  4. >You’ve fought a fair share of these strange abilities now, and you wonder if you’re keeping yours.
  5. >The name’s still tingling at the edge of your mind.
  6. >You got this one from your arrow, while he made off with the other.
  7. >So far, you’ve come within spitting distance of three, and learned how unhelpful your power is.
  8. >「Universe Alone」, 「Young Lust」 and 「Selfish Art」...
  9. >If you could match the faces to the powers, this would be so much easier!
  10. >But they’re all familiar.
  11. >Your mind keeps being drawn to old mysticism...
  12. >The Universe, Lust, Art...
  13. >Tarot cards.
  14. >Major Arcana in the Thoth Deck, to be specific.
  15. >Celestia, and here you thought you’d sworn off anything with Thoth in the name for good.
  16. >You stop, check the coast, and fly up into the branches of the trees.
  17. >All of that is only a day on the job, for you.
  18. >But when your own arrow pierced your skin, you didn’t get one fitting the pattern.
  19. >No, it’s... 「Writer」. Something, 「Writer」.
  20. >There aren’t any writers in the Thoth Tarot.
  21. >You can only conclude that each of the arrows has a different effect, even though they don’t seem to have any distinguishing marks.
  22. >If anything, this just makes acquiring both even more important.
  23. >You finally see the truck through the ropey green entanglements.
  24. >And a hint of trademark colors.
  25. >Only someone like Caballeron would need to spend the exorbitant money for a truck.
  26. >Those things run on magically-tempered fossil remains.
  27. >All that lost information, all those subsumed dangers and adventures...
  28. >Well, it sums up Caballeron’s approach to history almost perfectly.
  29. >Not that you’re campaigning to make every sunken temple a museum.
  30. >But you at least understand that history has teeth.
  31. >You keep a safe distance until you’re ready to dance with it.
  32. >Then you do your business and get out of Dodge.
  33. >Caballeron’s a big fan of smacking the dragon right on the snout.
  34. >It’s why you could never work with him, and why he asked you anyway.
  35. >Ugh, the way his eyebrows waggled.
  36. >You flap harder and swerve rightwards for him.
  37. >He’s riding in the back, while two of his henchponies sit in the front, one driving.
  38. >You use your power to check each of their lines of sight in turn.
  39. >It’s almost like snapping stills with a camera.
  40. >You keep yourself in Caballeron’s blind spot, flying lower.
  41. >He doesn’t have the arrow out, so it must be in the crate next to him.
  42. >You won’t be able to get it in a single swoop without a distraction.
  43. >You follow the trail it’s making, extrapolating outwards.
  44. >There’s a very rough-and-tumble road laid out, and it’s sloping upwards.
  45. >You don’t have the altitude to make it out correctly, and you can’t check without losing them.
  46. >But you think this is heading up and eastward.
  47. >Toward Smoking Mountain in the distance.
  48. >Figures it would be the volcano.
  49. >Is there something important about it that only he knows about?
  50. >You only found this place through rumor, but he’s the sort to buy up rare books.
  51. >Well...
  52. >Like always, there’s only one way to find out.
  53. >You keep close to the truck, following it on its path.
  54. >And wait for your opportunity.
  55.  
  56. >Be Marble Pie.
  57. >You’re in your kitchen, standing with your sisters around a map of Equestria laid over the table.
  58. >Maud picks these up on her visits to see Pinkie, and there’s a stack of them pressed into one of the upper shelves of the family closet.
  59. >And next to it, the Choosing Stone.
  60. >It’s rounded on one end and pointy on the other, like an arrowhead, but otherwise smooth speckled grey.
  61. >Like a knife or an arrow, it points toward the answer of whatever you ask it.
  62. >Ma and Pa were the last to use it, and so it’s really responsible for you and your sisters existing in the first place.
  63. >Well, at least as much as destiny.
  64. >Ma pulled it out of hiding - under their pillow - to give to you personally.
  65. >And to tell you how to set it all up.
  66. >Pa… wasn’t able.
  67. >They both knew immediately that the farm wasn’t in a good state.
  68. >You may not have time to save it.
  69. >But even using this as a step in the right direction, neither of them wanted to see you do this.
