  74. Bio:
  75. Tacey grew up in the northern Masallan plains, a child of the wind and open skies, but always dreaming of more. Pragmatic and focused, she did her duty by her parents and by her lord, believing strongly in the Temple of the Dragon and the inner strength and moral character of the nobles up to and including the Emperor of the mighty Troian Empire to which they all owed fealty. When she came of age, she took up service with the Imperial inquisitors, becoming a knight devoted to seeking out dark and shadowy cults and rooting them out through fire and blade. Completing her training with exemplary honours due to her natural talents and skills, she was marked as being particularly capable and taken aside for special duties on the southern frontier, raiding into the Magic Wasteland with a small team of hand-picked elite under one of the best Imperial inquisitors, Sir Bartolmey. Here, her role was to hunt down mages who had fled Imperial justice and crossed the border into the Wasteland, bringing them back to be put to the Question.
  76.
  77. The luster on her new role as an Imperial inquisitor soon began to pall as she began to see the darker side of the Imperial court. Her role to hunt down potential magical threats to the crown seemed to largely be relegated to hunting unlicensed mages, who, rather than being the vile knaves and treacherous snakes she had believed them to be, largely consisted of people who couldn't afford the Imperial licenses and who were just trying to get by in a hostile land after being driven from their homes by hatred and the fear of the Inquisition. The people here in the Empire proper, she saw, reacted not with pride in her badge of office, but a fear spurred by a dread that matched that which they held for the monsters that frequently crossed the porous borders. Nonetheless, she persevered in her duties to the Emperor, who she trusted from afar, and distinguished herself. With the recommendation of her superior, she was eventually transferred back to the capital of Dia, where she was to aid the Imperial Guard in the defense of the new Emperor and his court.
  78.
  79. Here, she finally found the vile knaves and treacherous snakes she had sworn to fight, and to her dismay, she found she could not face them on the field of battle. Her strong sword hand and her indomitable shield were worthless against the barbed words and insidious plots of the Imperial court, and though she still hunted mages, it was now at the behest of a dissolute and debauched lord who cared nothing of his people, save as toys for his twisted whims. Emperor Troy VII she saw only at a distance, but that was all she desired. Seeing the truth that lay at the heart of the Empire had shaken the foundation of her belief to the core, and though she still persisted in her duties, it was only a hollow shell of what she had once held, performed only for the sake of the role she was expected to play.
  80.
  81. In 216, the Birthday Massacre finally shattered even that. The crowds broke and shattered as the Emperor ordered their deaths for the sake of his own amusement, and she was among the soldiers ordered out in the wake of the Massacre for crowd control; in spite of her position as an Inquisitor, every body was needed to maintain order in the unrest the Massacre had engendered. Cavalry was poorly-suited for peaceful mob control in the twisting warrens of the slums of Dia, and her commanding officer, a noble of the Imperial Guard promoted for no other qualifications than nepotism, was an idiot with no experience in defusing the situation, chose to charge into the slums without support. Under the pressure of the Imperial authorities, the mobs finally fought back, with her own regiment in the middle. Her regiment was surrounded, her commanding officer and her fellow soldiers pulled from their horses. Her own horse was cut down from under her, but badly wounded, she somehow managed to escape the crowd. She shed her armor, her shield, every sign of who she was, becoming nothing more than the girl from Masalla. The Inquisitor, once proud in the service of the Empire, once so noble in spite of her frontier upbringing, had died with the rest of the regiment.
  82.
  83. On that day in Dia, she fled her honour, she fled her oath, and she fled her old life. Having taken a severe injury when her horse came down on her leg, her gait was unsteady, and her lack of height caused many to underestimate her, to their ultimate detriment. Taking up odd jobs and work as a mercenary or hostler, where her talents with horses helped her well, she gradually made her way across the continent to first Stavenwalt, then across the sea to the Free Port Setine. Here, in lands so far distant from Dia that the suzerainty of the Emperor was honoured as much in the breach, she made her way for the last seven years as a mercenary and sell-sword, with only her horse and her sword.
