1. For those of you who have never seen or played CTF before, please consider looking at World Doom League 2016 in ZDoom or another doom-in-hexen compatible port. Here is also a video of a CTF match casted.

3. Things to note:
4.
5. * You want hallways with textures that are distinct so people know where they are at all times. Spawning and not knowing where you are at isn't fun.
6. * The right balance of health, armor, and ammo is a real thing. Too much health means the flag carrier will have it easy if they make it back to base. Too much armor means it takes forever for people to die. Nobody wants to run out of ammo unless its a gimmick weapon like the BFG. That being said do not use too many potions and armor bonuses... I mean I can't have brown flash over my screen all the time! Also don't forget that people watch the timer like a hawk in maps that have mega powerups like soulspheres, blue armor, and megaspheres. Probably no more than one mega powerup per map.
7. * Make sure people don't get stuck on detail and that there are no cheap gimmicks. The map pissing people off is the #1 reason that when it is next in rotation people will "vote nextmap" past it.
8. * Hearing matters A LOT in CTF and you have to consider it. Do people know exactly where you are when you jump from a ledge in the enemy's base and others hear "oomph?" Does the switch you press alert everybody in the map? Most likely.
9. * In my time, most great maps take no longer than 10 seconds to run from one flag to the other with SR50. If more, your map is probably too big.
10. * Slime either hurts or it doesn't. Don't be inconsistent.
11. * Pretty much every busy room (most importantly the middle!) has to have more than one path in and out so there are no bottlenecks.
12. * Where do you see someone defending the flag? Where do you see someone guarding the middle? How fast do you see someone getting to the flag from spawn?