  70. >”We can only use this with the right tools. A map’s not enough, not for this.”
  71. >Lime mutters as she walks back and forth over it.
  72. >Maud pulls out a giant sheaf of paper from the pack she’s now wearing, and drops it beside the map.
  73. >It reads, in mundane manuscript font, “Daring Do and the Arrow of Ages [WORKING TITLE]“
  74. >Lime’s nervous, but nods at that.
  75. >”Alright. Then I guess it’s time.”
  76. >She draws closer, looking at the Stone like it’s going to turn into a snake.
  77. >Maud holds her back with a hoof, waving her away.
  78. >”I provided the materials. I’ll use it.”
  79. >Limestone sours, growling.
  80. >”You mean you’ll try sacrificing yourself because you’re the oldest.”
  81. >”Yes.”
  82. >Maud gazes at the Stone instead of her sister.
  83. >”If it only works for a pony once, then it should be me.”
  84. >Limestone pulls her muzzle over so they’re making eye contact again.
  85. >”Then how are you going to find your spousal somepony, rockhead?”
  86. >Maud shrugs.
  87. >You’re a little shocked, too.
  88. >The Choosing Stone’s always been used by the family to create and confirm marriages.
  89. >Using it for reconnaisance almost feels dirty.
  90. >A picture of Yearling’s smirk as she trotted away fills your head.
  91. >Dirty tactics for dirty opponents.
  92. >Maud pushes Lime back slightly, and turns back to the Stone.
  93. >She’s apprehensive, too, but she cracks her neck.
  94. >Then she approaches it.
  95. >”No!”
  96. >Lime runs, shooting a small mist of broken glass from her mouth.
  97. >It tinkles against the ground, glittering.
  98. >Maud keeps her front hoof up to avoid bleeding.
  99. >And in that moment of hesitation, Lime dives for the Stone.
  100. >She cradles it to herself, not even looking at it but to your oldest sister.
  101. >”Don’t you ever think you’re going to get away with that self-sacrifice horseshit around me, sis.”
  102. >Then she picks up the Stone with both hooves.
  103. >And drops it.
  104. >Something darker, rounder and smaller falls to the floorboards, skittering to Maud’s hooves.
  105. >Limestone sputters.
  106. >”B-Boulder?! How-”
  107. >In the crook of a hoof, Maud’s holding the Stone.
  108. >”「OK Go」 is fast.”
  109. >Lime points a hoof at her.
  110. >”I didn’t even see you move!”
  111. >”It’s really fast.”
  112. >She approaches the map again, and Lime’s not having it.
  113. >You walk up to it yourself.
  114. >Whoever puts it onto the surface gives up their usage.
  115. >Lime pounces when Maud comes within slamming-down range, lunging for her.
  116. >”「Down With the Sickness」!”
  117. >Maud moves a few hooves out of the way, backwards.
  118. >Another spray of glass narrowly misses her.
  119. >Limestone thumps onto the floor, but rolls with it.
  120. >In seconds, she’s on her hooves, leaping over the glass to hit Maud again.
  121. >Then there’s a great thumping noise, and the room dims as the map begins glowing.
  122. >Both of them stop their tussle and turn to the source of the noise.
  123. >The Choosing Stone, with one of your silverfish on its face, leaving your hoof as it hits the table.
  124. >Your Stand fades, and you take a deep breath.
  125. “ShowmewheretheauthorA.K.Yearlingisrightnow.”
  126. >The Stone accepts your request, which is half the battle already.
  127. >The rest is just pinpointing the location it gives, judging where they’ll be heading in real time...
  128. >It slides of its own will and lands on the northwest desert, just beyond your family’s territory.
  129. >Halfway to a place called Las Pegasus.
  130. >How fitting.
  131. >You try to memorize its current position, extrapolate to the rest of her journey.
  132. >It’s mostly a straight line north, for now.
  133. >You don’t know what lies up there, to be honest.
  134. >Maud and Lime are at the table, and you’re sure they’ll be annoyed with you later.
  135. >For now, they’re making the same considerations.
  136. >And then, just to make things more difficult, the Stone moves.
  137. >It jumps up from where it’s been laid down like someone kneed the table.
  138. >And it spins around to land further up, in Vanhoover.
