until age 13/14 he was raised in lost lake with his, frankly, psychotic family. his parents raised him to murder his oldest brother when he showed signs of disloyalty to the new order. he and his brother are both indoctrinated with the teachings of the order. they are expected to lead people back to the town to be terrorized, tortured and eventually murdered. obviously someone should have called social services on his parents.

after moving in with his adopted family, the change influenced his personality. some of the brainwashing started to flake away and reveal the person he might have been if he hadn't been raised to be a total freak. he is actually a caring and inquisitive person. he doesn't like to see people hurt, and the longer he remains away from lost lake and his parents' conditioning, the more resistant to the idea of hurting people he gets.

still, his upbringing has caused irreperable damage that leads him to uncontrolable fits of violence when/if he's "triggered," or if basically something sets him off - the possible ways to trip such a response are too layered in years of brainwashing and abuse to define in exact terms, but common themes include family, (some more triggers/themes).

he keeps most of his emerging doubts/fears to himself because he's scared of what his brother/family will do if they find out, if they will think he is disloyal like holden.

because of his isolated upbringing, he's not very approachable and can be kind of terminally awkward around normal kids. he tries to blend in as is expected of him by his parents, but has a hard time reading what he is supposed to do in certain situations, and can sometimes say completely the wrong thing or just maintain weird, awkward silence in lieu of fucking up.
