yeah. It's just... Jackie." Star grunted in understanding and let him speak his mind. "I didn't even get the chance to ask before Blake and his stupid beard stepped in. It's not like she would have gone out with me anyway. Why do I even try, Star? You and I both know she's way out of my league."
	"Oh Marco. You just haven't understood yet. You're a handsome boy that's gonna grow into an even handsomer man. You're the nicest and most caring person I've ever met ever and everyone around school likes you. Could you provide any reason Jackie wouldn't say yes if you asked her out?" Marco said nothing for a minute. Star smiled at his silence. "That's what I thought.  I'm sure Jackie will move on in a month or two, you know how it is with us kids. Then you can swoop in and do unspeakable sexy things with her." Marco chuckled.
	"Thanks Star, I feel better. Happy Valentine's day." He leaned in to peck Star on the cheek.
	"Wait, Marco! Don't--" Marco planted his lips directly on Star's cheek heart. "Mmmmmmahhhmarco..."
	Marco lunged away immediately.  "S-Star, did you just...?!" Star blushed and shot up, almost tripping over her weak legs.
	"NO!" Star sprinted out of the room and slammed the door. Marco stared dumbfounded at the doorframe and at the slightly damp spot on the bed where Star had just been moments before.
	"What the hell just happened?"
	...
	"Did she just..."
	...
	"Oh, that is not fair."