  139. >It jitters and swings back and forth like a seizing pendulum.
  140. >Vanhoover, desert, Vanhoover, desert...
  141. >Your sisters are looking at you.
  142. >Lime chews on her lip, and concern clouds Maud’s face.
  143.  
  144. >A couple hours later, you’re packed.
  145. >Food and blankets are the important thing, and water.
  146. >Lime’s trying to cover the latter, but you’ve got a good handle on easy foodstuff.
  147. >The few cans in your pantry get thrown in, and some flints-and-steel.
  148. >You look at the map on the table, judging.
  149. >Then you fold it up tiny with your Stand and slip it into your pack.
  150. >Then you turn your eyes to the manuscript.
  151. >It’s lean, probably unfinished.
  152. >There could be valuable information in it, though...
  153. >Is it an act of respect to the enemy to read it?
  154. >Your mouth twists with the weight of the decision.
  155. >Eventually, you look away from it, and 「Opposite of Thieves」 secures it in your pack.
  156. >”Marble?”
  157. >You turn to the bedroom doorway.
  158. “Ma.”
  159. >She comes over and hugs you, squeezing.
  160. >You hug her back.
  161. >This whole farm might be gone by the time you make it back...
  162. >”Your Pa wanted to see you off, but he... hasn’t been feeling well. I sent for a physician, but he will probably refuse the treatment. So, if you have anything to say, it would be best to say it now.”
  163. >Your chest tightens, but you take a deep breath and head for the doorway.
  164. >Inside, you linger, looking into the dim room at the lump in the bed.
  165. “Pa, I-”
  166. >You fumble for words.
  167. “I’m going to get back the brooch, and stop Yearling from whatever she thinks she’s doing. And I’m going to keep my older sisters safe, so we can all come back and prepare for harvest season. We’re going to make sure that nothing happens to this farm, or to each other, or to anybody.”
  168. >You’re talking too much now.
  169. “So, I’ll be back soon, and don’t worry, because I’ll be back soon.”
  170. >Yes, talking too much.
  171. >Pa stirs.
  172. >He looks less imposing and draconic under the covers.
  173. >There’s something foalish about him, now, too sick for his day’s work.
  174. >His eyes aren’t open all the way, slipping between two dreams.
  175. >”Marble Victoria Pie, you be sure you take care of your sisters. Don’t let them think they know best because they’re eldest.”
  176. >He coughs.
  177. >”And keep yourself out of trouble. You hear me?”
  178. >You nod, and he nods back, slowly, eyes closed.
  179. >It’s become almost a rattling motion now, and he drifts back to sleep.
  180. >You turn away, eyes watering.
  181. >Without the brooch’s power, all of this legacy and tradition is crumbling.
  182. >You can’t hold the weight of your own histories any longer.
  183. >You work on not thinking about it, as your Ma returns to the bedside.
  184. >And, discreetly, you put some cans back in the pantry.
  185. >You don’t want to make the next few days any more difficult for Ma.
  186. >After all, even after you retrieve it, you’ve still got to bring it to the farm.
  187. >But that should be the easy part.
  188. >You’ll marathon the distance if you have to, so long as Yearling doesn’t have it.
  189. >Within the hour, you and your sisters set out, both of them making their own goodbyes.
  190. >Lime pays her respects with silence until you’re out of sight of the farm.

  193. >The San Palomino Desert stretches onwards as your hooves trudge through the sand.
  194. >You’re used to the heat, but it still eats at you with time.
  195. >It you weren’t a farmpony, it might’ve devoured you whole before nightfall.
  196. >But you and your sisters are tough as rocks.
  197. >Not to mention good at entertaining yourselves.
  198. >Marble keeps a fascinated eye on any non-sandstone outcroppings or formations.
  199. >Limestone complains.
  200. >And you flip through the manuscript.
  201. >Sometimes pages come loose, and you don’t complain as the wind takes them.
  202. >It’s not a very dense or difficult read.
  203. >Not like the books you’ve read to pass the winter freeze by, those farmbound romances.
  204. >Books of legal protocol, tool repair, genealogy...
  205. >You shudder.
  206. >In essence, Daring Do is the dashing pegasus hero, who steals items to add to a big collection.
