  1. Since a lot of people have been asking about this; I decided to spend 30 minutes to make a definitive message explaining everything.
  2.
  3. ```Apparently, my username is reserved. What does that mean?```
  4.
  5. After numerous testing, the (MURT) Multiple User Reservation Theory makes the most sense as to what it means and is the most popular belief.
  6.
  7. ```So how does the (MURT) work?```
  8.
  9. **Multiple Users** will be reserved the tag name that they had before the cutoff (March 1st). Which means, nobody else with a different tag name than you before the cutoff will be able to grab your **reserved** username except their own.
  10.
  11. ```Wait if **Multiple Users** will have the same reserved names, then how will they get their name if only one person can have it?```
  12.
  13. **It is "first come, first served" for the user(s) with their reserved name to claim it.**
  14. There isn't any additionally priority or ranking system based off how long you had the tag name or even tag number (Ex. #0001)
  15. Which essentially means that if a 2016 (January) account called "Bob#0001" received the username update but was off Discord at the time watching a movie; then a different 2016 (February) account, "Bob#3894" could grab the username "Bob" instead of the Bob#0001 who was too late.
  16.
  17. This is good for preventing people with one name from suddenly grabbing some other user's name that they had for a while; but it sucks for those who had a common name (like Bob) that's already claimed and now has to pick through a system that has a bunch of pre-reserved names.
  18.
  19. Everything above has pretty much been **confirmed by users with testing**.
  20.
  21. ```Is there any part of theory that is uncertain?```
  22.
  23. Everything above has pretty much been **confirmed by users with testing**.
  24.
  25. This isn't part of theory but is probably but we do have to say that it is not true that **every single user on Discord receives a reserved username**. We found out that a very small number of users don't get their name reserved. Upon that, we uncovered that these accounts without a reserved name all seem to be inactive accounts. That's all we know for now and are still looking for more information on why. If you found anymore information on this, please contact me.
  26.
  27. That's all we know for now on that, but for the most part you will receive your reserved username and the theory above applies.
  28.
  29. ```Any other miscellaneous theories about the update confirmed by user testing?```
  30.
  31. - If only a **single user** has a username reserved for them and they do not take it; then that reserved name becomes available for everyone to grab. But if it's been reserved for others, then it's still reserved.
  32. > Example: There's a user called "OnePieceisBestAnime2923#0001" and they receive the username update. Then "OnePieceisBestAnime2923" cannot be taken by anyone. However, if the user decides to change their name to something else instead like "OnePiece_" then as a result, "OnePieceisBestAnime2923" becomes open for anyone else to take.
  33.
  34. - It seems that Discord has a system that prevents other users from taking a username that has been recently changed. When a user changes their username , there is a 24-hour period in which no one else can claim that username **except the person who changed into the name**. So it essentially turns into a temporary reservation for that user. After the 24-hour period is over, the username **if not reserved** becomes available to other users.**If it is reserved**, it will become available to those it's reserved to after the 24 hour period.
  35.
  36. ```Some Examples of MURT (There's a lot so I'm only including some I came across personally: ```
  37.
  38. (Partner gets name reserved but doesn't grab their username, another user with the same reserved name grabs it first later on)
  39.
  40. (User with the tag "zoro." was the only one who could claim "zoro.")
