  213. you can get on/off trains when they are going slow like when they are going through town or
  214. going/coming from a stop. you can hop them when they are stopped vary easily, just watch for bulls
  215. (yard workers/guys that don't want you on their train) then just wait for them to start moving.
  216. getting off is best when going slow too. don't just tuck and roll if you don't have to, if it's going slow
  217. enough, try lowering yourself down on the ladder (there will be ladders by the way, thats the shit you
  218. grab on to) and running with it then letting go and slowing down. make sure you keep your footing. if
  219. you're going hella fast (but not like HELLA fest) then totally tuck and roll. it may hurt a little, but it's not
  220. that bad usually
  221. gun can never hurt, just don't get caught with it on you. i carry a Springfield m6 scout on all my hops
  222. security is hardly an issue at all. they hardly check and you can see them coming a miles away
  223. i hop trains and ride them into some real deep wilderness some times and if you hop of where they
  224. usually go slow, you'll most likely be able to hop one to take you back
  225. do be careful if you do try this. hop slow trains and don't go so far as so you can't walk back if need be
  226. for your first few hops. if a train starts going a little to fast for your liking, get off immediately cause
  227. once they get going they stay that way for a minute. you might end up getting stuck on one going 60

  422. Anyway, it was one of them coal trains, long as fuck. I was walking nearish this smaller station that

  856. >A quick google search can get you all the info
  857. This. Absolutely this. Experienced riders will be able to ask a worker where a train is going, but
  858. that's not for amateurs - you definitely need to feel people out. Some hate riders, some don't
  859. care, depends on the yard. But one thing most people do at a new yard is scope google maps,
  860. find out what are likely departure tracks and what places are going to be a waste of time to hang
  861. out in. Then you're likely to get better information if you see a worker because you're asking a
  862. guy who builds outbound trains instead of a guy who is doing MOW or a million other things that
  863. let him not give a flying fuck about what's going where. And there are a lot of those guys around a
  864. railyard.
  865. But really, anyone serious nowadays, even the old guys, just carry a radio scanner. You'll often hear
  866. something like "RTC this is CN 112 eastbound on track seven, permission to clear," and the
  867. controllers says "ok CN 112 you are clear, have a nice trip," and since you googled the train numbers
  868. and you know that train originates in Vancouver and terminates in Toronto, you look for what's moving
  869. or you find track seven and you're on your way. Plus when workers see you and feel dickish about it
  870. they'll radio the bull and you'll hear that and know when to hide, a trick that has saved my ass a
  871. number of times. Nothing like a constant stream of information when you're trying to get away with
  872. stuff.

1095. Thank you all for your participation, and those helping answer questions.
1096. I appreciate you all, and almost got to do this, but lost a friend to this.
1097. Let me start off by expanding on the dangers- my friend was killed due to a train
1098. hopping incident. His foot was cut off after a train hit something on a track while
1099. he was jumping on it.

1106. I do still dream of doing this, but it has been off my scheduale for quite some time while considering

1126. trains also run during the night, when it's pretty cold and the visibility is bad.

1134. I have also met a conductor I should mention, a few things about them.
1135. Most of them are indeed family men and lonely on the road.
1136. There is a common crack cocaine problem with them- I met him after he got clean, he himself became

1138. The reason for the cocaine is obvious- the long rides.

1721. Train hopping may sound cool as fuck, but seriously, don't do it. It's fucking
  1722. dangerous.
1723. I have at least 3 friends who have fucked up their lives doing this, one getting
1724. busted, one getting stuck inside this old train storage compound facility, and one
1725. jumping off at 15 mph and breaking his leg and fracturing his neck.
1726. It may seem cool as fuck until you realize you're a retard hanging onto a moving piece of speeding
1727. steel in the middle of fucking nowhere.
1728. Not to mention nowadays trains are so few and far between they are only used by military / high
1729. security organizations that do not tolerate your bullshit.
1730. If you are caught on one you will be busted.

2073. Im planning to travel around the country after school. My first question is how do you find the yards? I
2074. have looked at a map of my city and have found a few but i don't think they are freight, more likely
2075. they are just public transit. Also what do you guys bring? My guess is water would be the most
2076. important thing as well as ear plugs. Do tou try and travel lightweight or is it ok to have alot of gear?
2077. Also i am in Philadelphia any storys, tips, etc for the region?