  207. >They’re always ancient artifacts no one else can have.
  208. >In this case, a dastardly stallion named Caballeron is after a quiverful of arrows.
  209. >She gets there in time to take one, but he has the other.
  210. >She fights through his magically-powerful but nameless goons, and finds him again.
  211. >Except this time it’s at the top of a mountain, where the prophecy will be fulfilled.
  212. >”When the //two// arrows are brought to the peak of the highest mountain, they will come together, and their wielder will gain mastery over the world.”
  213. >’Two’ is penned in above the print.
  214. >The actual word, ‘three’, is slit by a fancy squiggly line.
  215. >Did she think it wouldn’t fit the story?
  216. >Writer’s decisions are beyond you.
  217. >Suddenly, you walk into Maud’s hoof.
  218. >Ouch.
  219. >You bumped your nose
  220. >She keeps her hoof outstretched to hold you back.
  221. >”Do you see that?”
  222. >You’d ask “See what?”, but Lime does it for you.
  223. >There’s only one thing to see in the dusk-desert right now.
  224. >A single jagged, tree-like formation jutting from the sand.
  225. >And something off-color, even from a distance.
  226. >Maud can see it better than you can, and Lime can’t make it out at all.
  227. >”I’m going to get closer.”
  228. >Maud uses her Stand to bridge the gap automatically.
  229. >Lime charges after her, and you follow in her hoofsteps.
  230. >In the rock, there’s a small ovular depression, with something white sitting in it.
  231. >You realize what it is by the time you arrive.
  232. >It has a pupil, and written above it is the word “DARE”.
  233. >Lime sees it, seizes up and starts shouting.
  234. >”Give us back our brooch, you afterbirthsucking scumfuck bitch!”
  235. >It swivels to look at her, then at Maud, and then at you.
  236. >Maud takes a breath.
  237. >And then slams her hoof into the rock surface, right on top of the eye.
  238. >Her attack is instantaneous, and the whole structure crumbles.
  239. >If not for the sand dampening the thunder, it would have echoed.
  240. >When the dust settles, the eye’s nowhere to be found.
  241. >But you have to assume she was keeping some kind of watch.
  242. >You’re on her trail.
  243. >You feel good and bad about that.
  244. >But as soon as you’ve made sure that the eye hasn’t rolled away somewhere, you press on.
  245.  
  246. >Night falls, and you’re forced to camp out.
  247. >As long as you don’t do it for as long as she did, you’ll still catch her up.
  248. >You’re making good time, you hope.
  249. >Lime digs under the sand for rock while you look at the stars.
  250. >Are they different, if you head to the furthest edges of Equestria?
  251. >Is there something beyond those edges, really?
  252. >Your older sister pulls up grainy rock and chokes it down.
  253. >The whole thing looks eerie from where you’re sitting, so you do your best to ignore it.
  254. >A minute later, she’s pushed a stone knife out of her hoof, and she smashes into the cans.
  255. >It’s a long day’s work, with a long day’s appetite and none of the breaks you’re accustomed to.
  256. >Over a campfire, the three of you eat almost the entire store you’d packed.
  257. >Maud brought the logs from the fireplace’s store, and you light them up.
  258. >The soup itself is fine, but not filling.
  259. >All of its minerals are the tiny unseeable ones.
  260. >Ma always told you, growing ponies need chunks of zinc as big as their heads.
  261. >But health matters aside, your sleep’s restful.
  262. >The next day you set out again.
  263. >And it’s a good trek before you see anything of interest again.
  264. >Unfortunately, it’s not Yearling.
  265.  
  266. >You fumble with the map as Limestone looks from it to the town and back.
  267. >”That’s definitely not Las Pegasus!”
  268. >You glance from it to the map and back.
  269. “I know.”
  270. >The buildings are small, sparse, townish.
  271. >Nothing like the land of casinos and sin your Pa warned you about.
  272. >”Well, where is it, then? Did you take us in the opposite direction?!”
  273. >Maud speaks up.
  274. >”It’s Tall Tale.”
  275. >You consult the map.
  276. >Tall Tale’s on it, north enough to be above Vanhoover.
  277. >...You couldn’t have made it there yet.
  278. >Limestone snatches the map from you, fuming.
