- Hello! I registered just to help out Kezune with the Nova genome. Actually, this advice can help anyone looking for a genome file, when all they have are .exp's or eggs.
- Credit where credit is due, I learnt all of this from The Shee's Lost Knowledge article on reverse-engineering the C1 .exp file format. http://sheeslostknowledge.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/reversing-c1-exp-file-format-part-1.html
- Although it's about C1, I successfully applied this knowledge in order to extract the JayD Canny genome from his pack of .exp wolfing norns.
- First, I highly recommend using Notepad++, as you will need to compare multiple files side-by-side.
- 1. Using Notepad++, open up the .exp or .egg file that you want to extract its genome from.
- -- Before you proceed, click the 'Encoding' menu and make sure you're viewing ANSI.
- 2. Press Ctrl+F and Find the following string: "dna2gene" (without the quotation marks)
- -- If you don't find "dna2gene", search instead for "CGenomeŒ"
- 3. Put your cursor at the beginning of that word, and then highlight all previous content, until you reach the beginning of the file, and then delete. Your file should now begin with either "dna2gene" or "CGenomeŒ".
- 4. Ctrl+F again to find the word "gend".
- 5. Put your cursor at the end of that word, and then highlight all the content that comes after it, until you reach the end of the file, and then delete. The very last thing written in your file should now be "gend".
- 6. Now, if your file starts with "dna2gene", you're done! Save this file with a .gen extention (don't overwrite your original .egg or .exp!) and you should be able to open it up in the Genetics Kit. Test this to make sure you did everything correctly.
- -- If your file was one of the unlucky ones starting with "CGenomeŒ", there's one more step you need to follow to get it working.
- 7. Take a look at the following screenshot. Your file should look somewhat similar to this:

- But the aim is to change that first bit to look like this instead:

- It looks pretty complicated, but don't worry! Just do this:
- 1. Change the word "CGenomeŒ" to "dna2gene"
- 2. Delete these two sequences:

- And that's it! Save the file as a new .gen (again, don't overwrite your original file) and open it up in Genetics Kit to make sure it worked.
- Hope this was useful. :)
