  8.
  9. Trichocereus
  10.
  11. Large genus of some 50–80+ species native to Ecuador, Peru,
  12. Bolivia, Argentina and Chile. Recently merged with the closely related
  13. genus _Echinopsis_, leading to great confusion. Here we recognize
  14. _Trichocereus_ as a distinct genus, variable in size and form;
  15. sometimes low growing multi-branching colonies, others large
  16. candelabra-like stands to imposing tree-like giants. All produce large
  17. funnel shaped flowers that are often sweetly scented. These
  18. magnificent flowers are either white and nocturnal or multi-colored
  19. and diurnal. The fruits are edible and quite delicious. Cuttings are
  20. often planted as living fences throughout South America. Flower petals
  21. and the inner flesh of most species are excellent external remedies
  22. for wounds and burns much like _Aloe vera_. Cut stems of some species
  23. are traditionally used to "purify" water. All are relatively fast
  24. growing, easy from seed and fairly cold tolerant. Increasingly popular
  25. as hardy landscape specimens. For optimal growth provide a rich
  26. well-drained soil, plenty of horizontal root room, bright light and
  27. regular water and nutrients during Spring and Summer. _Trichocereus_
  28. provide some of the best long lived grafting stocks. We are now
  29. involved in a long term interdisciplenary field study of the
  30. ethnobotany, distribution and taxonomy of these cacti. See the Andean
  31. Collections section for our wild seed accessions. Subscribe to our
  32. Rare Plant List ($5 for 4 issues) for additional offerings of
  33. specimens, rarities, and new hybrids..
  34. Note on cuttings – We send rooted cuttings whenever available,
  35. otherwise cuttings are unrooted. Plants over 6" can not be sent
  36. potted. We often have larger size cuttings than those listed, please
  37. inquire. *_Plants marked with an asterisk are large, heavy and have
  38. special shipping charges. We will bill you whatever the actual
  39. shipping costs for these plants + an additional $5 packaging and
  40. handling fee on the total order.._