  279. >She gets angrier the longer she looks at it.
  280. >You shake your head at the town yourself.
  281. ”I don’t think it is.”
  282. >”Tall Tale is magical. It was built on the grave of Star-Swirl the Bearded. It’s never in the same place on the map twice in a row.”
  283. >Who?
  284. >”Then why didn’t you tell us it might be here? I was about to make us all turn around!”
  285. >”I didn’t know. Who are those ponies?”
  286. “What- oh.”
  287. >In the midday sun, on the outskirts of the town, there are two stallions.
  288. >Yellow coats and pinstripe outfits, like half a barbershop quartet.
  289. >They stare out at you, quietly.
  290. >Waiting.
  291. “Uh… why don’t we go around?”
  292. >Limestone looks at you witheringly.
  293. >”We can’t. Somepony didn’t pack enough food.”
  294. >Ouch.
  295. >You glance back at the… guards?
  296. >The three of you approach them, just as quiet.
  297. >As you draw nearer, you can see that the two are related somehow.
  298. >Maybe twins?
  299. >One has a mustache while the other’s clean-shaven, but their outfits are the same.
  300. >Blue and white stripes, grey bowtie, simple sunhat...
  301. >And both of them are as close to stony as ponies in those getups can be.
  302. >It’s only when you reach the outskirts yourself that they finally speak up.
  303. >”That’s as far as you go.”
  304. >The one with the mustache spoke, and when you look at him you’re finally close enough to see it.
  305. >He’s got her eye.
  306. >He picks up before you can react.
  307. >”We, the Flim Flam brothers, have come to defend our homestead against-”
  308. >”Against what indeed, brother mine! The most dastardly trio of witches this side of the Luna Ocean, I’m sure!”
  309. >”The last pony to pass through our town was afflicted by the three of you!”
  310. >”A creative, too, a bohemian taken down by some curse in her prime!”
  311. >”A curse which has already spread to us, and soon possibly to the whole of our beloved home!”
  312. >”A home that cries out for justice!”
  313. >”Yes, but justice of the right sort!”
  314. >They hardly seem to be talking to you until the mustached one flings a hoof at your sisters.
  315. >”If you three are willing to submit to arrest and the process of the law, then there will be no need for struggle and shame on this day!”
  316. >When they finish, both are posing in sync with each other, looking expectant.
  317. >You don’t know what to say to all of that.
  318. >You’re not certain you followed all of it.
  319. >Limestone speaks for the three of you.
  320. >”Listen up. We’re not trying to hurt you, we’re just passing through so we can tear A. K. Yearling a new one. Don’t get in our way.”
  321. >You can tell by their expressions that this wasn’t what they wanted to hear.
  322. >”If that’s your decision, then by our authority as deputies of Tall Tale-”
  323. >”Licensed and certified by the very Celestial government itself!“
  324. >”-we will take you into custody by force!”
  325. >Limestone seethes as they produce two bulky chrome hand-cannons.
  326. >”I said we DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THIS.”
  327. >She gallops for them, shouting.
  328. >The clean-shaven one fires, and a net bursts from the barrel, opening like a predatory octopus.
  329. >Lime skids to a stop, trying to reverse, and kicks up sand until she falls over.
  330. >But before the net hits her-
  331. >Maud appears between them.
  332. >The net closed around her automatically, wrapping her inescapably in its ropes.
  333. >She falls to the ground from the momentum, and Lime panics.
  334. >She rushes past Maud and straight for the stallion, shouting.
  335. >”I am going TO KILL YOU! 「Down With the Sickness」!”
  336. >”So she finally reveals her curse! 「Aberdeen Rose」!”
  337. >Lime’s eyes go wide.
  338. >The cloud of sand she sprays from her hoof freezes in mid-air before it can touch him.
  339. >Then, after a pregnant pause, it drops to his hooves.
  340. >They have Stands.
  341. >Mustache steps into your field of vision, blocking your view of them.
  342. >He can’t help but twirl it as he stares you down.
  343. >His eyes glint and flash, including hers.
  344. >On instinct, you send out your Stand.
  345. >”「Georgia Devil」: hoof-to-hoof!”
  346. >Then he assumes a pose you’ve only seen one time before.