  3043.
3044. Doubt there is a hotshot from Vancouver to New York. Most/all trains heading east will be switched or humped before reaching their final destination unless it is intermodal, but I would be very surprised if there is intermodal traffic between Vancouver and New York. Also, keep in mind that regulations mandate that trains. All trains have to change their crew after traveling a certain distance, or a maximum of 12 hours.

3180. As someone whose ridden freight with and without a scanner, let me clear up some misconceptions you guys seem to have.
  3181.
3182. Radios are NOT the be all end all for rail safety. Most deaths by rail come from accidents, and they don't announce accidents via radio, obviously. The only thing a scanner is really handy for is finding out what train is being built, and getting a heads up if you're spotted. The downsides are they cost a shitload of money, they take a ton of batteries, they aren't dustproof/waterproof (I'm sure the more expensive ones are, though) and they take up a surprisingly large amount of room in your pack (obviously depending on what you get)
  3183.
3184. That being said, thousands of people ride freights without fancy scanners no problem, and no "disaster" will ever come from not having one.

3190. >Not to mention all the /k/ommandos that think it's impossible to get a concealed weapons charge with a rifle
3191. Well, it kind of is. Transporting a weapon is not the same as concealing it.
  3192.
3193. So if your rifle is sheathed or in your pack you will not be breaking concealed weapon laws
  3194.
3195. Some states like AZ issue permits for concealed weapons, meaning you can carry sawn off shotgun if you want. (Assuming proper AWO)
  3196.
3197. Other states only issue permits for pistols.

I find this hard to believe, when a knife concealed in your pack can fetch a concealed weapons charge... not to mention the fact that the cop will probably just write the ticket anyways, regardless of whether or not it will hold up in court, and probably set the date waaaay far in advance so you've either got to hang around whatever tiny city you got stopped in for a few months, or try to make it back in time.

One person uploaded a super shitty, semi illegible, incomplete copy a while back, and needless to say, nobody has since then.

3424. Depends. Train riders usually hang out in pretty much the same parts of towns, and depending on the size of the town and the frequency of the line that runs through, you may see a bunch. I got off in Green River Wyoming (a crewchange point on the busiest stretch of rail in the nation) and there happened to be 12 other riders in town. They weren't all travelling together, mostly groups of 3 or 4, but we all ended up in the same town. Another time, me and the 4 other kids from my home town who travel this way, all happened to end up in Boulder at the same time, none of us had coordinated with eachother.

3444. Its generally a good idea to ride only empty cars.if there is something inside you can get hurt. I did read about a guy who took his chances with a full container and it ended up being full of new cars. He had a rather comfy ride. What you really have to worry about safety wise is making sure the car doors don't shut on you because you wont be able to open them again. Jam it with something.

3495. The cars you're thinking of are Intermodal cars. The containers don't shift. Your problem with those, is the floors. Some have giant holes in the floors, don't ride these. Boxcars are safe IF both the doors are open AND you deadman BOTH the doors (jam a railroad spike in the doorjamb) but boxcars are becoming increasingly rare, especially open ones.
3496. Grainers/hoppers are a LOT more common, but again, look at the floor. If it has big holes, don't ride.

3534. None of those things you listed are that essential. The biggest thing to remember is that trains are fucking windy, and steel drains you of heat. So, you need something to insulate you from the steel (camping pad is best, but cardboard or carpet works too) and you need something to keep the wind off of you. Also, always ride on the back of a car, so you won't get shittons of wind comin at ya.
  3535.
3536. Your position on the actual train itself isn't THAT important, but you obviously don't want to be near the very front (those units have rear view mirrors...) and riding on the very last car (unless its a DPU) will drive you fucking insane because the FRED sounds like a dentist drill.

3568. that whole "rail workers beating you up" is a myth. May have been a reality back in the day, but it isn't now. Not to mention most of the actual engineers think it's "good luck" to have a bum on their train, supposedly it means the train won't derail. Just some old timey myth, obviously. But all the engineers I've met have been super nice. Plus it depends a lot on the company, but you don't have to worry about security people beating your ass. This is fucking 2013 after all.
  3569.
3570. I usually don't bother with running, because A)I have a fucking pack on, B) if you run, they suspect you of doing something worse then just riding freight, and C) if you're nice and upfront, sometimes workers will help you out and let you know when your train is leaving, or where a particular train is going. Hell, I had a KCS engineer bring lunch to us while we waited on a gondola.