  347. >On one of the dozen times you’ve really been away from the farm, over in Ponyville.
  348. >In their giant decadent theater with Pinkie, watching a “martial arts movie”.
  349. >A warlock had summoned up a terrible evil by mistake, a screaming faceless monster.
  350. >And to defeat it, he summoned up something even more terrifying, a gangly bipedal thing like an anorexic hairless minotaur.
  351. >Even hoofless, it was a perfect expert in hoof-to-hoof combat.
  352. >You still have no idea how ponies made it look so lifelike.
  353. >But before he engaged it, monster to monster, he took on exactly this stance!
  354. >The terror you feel is heightened by the wisp of something clear that flows off of your skin.
  355. >Like vapor, it rises up and into him, and he crooks his hoof, inviting you closer.
  356. >You back up, and he pounces, nearly cartwheeling to get to you.
  357. >He’s still holding the net-gun, one hoof not even involved in the acrobatics.
  358. >You back up as emphatically as you can.
  359. >Inadvertently, you kick up sand, throwing it in his way.
  360. >He dodges to one side and comes at you again.
  361. >Before you can run away any further back the way you came, he strikes out.
  362. >Your right foreleg goes numb for a moment, and then bursts with stinging.
  363. >You lash out at him yourself, and he blocks it, but he’s pushed back a few feet into town.
  364. >”Ah, a deceptively strong one.”
  365. >”「DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS」!”
  366. >He turns to see Lime, floating in the air towards him, supported by silverfish.
  367. >Just in time for her to glare, shift her cheekbones, and shoot sand from her tear-ducts.
  368. >It hits his face, his eyes, and he covers it for a moment.
  369. >In the distance, you see Maud standing behind the clean-shaven one, hugging him.
  370. >No, holding him in place.
  371. >You look at her curiously, and she calls back to you, embarrassed.
  372. >”His Stand lets him stop things from moving around him. He can’t escape my grip without deactivating it. Now maybe we can be reasona-”
  373. >Mustache calls out over her voice, more boisterously than necessary.
  374. >”I’m coming to rescue you, brother!”
  375. >The sand’s out of his eyes, now.
  376. >”「Georgia Devil」: marksmanship!”
  377. >The vapor comes off of both you and Lime, and he turns to run.
  378. >Before you can react, he turns the gun on each of you.
  379. >The nets hit without him even looking, and then he drops it as he runs.
  380. >You fall to the sand in a tangle, pressed against on all sides, kicking into the air.
  381. >When you can look up, you see Lime’s in the same position, fuming.
  382. >Furiously, she bites into the rope.
  383. >Away from both of you, the brothers reunite.
  384. >”Don’t worry about me, brother, I’ve figured out this one’s powers myself! If we only time ourselves correctly we can knock her out in one go!”
  385. >Maud is statuesque.
  386. >Mustache agrees.
  387. >”「Georgia Devil」: flaw analysis.”
  388. >More vapor - energy? - comes from Maud and into him, and he starts inspecting her.
  389. >He looks almost like a physician, now.
  390. >”Yes, almost certainly. If we strike her in her back hooves, we can do some real damage.”
  391. >”And what she doesn’t know, Flam, is that my 「Aberdeen Rose」 can be reduced to let you make that very same strike.”
  392. >Maud looks nervous.
  393. >”「OK Go」.”
  394. >You don’t blame her for wanting to escape.
  395. >But she doesn’t move.
  396. >Another wisp of vapor, and then Mustache slams a hoof into her back leg.
  397. >She grunts, and more of the vapor escapes her.
  398. >The other brother pulls his Stand in further, and Maud bears a few more attacks.
  399. >Finally she slumps, limply, and her hold breaks.
  400. >They spin and shoot her with a net.
  401. >Only to see Lime outside of her chewed-up net, smashing one of their guns against the road-stone..
  402. >”Not a mare of peace, then?”
  403. >”Not willing to come quietly and confess to your misdeeds!”
  404. >”Making war in the streets and terrorizing the justice of our town! It’s-”
  405. >”absolutely-”
  406. >”-untolerable!”
  407. >They run for her, and she shoots a net at them.
  408. >The shaved one freezes it in place before it hits him, and his brother has to tug it away manually.

  414. >As they recollect themselves, she stares them down.

  416. >And out of her tail emerges a small blade, connected to the same handle as before.
  417. >It’s larger than a knife, but not quite a sword.
  418. >Then she charges for them, blade in her teeth, screaming.
  419. >「Georgia Devil」 runs for her, drawing the vapor from his brother now.
  420. >He leaps as she swings, and kicks the flat of the blade.
  421. >In an instant, it snaps and goes flying.
  422. >Behind you, 「Opposite of Thieves」 finally undoes the clasp on your net.
  423. >Lime takes a few hits before she’s backed up into 「Aberdeen Rose」.
  424. >She tries to turn around or break the hold, but she can’t.
  425. >”「OK Go」.”
  426. >Maud appears on top of Mustache, putting her weight on his back.
  427. >She looks tired and weak now, like something essential’s been taken from her.
  428. >He collapses, frustration bristling in his face, and she makes no further attack.
  429. >You finally wriggle out of your net, and he turns to you.
  430. >You can make out the sheer viciousness in his eyes as they glint at you.
  431. >You stare at them for a moment, and realize it.
  432. >Yes, that’s it!
  433. >You can stop this mess right now, before it gets out of hoof completely!
  434. ”「Opposite of Thieves」!”
  435. >He throws Maud off of him, letting her fall back to the ground like shedding skin.
  436. >And then he stomps towards you.
  437. >You can see the energy leaving you, and feel it too.
  438. >Your Stand is getting weaker.
  439. >But that’s alright.
  440. >You approach him yourself, and speak before he can lash out at you.
  441. “My sisters and I haven’t done anything to you. We’re only peaceful travelers. You’ve both been tricked by the same mare who’s trying to destroy our home!”
  442. >It was all thanks to Lime’s sand...
  443. >He huffs.
  444. >”So you think you can dupe one of the masters, hm? You three are all as tricky as each other!”
  445. >He notices 「Opposite of Thieves」 depositing Lime’s blade at your hooves.
  446. >”Thought you could stall a professional long enough to get a swipe in, too! Well, a true traveler of peace will stand none of that! 「Georgia Devil」!”
  447. >The feeling of weakness is a signal to move.
  448. >There’s no time for words, now, and you’re bad with them anyway.
  449. >So you scoop up the blade with both hooves.
  450. >Before he can strike, you thrust the flat up in front of your face, into the light.
  451. >He stops.
  452. >In the light of his reflection, Yearling’s eye is gone.
  453. >That sand irritated it enough that she had to take it back.
  454. >When you drop the blade, he looks at you quietly.
  455. >Waiting.
  456. “Um.”
  457. >You cough.
  458. >And start telling your story.

  461. >The brothers were certain she was bound for Las Pegasus, but not why.
  462. >After a certain point they just made their excuses and disappeared.
  463. >All of the houses look the same here, but Lime was able to suss out a medical shop.
  464. >She gained enough supplies to heal up Maud, just about good as new.
  465. >The both of you are still helping her walk, though.
  466. >Not because she really needs the help, but because it’s the right thing to do.
  467. >The three of you look out for each other, more than anything.
  468. >However, even the cashier at the drugstore was unfriendly to you.
  469. >This town doesn’t like you or your sisters.
  470. >You can’t rest here.
  471. >All of the doors are shut, the windows curtained, the roads quiet.
  472. >You couldn’t even find Flim or Flam, if you needed to.
  473. >Thankfully, there are only a few more blocks before you get back to your journey.
  474. >Limestone isn’t so appreciative.
  475. >”Well, great. We’re broke, starving, and heading back out into the desert!”
  476. ”There’s a way to fix one of those.”
  477. >She scowls at you.
  478. >”Yeah, how’s that?”
  479. >On one of the houses, the door opens slightly.
  480. >Outside comes a skittering silverfish, attached to a half of a loaf of bread.
  481. >Further down the street, a can comes through a cat-flap.
  482. >A box of crackers presents itself on the stoop next door.
  483. >Limestone stares at you.
  484. “I’m sure they won’t miss it.”
  485. >You smile, sheepish.
  486. >And as quickly as you entered, the three of you get out of Tall Tale.
